Hi all,

When using the Enforcers’ SLHG Assault Ram, can I continuously use the Scare Gas Reload Trait (5+) to reload my Frag grenades and give it a better reload chance? Or would I have to use the Frag grenade reload (6+)?

Wondering if the Scare Gas’ Scarce trait interacts with this in any way.

Thanks!

This has been discussed so many times for several years.

I don't remember if the grenade launcher part of assault ram counts as a proper standalone grenade launcher when adding ammo? It might not be applicable for additional ammo types. Further, is scare gas scarce? I thought it was limited. And regardless, this is a topic of reloading weapons with multiple ammo types, not just assault ram. It is a known problem in the rules that has never been addressed:

When reloading you can use any of the profiles the weapon has regardless of what profile was used when you failed. If you fail an ammo check while firing Frag you can still use the ammo stat of a different profile when reloading. In a regular Grenade Launcher it's common in my group for peopel to buy Smoke Grenades for this reason, a 15 credit Common upgrade to reload on 4+ instead of 6 even if you never intend to fire Smoke.

Scarce does raise a question though. I think most people only apply Scarce if you fail an ammo check while firing that ammo type, so reloading after firing Frag would be fine to use the Scare gas profile. However, the rules for multiple profiles do say that if you fail with one profile you count as failing with them all, which could be read as meaning Scarce and Limited kick in regardless of which ammo was used and then the Scare gas profile wouldn't be able to be reloaded so you have to use the Frag profile (or another if there are others available) or get to an ammo crate to ignore Scarce. I doubt that is intended though. I don't think Stub guns are supposed to run out of Dum-dums when firing regular ammo. On the other hand, I do think Plasma Pistols would have Scarce on both their profiles apply when failing with one (I don't think running out on Low would mean you could reload with the Max profile, you'd need to get to an ammo crate), so I'm not too sure if there's a consistent interpretation or if it should be a case-by-case thing based on narrative and vibes.

You point out a key difference which I'm sure was intended in rules, but may not have been sufficiently clear: Multiple weapons profiles is not the same as multiple ammo types, ref stub gun with dumdum and plasma. For this topic, it's only about ammo though.

Is there really a difference though? Buying additional ammo types gives the weapon a new profile. I mean, the opening line of the rules for Multiple Weapon Profiles on p118 of the Core rulebook is "Some weapons have more than one weapon profile - shotguns, for example can be loaded with several different types of ammunition." It then goes on to say you need to "declare which profile","chosen from the profiles available", before again using a shotgun as the example with "'solid' and 'scatter' ammo as standard, and may be loaded with and use 'executioner' ammo if purchased."

The rules for Multiple Weapon Profiles are the rules for having multiple ammo types. That's where the rules say that failing one means failing all, and that the weapon will need to be reloaded but the player can choose which profile to use for that reload. It also says that Scarce or Limited profiles cannot be used for the rest of the battle if they fail an ammo test but doesn't say if that only applies if it was being used when the test was failed or if it is triggered by the "considered to have failed an Ammo test for all of its profiles" clause. The Limited trait does say that it's deleted from the fighter/vehicle card "if a weapon fails an Ammo test while using Limited ammo" so I guess that's the dumdum rounds partially covered, they aren't removed from the card but they might still be unusable for the rest of the battle. The Scarce trait unfortunately doesn't clear anything up.

So when it comes to the SLHG Assault Ram using Scare Grenades to reload on a 5+, yes if Scarce only applies if you fail an Ammo test while using that profile, no if Scarce applies when you fail an Ammo test with any profile.
