What happens if I throw a smoke grenade somewhere and fail to hit?

Does it just not go off?

Am I missing some rule somewhere? Purchased the rules today be kind:)

My flawed logic is... rules for krak grenade if it roll to hit misses nothing happens. Same would apply to smoke grenade. It would work fine if the smoke grenade had a template 3 rules so it would scatter off somewhere and start smoking wherever the scatter took it? Tell me I am wrong please

On the similar topic... is there a rule that prevents me to shoot template weapon into or through the smoke?

Or do I still need some vision (goggles) to allow it?

Congrats on spotting those issues on your first read-through! It's something that the writers didn't manage to do ;)

It's generally assumed that Smoke should follow the Blast rules and the writers simply forgot to add the Blast (5") trait to both Smoke grenades profiles. Otherwise, Smoke grenades would have to target a fighter and would not scatter, which doesn't seem intended. Note that it also means there is a chance for them to misfire.

With the rules as written, you can place templates however you want, which does allow you to hit fighters you normally can't target because they are invisible to you (pinned fighters in cover, or fighter hiding in smoke clouds or in the darkness). Given the relatively high cost of template weapons, this could very well be an intended feature.

I don't think smoke is intended to have the blast rule. Because if it did, it would cause hits and therefore pin.
Which is why I think the Devs went for the wording of Smoke that they did.

It seems clear that smoke is intended to be targeted like blasts, hence it says "after determining the position..." As opposed to "if it hits..." IMO is just escaped the Dev's notice that that isn't actually how things work.

They should have used wording more similar to Grav, but alas.

It doesn’t cause hits and Pin as it is stated under smoke rules tat it doesn’t do that... think flash grenade does the same thing ....

Smoke explicitly can't hit or pin, so I don't think it's really an issue. Sure, there is technically a conflict between "hits every fighter under the marker" and "can't hit fighters" but it's easily solved when you realize every weapon with Smoke also has Blast.
With this caveat, adding Blast to Smoke weapons produces what I think is the intended result.
