Shenanigans in the north of Scotland

Some new pit slave types waiting for a greenstuff finishing touch and probably some more bits round their bionics;

IMG_3108_zpsfpnzonks.jpg

Left to right, Miss Millicent Munro, Roto-Clouter Rick, and the Scissors Man. Once these three are completed I'll have miniatures for all six pit slave weapons.

Oh, come on! "the Scissors Man" and his name isn't Edward? :-D

He's taken from a piece of rather contemptible Victorian children's literature called Stupid Peter, one of the various utter drivel 'cautionary tale' type books published in that era and designed to scare children out of so-called 'bad habits'. In specific, 'The Scissors Man' would apparently show up and (using the scissors he was named for) cut off the thumbs of any child who sucked their thumb.

Don't ask me why the pit slave shears remind me of that - I don't know. Regardless, that's why he's in a gambolling sort of a pose, that's why I edited his face to produce a dopey smile, and that's why he'll be getting a greenstuff hairdo roughly like a judge's wig.

OK so this is going to be a little OT but anyway,

I just took delivery of something that's only marginally easier to find than rocking-horse manure; a group of 28mm-scale generic modern-style civilians, most heavily armed amongst them the bloke who's bunging a brick, and as anyone who's tried to find some can tell you those are an utter sod to find.

IMG_3116_zps6sy9kyjt.jpg

There's sixteen different sculpts here - I've got doubles of a couple of them - and though the casting quality is not perfect, quite a lot of flash on some of them, the miniatures themselves are... well, let's just say if you live in the UK and have been out of under your rock any time since the turn of the millennium, you're likely to be able to put a name to at least one of these guys and the chances of you never having met someone who's a spitting image for one of them are only marginally better than the chances of a UFO piloted by Elvis crashlanding on the Loch Ness Monster. I love them.

The method designed to base the miniatures is a bit odd. They come with 20mm bases (which look absurdly tiny beside the 25mm variety we're all used to) and have this sort of metal plate thing with a sculpted street surface texture on that fits on top of the base, then there's this sort of post cast onto the miniature's foot that goes into a matching hole in the base top.

They're from these folks, http://www.warmacre.com/ and if for whatever reason you're looking for modern 28mm civvies, well, you need look no further than the 'Modern' category on Warm Acre's website. I'd also like to highlight that Warm Acre are a pleasure to deal with and the sort of small outfit I just plain old like to give my money to.

Incidentally, you know that talk of a scavvy gang consisting of 37 scavvies armed only with knives and my related muttering about 28mm-scale chavs? To my intense amusement amongst these miniatures can be found exactly that: 28mm-scale chavs, only known source.

The Scissors Man uses a torso from the Mantic sci-fi zombie sprue, slightly chopped about. There's two similar torsos on each sprue.

Anyway Inquisitorial retinue, part the first. This group could equally well be used in INQ28 or ][munda and it doesn't particularly matter which. They're an expansion of sorts on my narrative with Urist McHelsing and loosely based on their namesakes from Bram Stoker's famous novel. Incidentally if you haven't read the original Dracula, why the ************ not?

From left to right, Enginseer Seward; Mr Johan van Harker; Inquisatrix Mina van Harker; Commissar Murray; and Guildmaster Abraham McHelsing.

Enginseer Seward became embroiled with then-Miss Murray's quest to purge all vampirekind from the galaxy at its very beginning, courtesy of the unfortunate fate of a young lady by the name of Lucy Westenra of whom he had long been an admirer and, it must be said, close friend. An expert operator of auspexii of all kinds and equally expert in matters of psychology both human and xenos, the good Enginseer has proven vital to the Inquisatrix's ongoing battle against the undead on numerous occasions despite his habit of wandering into harm's way with his nose buried in an auspex screen. Unusually for a tech-adept of his status he has very little in the way of cybernetics; he claims that this is because he's entirely too busy to take a time out to get any augmentic surgery done on him, but in truth it's mostly because he's scared spitless of needles.

Mr Johan van Harker is a man in an unusual position: that of an Inquisitor's spouse. Survivor of the very episode that first brought the undead to his future wife's attention, he can be considered one of her two most unshakably loyal accomplices largely as he loves her with all his heart and would gladly move the galaxy for her should she but ask. He is also an expert swordsman with something of a dramatic flair, and the victor of numerous duels.

Inquisatrix Mina van Harker, Ordo Xenos, is herself one of the few people alive today to have been bitten by a vampire and survived uncorrupted. Although rarely the most active of combatants nor gifted with psionic abilities, Inquisatrix van Harker has one of the finest minds in the galaxy, coupled to an unshakable faith in the Emperor and a will of adamantine. She should under no circumstances be underestimated - when she does produce a weapon, the next thing one discovers is that she is every bit as deadly with a sword as her husband and a crackshot with the hotrodded laspistol (personally crafted for her by Enginseer Seward) she carries concealed about her person.

Commissar Mercurio Murray (Hero of the Imperium) is a veteran of more wars than many men have had hot dinners; this man has personally shot an Ork Warlord dead and is called a friend by no lesser a man than Logan Grimnar himself, whom he has had the honour of serving alongside on a dozen separate occasions. A quiet, soft-spoken man who considers himself a simple soldier of the Imperium and finds the numerous decorations and accolades with which he has been showered over the years slightly embarrassing, he also happens to be the father of a certain Inquisatrix and on discovering quite what his beloved daughter had got herself into this time, he at once collected a hand-picked squad of his regiment's finest and reported to the then newly-minted Inquisatrix for duty; contents of the conversation that followed have never been publicly revealed but can be taken by context as largely consisting of the good Commissar adamantly stating his intention to make very certain that his daughter's back was adequately covered at all times. He remains her closest and most trusted advisor.

And lastly for now, Engineers Guildmaster Abraham McHelsing is one of Squatdom's top experts in esoteric warp entities and related foulness, the father of famed Squattish vampire hunter Urist McHelsing, and a long-term colleague of Enginseer Seward who, as it so happens, first introduced him to Inquisatrix van Harker (at that time Murray) in relation to the deteriorating condition of Miss Westenra. McHelsing correctly identified the source of Miss Westenra's strange malady, and was instrumental in the destruction of the bloodsucking fiend that had been preying upon her. Having lost the majority of his family to vampires many years ago, Abraham shares a special hatred for the undead with his surviving son Urist, and has decided to travel with Inquisatrix van Harker for so long as her crusade against such fell entitites should continue; he well knows that her hatred of vampires is every bit as personal as his own.

Interesting comparison is interesting.

Dry-fitted Puppets War 'buggi' and a 1/43 VW Beetle.

I got this thing as an impulse buy along with the heads for my planned Arbites and turns out it'll be just as at home hooning around in Necromunda's ash wastes as in the deserts out of Mektown, Nice (and really rather Volkswagenny) little bit of kit.

Driver, dry fit. I had to move the steering wheel outboard a little to line it up with the seat, and the same goes for one of the pedals.

Can hopefully also be (just) made out; some expended brass and empty shotgun cartridges in the footwell. The driver's sawn-off shotgun used to be a Night Goblin spear and a bit of sprue.

Edit: Why did I type 'Nick Goblin'?

A portrait of three friends. Left to right; Engineseer Seward whom we've met before, Sir Arthur Holmwood, Lord Godalming; and a servo-skull crafted from the mortal remains of their former friend and romantic rival Lieutenant Quincy Morris.

IMG_3124_zpsjrslx85u.jpg

Even those who survive the depredations of a vampire without lasting physical or spiritual injury are frequently scarred for life, and Sir Arthur Holmwood, Lord Godalming, is a case in point. The ruin that the fell beast known to the galaxy as Vlad the Devil made of his beloved has left him with very little about which he still cares; the shell of her remains, but the vital spark that was his Lucy is gone and there isn't an awful lot left of the fop that he used to be either. Now the shotgun with which he used to, in happier times, shoot game birds serves to reap his vengeance against the undead, and the position he inherited from his father is merely another tool towards that exact same objective.

The servo-skull that used to be Lt Morris is configured for scouting and covert surveillance purposes, thus the compact profile intended to allow it to slip through tight spaces and conceal itself more easily. In life, the good Lieutenant served as a point man and forwards observer for his companions, frequently alerting them to trouble in their path and saving them from walking into several ambushes; in death, he continues to work towards that end.

These look great, ive been thinking of getting into INQ28/Inquisimunda just for an excuse to hack some more things together :D i have the Eisenhorn and Space Marine models from the original Inquisitor range too, do you know if these are still available anywhere other than ebay ?

They've been OOP for a while - they're ebay jobs these days.

On the up side, GW are far from the only people who've ever made 54mm miniatures. It's a downright weird scale for wargaming, mind - I can't think of ever hearing of anything other than Inquisitor in that scale - but it's popular with the historic modelling crowd; much easier to get all the details of say a Napoleonic cavalry uniform in a bigger scale.

I was thinking more for display purposes, i always liked the size/detail of them, lets hope i can find some bargains on ebay, would be cool to have an inquisitorial retinue on display i think

thats pretty cool, are they terminator legs or something else ? id never really thought about space marines not being the correct scale until i read something the other day pointing it out :D now its glaringly obvious !

Yeah, Termie legs with the shins refinished, they came out of one of the various bits boxes I've bought over the last wee while.

Here's the thread with how-tos I'm semi following: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/130115-modelling-doghouse-pattern-truescale-marines/

Still got quite a lot of work to do on this guy - he'll need a couple more rounds of greenstuff and some polishing of his extant greenstuff even before I get to his arms, including some on the bottom of each foot to make him even taller as his legs aren't quite long enough for his torso right now, and I'm not yet sure what to build his shoulder pads out of - but he's heading in the right direction.
