Shenanigans in the north of Scotland

And that's it for basing tonight; the Boys from Blaster Bay, bases done.

Hive-worlds are heaving with gangs, there's no escaping it. A gang-free hive-world is like a heresy-free xenos, it's a nice idea but in reality it's just not going to happen. Jamming that many humans into that little space has its inevitable results; every hive-world in the galaxy has gangs, even Holy Terra, and Mechanicus forge-worlds are just a particular kind of heavily industrialised hive-world.

In true Mechanicus fashion, the Admech treat forge-world gangs as just another resource, to be utilised wherever proves applicable. The variant of the Imperial faith followed by the civilian populations of forge-worlds such as Ryza fails to differentiate between a tech-adept and an Eclessiarchial priest: to the mind of your typical Mechanicus menial or forge-world ganger, instructions from a high-ranking member of the Mechanicus might as well come from the Emperor Himself, and will typically be obeyed with the sort of fanaticism more normally seen being whipped up by an Imperial Confessor.

From the gangs the Admech recruit both menial labourers and more advanced personnel; numerous tech-adepts began their careers in the underhives of forge-worlds, as do the vast bulk of the Skitarii and significant numbers of servitors. From time to time, a tech-adept will for whatever reason recruit forge-world gangers as-is – normally because the tech-adept in question is having trouble recruiting anyone else, sometimes because the tech-adept considers the ganger a usable asset just the way they are, and sometimes a bit of both.

In the case of the Ryzan gang called the Twisted Nex, their recruitment into the service of Magos Viktor von Frankenstern came at a low ebb for the gang. A run of bad luck, getting the worse end of events in a string of confrontations with their long-term enemies the Southside Kill Krew, an idiot who should never have been allowed frag grenades, and a drunken argument got way, way out of hand had left only two of them alive – heavy Little Kane and juve Mitzi McKade – and with hits out on them from the Southside Kill Krew they weren't likely to find places in other gangs either.

Their fortunes did an abrupt 180 when von Frankenstern, hotly pursued by the Southside Kill Krew and a rampaging Praetorian servitor, came crashing through the door of the watering hole in which the two were trying to decide what in the Emperor's name they were going to do to keep body and soul together.

Two absurdly violent hours later as they and he escaped the area aboard a groundwheeler that used to be the Southside Kill Krew's leader's second most prized possession (being driven by someone who had up until a few minutes ago been the Southside Kill Krew's leader's most prized possession) when von F offered them positions in his retinue their answers were all but a foregone conclusion.

Like a lot of forge-world gangs, the Twisted Nex members have considered themselves Mechanicus personnel since early childhood, and use gang symbols and colours clearly derived from Mechanicus iconography such as the crude variant of the Machina Opus seen here; this symbol is repeated on the backs of the gangers' leather jackets.

And, an overview of the three and the car.

This miniature's neck bolt is not my work. It was done by a friend from Elgin after we realised how very much like the Boris Karloff rendition of Frankenstein's monster my attempt to resculpt his hair resulted in him looking.

IMG_3209_zpsaspul5ao.jpg

Given that he's clad in Twisted Nex gang colours, it seems obvious enough that Boris is a member of von F's retinue - but, though he turned up in the Bay Area round about the same time that von F did, he doesn't seem to have any affiliation to the mad Magos and certainly isn't following anyone. For one thing, Boris first appeared about a month before von F's ship put in, and for another they're rarely if ever seen in the same area, and it may seem quite conclusive that the first time they were seen in the same place at the same time, von F expressed a great deal of surprise that Boris was A, on Necromunda, and B, not dead.

Communicating only in moans and groans, Boris's name is known only due to von F having called him by it on multiple occasions. He seems to be quite harmless if left alone, seeking only to find a high place to stand and groan disconsolately at the sky (or dome roof) for a while; however he responds to attacks upon his person (intentional or otherwise) with a terrifying implacable single-minded ferocity, and his hatred for the undead is absolute; he will stop at nothing to destroy any zombie that he happens upon.

The direction in which Boris groans when standing in a high place is very specific; were one to join him atop a structure outside on a clear enough night, with a powerful enough telescope, one would find that he is addressing his groans in the direction of Holy Terra.

Webcomic? :-D

You're coming up with some very stylish stuff with the hunting rifle and mechanicus symbol :)

Aye. It's very much WIP and completely unlaunched so far - I won't begin publishing until I have the entire plot built out blow-by-blow - but that's what it's probably going to end up being.

Anyway, two recently-painted low-level Admech personnel;

IMG_3210_zpsnrzilqhb.jpg

Ned Smithers and Ygor Stechkin are two hapless low-ranking members of the Admech who had the misfortune to be assigned as assistants to Magos von Frankenstern shortly before von F lost his remaining marbles; they're low enough in rank that they found themselves stuck serving him, for better or for worse.

Ygor is your generic laslock-toting tech-henchman; he is moderately educated in rituals of activation and catechisms of maintenance for a wide assortment of machineries, and serves as von F's primary laboratory assistant. Loyal to a fault, he is most likely to cause trouble for the mad Magos through responding with 'At onthe, marthter!' when he should probably have instead questioned his orders.

Ned is even further down the Mechanicus totem pole than Ygor. He's a menial labourer qualified to heft, carry, be sworn at, and tote autopistols. Despite his lowly station, he remains doggedly optimistic; to some men, happiness is the certain knowledge that you will go neither cold nor hungry tonight.

It's a mix of Ned Seagoon and Generic Dogsbody Name #3 - it's meant to invoke a cheerful downtrodden Goon Show-like idiot. Not sure how well it works, but that's neither here nor there. I could potentially go the whole hog and rename him Eccles.

The rotary autocannon's barrels are three pieces of plastic tubing from cotton wool buds, bound together at the muzzle end with a strip of very thin plasticard and got to look the part using the flame height adjustment turny bit from a lighter. The scrap of plasticard, the cotton wool buds, and two bits of GW sprue are the only parts of the gun that aren't part of a lighter. You can see roughly how it went together on the first page of this thread - the gun I mounted on the truck is a copy of this one.

coincidentally its a mix of Ned Flanders and Waylon Smithers (i just had to google his name for the spelling, i thought he was Weyland not Waylon ?) from the The Simpsons, its the only reason it seems wrong to me :)

im stalling on my steamroller trukk due to weapons, im never happy with how they look :D

It's etched brass from a GW basing kit.

I've got vague future thoughts around putting together a full-blown army of artscale Space Wolves, just at the 'it'd-be-nice-to' level at the moment - imagine a thousand points of these suckers, it'd be an insanely awesome thing to have looming over everything else in your miniatures cabinet even if you never actually got around to fielding them as an actual army. The current sub-project of what might be a project some time is to build a full squad of artscale Grey Hunters, just to prove to myself that I can. I also definitely want to artscale up my Thunderwolves' riders, and after that who knows. Who knows if it'll go further, even. Depends how much fun I have doing them. I'd love to have an artscale Ragnar Blackmane, and who knows. Maybe I'll build one some day. That'd be cool.

Whatever happens the artscale game seems like a good way to start in on learning to greenstuff properly, something I've been wanting to learn for a while. It's a bit OT for this forum so I won't be giving them much attention here, but good fun and good practice anyway and you're liable to see more big-size Sons of Russ kicking around in the background of whatever continued Necro/][munda/INQ28 related mayhem I get up to next.

They're not Zombies, it's a Scavvy Dance Party! :-D
(I can't remember who did it, as I am not awake right now, but have you considered doing a Zombie from each House?) :)

Not in particular. It was a class idea but I really don't find zombies inspiring - certainly not enough to dedicate more than about five minutes to converting one.

Anyway, Arbites! Just awaiting some etched brass to make their shoulder eagles, which I unfortunately decided was the way forwards after slinging a paintbrush at the first one, this being why his team are still bare plastic. Also needs a couple of other little (paint) finishing touches here and there before I base the painted guy, but this should give an idea of what I'm going for.

The Max Mini 'space police' heads are perfect. Speaking as a lifelong Dredd fan I knew I had to have them the moment I saw them, and it was just a matter of trawling through other Yakker's Arbites builds looking for Dreddlike part combinations.

The result is a mix of Cadian command torso and Space Marine scout everything else. One of the Forge World etch eagles should take them from 'very Dreddlike' to 'how Dreddlike can you get anyway' and I may even be forced to paint their gloves and boots green. I've definitely decided on a first name for the guy who's currently mostly-painted - Geronimo - but I'm not sure whether his second name should be Fred or Ned, or should I go the whole hog and dub him Judge Geronimo Dredd?

And here's his team,

Note that unlike almost everyone else in the galaxy they're exercising trigger discipline.

Judge, Jury and Executioner. There will be no repeat offenders! :)

is that Juve an Informant, or for some kind of "Capture the Juve" scenario? :)

Yeah, the Max Mini castings have quite a lot of neck - enough so that they'd be in danger of giraffe syndrome on top of a normal Space Marine torso. I'd trimmed them all but the heavy bolter guy didn't get quite as much trimmage as his mates. Easy enough to rectify though, given the resin head being held on with naught but a spot of superglue. He's less girraffy now.

The guy in the puffa jacket's all that and more. Civilian miniatures are one of those things you don't see often but when you stop and think about it there's just an insane amount of stuff you can use them for, enough so that you start being slightly surprised you don't see them more often. You can find zombies in the 'toolbox' of pretty much every Arbitraitor on the planet despite there being significantly less that you can do with a zombie than you can with a civvie. A zombie is a zombie and all it does is zomble; a civvie is everything and anything from an uncorrupted innocent for the enforcers to escort out of a zombie-infested sector to part of a mob for a Redemptionist preacher to whip into a frenzy to a customer at the Hive Guys franchise your gang are about to knock over.

Oh, and while the Arbites are indeed judge, jury and executioner, it bears highlighting that they're on Necromunda to enforce the Emperor's laws, not to go round randomly riddling the Emperor's subjects with negligent discharges;

The only difference between an 'ive city and a funeral pyre is the enforcement of law and order; that should be blindingly obvious even to 'umungous idiots. The part this dirtball's so-called nobles prefer to ignore is that if law enforcement is allowed to become mercurial, if the average creep on the street believes that 'ee'll be stomped into the plascrete by the Emperor's authorities whether or not 'ee obeys the Emperor's laws, 'ee's got no (CENSORED) reason 'ee can see to obey the Emperor's laws now 'as 'ee and that alone can provide the single spark it takes to set the entire world on fire. Always remember, we're here to make these scum behave themselves, not to make them attempt to defend themselves from us - so if you see one behaving 'imself, DON'T SHOOT 'IM! ARE YOU COMPLETELY OFF YOUR (CENSORED!) 'EAD? (CENSORED, CENSORED, by the Emperor is this CENSORED) me!

- Judge Geronimo Dredd, Hive Primus Justice Department.
