Hello everyone, just seen this advertised on YouTube and my first thought was "This is the new Necromunda isn't it?". So I thought I'd come over to the hub of Necromunda and see what people were saying.
It seems like this
is the new Necromunda from everything I've read here and from hopping about online.
So if I may, I'll just put a few thoughts down.
It seems to be that this is a safe option release, as in they're making it 100% compatible with the existing 40k ranges for maximum reach. It also seems from the name "Shadow War: Armageddon" that they
know it might ruffle a few hardcore Necromunda feathers so they set it in another hive city precisely to make the point that this isn't the same spire. I'll come back to that in a bit though.
I'm not sure which set of rules they're referring to with phrases like "It's the old Necromunda ruleset to play with.". The pictures show some snazzy red templates but they're current 40k 3rd-now templates, so do they mean the rules are the Original 1995 ones, the later Underhive edition or the Living Rulebook ones? I'm guessing the latter, as its their latest set. It would make transition to the NCE easier for new players, though that'd be a bonus for YakTribe rather than their intention!
I suspect that this is a Forgeworld release. They just won't make a 95% identical game again under a different brand name, that would be bizarre. No, I suspect that actually what we have here is much like The Horus Heresy games and Blood Bowl; plastic retail sets with wide appeal in GW shops (and elsewhere) but with Forgeworld support in regards to extra bits.
Much like this:
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Ultramarines-Task-Force where you get Betrayal at Calth plus a load of FW resin upgrade bits or
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Blood-Bowl-and-Morg-N-Thorg for Blood Bowl, what I suspect will happen is after the April release of this game what we will see is Forgeworld making a
Shadow War: Necromunda Gangs add-on for the game, where you get some rules specifically for the old gangs in their own spire (rather than 40k armies in the new one) and then they will periodically release new versions of the old gangs, either in plastic or resin. Then you will see such bundles as I linked to above where you can buy Shadow War: Armageddon+Shadow War: Necromunda Gangs+1 of 6 gangs of your choice, for a bundle price. The name kinda even makes sense that way given the multiple new Warhammer Quests.
That's how I think this is going to work. Maybe they'll make some extra resin scenery bits but I reckon this game is the base game and Necromunda, the hive and gangs, will be Forgeworld only.
I have to say, I am quite excited about seeing this though, the scenery looks nice even if it isn't what we were expecting but it does look like it's supposed to be 100% compatible with existing scenery ranges, like the Promethium pipelines. This new game gives me vibes of Inquisimunda actually, just I imagine without the complexity.
Overall
I might be wrong but I'm just going on past behaviour from FW and GW on my hunch here. All the gangs were very specific to the Necromunda game so possibly no use to the people who like to nick the miniatures for 40k, so I reckon GW/FW have played it safe here for easy sales and are attempting to attract a new crowd while also appeasing the old guard in their specialist division.
Sorry for the looooong reply, its been a while since I posted last!
