Shadow War: Armageddon General Discussion

So one cache gets you one specialist for one game? I guess there is no way to keep them around other than to spend another cache in the next post-game sequence?

You don't even hire them after each game, you choose to bring one at the beginning of a game (before you know what the mission is though).

It doesn't seem like it would be any problem for one of the six House Gangs to play normally in SWA. It feels like the gangs could play pretty normally. They would work their territory, buy weapons on the open market, and roll scenarios like anyone else.

When the gangs win Promethean caches they are treated like Isotopic Fuel Rods. They can be sold on the open market for half of 50+4D6 which is 25 creds in Gangland open market.

The fluff behind this is kind of simple. People who live in the underhive put these promethean caches their in the first place. They are the keys to providing power to underhive settlements. What these armies are doing is raiding the vital resources of the region and terrorizing the town folk. The gangs are rising up in rebellion against this terror that is striking their region.

The Orks are using the Fuel Rods to power their war machine and build fortresses in the underhive. Because let's face it, a fuel rod can power a settlement territory, vehicle, or manufacturing facility.
The Space Marines who understand hive warfare and are using Scouts to do a scorched earth policy. Hopefully denying the Orks a foothold in the Underhive. And of course, also terrorizing the town folks.

Any gang that loses a scenario with a SPECIAL 3 to 1 casualties equals territory loss rule; will lose a settlement territory if they have one or their most valuable territory. A settlement or territory gets sacked for its fuel rods.

? WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE FREE RODS FOR A HOUSE GANG!? Well... start making a settlements and arming juves. When armies start moving into the underhive everyone's caches of rods are up for grabs. Stealing the rod caches out of the underhive shuts parts of it down or makes them unnavigable. The gangs are trying to defend their territory by also scorching earth around them and denying resource to their foes.

This may be the single biggest transition from normal gang warfare to urban guerrilla warfare. The rods are a new currency.

So can someone explain to me how the specialists work?

Do you start with them or upgrade to them?

None of them seem to have points in the free PDFs on GW's website.

just reading this now actually

It's really good seeing so many videos of people playing this popping up, and some honest reviews about how the game is a lot of fun (cos the rule set it's based on is awesome), but a lot of comments about how the campaign isn't as deep as Necromunda.
Hopefully people will play this game and enjoy it, but then remember how it's been compared to a Necromunda and come have a look at how the campaigns change! Cos once they get into the Underhive of Hive Primus I reckon they'll be hooked haha!
As an aside, I wonder how site traffic will do after everyone has their hands on this game? Or if there's been a noticeable bump since the game was announced? Anything interesting been happening @Malo?

None of them seem to have points in the free PDFs on GW's website.

Kill Teams may have "Specialists", not to be confused with "Special Operatives" when creating their lists. A Specialist can be armed with Heavy and Special Weapons. For example a Scout Gunner is a "Specialist" in a Space Marine Scout Kill Team that can have access to heavy weapons such as a heavy bolter.

A Terminator is a "Special Operative" which can be obtained before a mission is selected. The Kill Team must forfeit 1 Promethium Cache for a Special Operative to fight along side them in the next mission. After the mission, the operative leaves. A player may take more than one special operative, and may take more than one of the same kind of special operative.

Each operative is considered to be part of their kill team but does not count towards the maximum size of the kill team and shares the kill team's special rules. They are also included when working out how many fighters must be down or out of action for a bottle test.

When you hire Special Operatives, they begin with their initial wargear; however, you are given options to exchange their gear for other weapon combinations before the mission starts. For example, before a game I hire a Terminator. The Terminator is equipped with a power sword, storm bolter and terminator armor. I can do one of the following:

Exchange his power sword for a power fist.
Exchange his power sword and storm bolter for a pair of lightning claws or for a thunder hammer and storm shield.

Really good news:

Another sign that they really are starting to listen to the community and take feedback onboard.

I am one of those who really appreciates a physical copy of rules so this is right up my street and having all factions p!us a bonus pair makes this a complete product for me. Only question is if this is going to a limited print run and somewhat collectable, how many copies should I get.

I'm a bit meh on the terrain now I've seen it a bit closer, it's got skull disease - all very detailed but seems rather expensive for what you get.....

Transmission ends, tv screen blinks on to show a small ginger Troll being dragged off by the GW inquisition shouting heresy "build it from PVC pipe, my tribe, PVC pipe!!"

Kinda meh on the way this whole "release" went down. Feels very manipulative to the customer base.
Then there is the 105 quid for the terrain vs 80 for the whole box set... no thanks. I'll stop there as the bitterness is growing strong in this one.

Besides the skull disease, its got the tube disease. While tubes are the most materials cost efficient way to enclose a volume (lowest cost for GW), they are the worst possible shape for determining cover. No way to hide "behind" or get cover from a large tube and still shoot. A couple of them on the table are fine, but I tend to specifically NOT build them because of the problems determining cover with them.

Not so sure how useful the 6" * high platforms and walkways will be for Necro. Unless you are within an inch of the ladder base, its going to take two turns to get up a ladder. Going to want "ladder" bases** to hold figs that are partway up ladders at the end of their turn. Something that hooks into the ladder and has a base large enough for the fig to stand on. Half of the stanchions also do appear to potentially support intermediate height walkways, except for the two with the fan and speaker that would be blocking the walkway.

*Would be nice if someone who has the box could measure the height of these...

**Possible opportunity for Tak's lasercut projects.

I could make GW a lot of money if they just asked - how?

By making one of those sprues with just the new ladders and other such detailing bits they've already designed from the imperial cities sprues.

Hell make GW branded foamboard and get partnerships with Pringles and Applicance Online to supply GW branded packaging for all I care....

I'm with @Space Truckin here. I'm glad I didn't bother going down to GW on release day because, from what I heard, they sold out of what they had in 5 minutes. I don't mind things being limited/while stocks last in principle, so long as there are reasonable stocks.

With other recent releases, like Calth, people knew they wouldn't be around that long, but anyone who wanted it could get it. And it's still possible to order the limited edition Hobbit box now. Making a new game that you can't buy on day of release is just stupid.

There's actually interest in my local community, which is nice as I never see Necromunda etc round here, but I'm tmepted to boycott this on principle in favour of games that I can buy (or don't even need to buy). Perhaps I'd give it a second chance if the rules were sufficiently cheap, but that probably means about £10 for me and knowing GW I wouldn't be surprised if they were three times that.

I get what you mean. The limited but-we-won't-tell-you situation was annoying. The lack of response from GW over requests to reprint were disheartening. The suggestion it would take weeks to push out a PDF, frankly, insulting.

But the biggest bugbear. Well, that would be the constant pushpushpush of saying the new scenery will be out soon and buy now, buy three copies each!!. Urgh. It often makes you wonder if they deliberately stoked up interest just to hike out these new scenery sets.

Now a lucky friend of mine snagged the rare weighty box so I've had a good look at the scenery. It's nice, fairly sturdy thick plastic... but! I think the box set price was probably fair for what you get, when you add in all the other stuff. the scenery itself isn't that expansive, already my friend was talking about getting a few more kits to make it fill out a 4'x4' gaming table. Really could do with another SW:A box to fill everything out a bit.

The individual scenery sets though... ahhh, no, no thanks. Its £80 for the boxed set but well over £100 for just three out of five sets they're offering. Two of which are just the other sets minus walkways. That's really expensive. That shouldn't come as a huge surprise but what is really galling is that they have the rules already, they're already making the troops, templates and scenery and dice they must have a supplier for the other boxed games. So what's the problem? They can't get someone to print a box?

The news that they're releasing a printed rulebook is great, especially for those who never had a printed Necromunda copy, but I wonder what it will be priced at? Buying SW:A individualy, part by part will be hugely expensive, even if you skip the troops. It'll be another round of groaning if the Sisters and Inquisition are exclusive to the new printed rulebook or (no doubt paid) digital download though.

I got mine from The Outpost. They were £24, £24, and £36 respectively being 20% off so,that made them reasonable. But I agree at full price, they are overpriced.
