What would you call this race of ratmen? Skaven seems to be a little on the nose.
I've read "Ver'myn" somewhere, so thats what I'm going with for now until I can find something more fitting. :)
My headcanon is that these really are Skaven from the Mortal Realms who accidentally arrived in the underhives by way of gnawhole or skittergate, lost the means to return back the way they came, and are nonetheless bemused by the local man-things behaving like Skaven themselves.
This is a great idea!
I've been looking at doing something similar, but maybe using Escher as the base instead, trying to make every weapon as unstable and deadly as possible, the true Skaven way!
The Unstable route I'd wager really belongs to an allegiance with the Rogue Factoria, what with having access to discount rare weapons prone to critical malfunction.

Consider your "headcanon" about that gnawhole stolen good sir! I love that idea!

I haven't really looked that much into the different allegiances yet, but I assume some crafty Skaven would be able to make some bargains. ;)
I'll definitely check those out!

The delegation that the Rogue Factoria uses is also prime real estate for Skaven conversions too, since you're obligated to bring their work party along if your gang has any such counterfeit weapons. Think of them as the accompanying warlock engineer and his workshop minions.

I've finally gotten started on a heavy weapon rat.

Flash Git torso, arms and weapon base, Rat Ogre lower legs and tail, spare Stormfiend ratling gun with assault cannon rail, and Stormvermin head.

Apart from being a one-rat ratling gun "team", I intend on using this brute as a "twin-linked heavy stubber"-equipped stigg-shambler.

Further progress. Didn't have anything suitably sized for the rotor base of the barrels, so I opted to Green Stuff it.

I'll need to do some more Green Stuff work around the shoulders, but so far so good.

So all went well up until grenades and heavy bolters got involved with a string of nasty rolls. As a result, I recently lost 4 gang members in their current campaign, including both champions. There was not going to be any way of being able to recover effectively, so I reluctantly disbanded the gang.

With that said, I'm still raring for another chance at a Skaven-themed gang. It's rather fortunate then that the Book of the Outcast is looking pretty nice as the base. Although I will not be able to snag a Stig-Shambler, no longer will I have to find myself pigeonholed into House clan gimmicks that do not suit the theme outside of weapon options and allegiances, and have some freedom in how I set it up. I'll still likely make it a genestealer-infected gang all the same for the Rat Ogre "Aberrant" though.

I've stuck to keeping the Cawdor affiliation for the equipment and allegiance with the Rogue Factoria.

Leader (Mastermind) - Arch-Warlock w/ Polearm and Hand Flamer - Mentor
Champion (Gunslinger) - Jezzail w/ Long Rifle and Stub Gun (Dum-Dum) - Fast Shot
Champion (Gunslinger) - Globadier w/ Grenade Launcher (Frag, Krak, Smoke) and Stub Gun (Dum-Dum) - Fast Shot
Champion (Survivor) - Fangleader w/ Chainsword, Power Pick, and Stub Gun (Dum-Dum) - True Grit
Ganger - Stormvermin w/ Blunder-pole
Ganger - Clanrat w/ Stub Gun
Ganger - Clanrat w/ Stub Gun
Ganger - Clanrat w/ Stub Gun
Ganger - Clanrat w/ Stub Gun
Hanger-on - Rogue Doc w/ Stub Gun

Despite the custom names for fighter types, they still follow the rules of the Underhive Outcast Leader, Champion, and Hive Scum. It's also been house-ruled that the champions are able to choose their archetype separate from the leader.

Still a little unsure as to what starting skill I should give to the Fangleader (AKA Stormvermin Champion) though. Berserker may be a better fit given his armament.

Thoughts? Queries? Concerns?

Can you start with Hangers-on? Or is that a campaign allowance since you're a few games in?

Its thematic, I take it the clanrats job is to catch bullets, as is the skaven way.

It's been a ruling in my gaming group that we can take hangers-on at gang creation, much like how you can hire support staff at the start of a Blood Bowl season, so long as we remain within the limit established by our gang's reputation.

A slowww reply for me, but 40k Skaven already have a name. Have a look at Hrud.
The Hrud Jezzail is even a weapon in the Trading Post (or Black Market?)

The only confusing thing is that Hrud have been depicted as both rat men with long rifles or these weird long arm things.

The Hrud have sadly been kinda re-written into these wierd semi-humanoid aliens and no longer have the old skavenish lore they had way back in the day. :)

And yet, their old Skaven style weapons still exist in Necromunda. You can stretch the fluff to fit them both in. Perhaps they simply come from the same planet, thus the confusion over their name?

Hmm...Maybe...

So far, I've gone the "Clan Shrykt" route...
The Clan disappeared through a giant gnaw gate in the warhammer fantasy lore and was never seen again, in my current campaign, Clan Shrykt has reappeared and used their creativity to "enhance" the tech of Necromunda to their own designs, creating wierd, powerful and dangerous weapons, giving themselves crazy augmentations and so on... :)

I know what you are going at with the Hrud, but to me, it feels like GW made an oopsie and jumped away from the 40k Skaven.
And a Jezzail is just another word (arabian maybe?) for long rifle...

Even though I love the old school art of the Hrud, those small critters with the cloaks! :D

My friend is just starting Necromunda with a Skaven gang. He'll be using Chaos rules for his Horned Rat worshippers. Let's see how early he can get someone to mutate into a Rat Ogre!
