Hi all,

quick question regarding the maximum characteristics - Core Rulebook Page 73:

“During Campaign play, characteristics may be improved or reduced as fighters gain experience and suffer injuries. No characteristic may ever be improved beyond the maximum shown on the table below” (Table shows a maximum of 8")

A Fighter with Movement 7" uses a Stimm-Slug Stash (+2").
Does he have 8" (because it is the maximum for the movement characteristic) or 9"?

First thought: The additional movement is only temporary and not a permanent improvement. Also, it says "During a Campaign". But the "may ever" sounds absolute.

What do you think? 8" or 9"?

How does the stim-slug stash work (what is the wording of the rules for it)? Does it actually increase the Movement characteristic, or does it add 2" to the distance the fighter can move? If it adds 2", maybe that doesn't count as an increase to the Movement characteristic itself... So in your example, the fighter's movement remains 7" after taking the stim-slug, but he gets to increase the distance he can move by 2" for a total of 9". On the other hand, if the wording of the stim-slug stash rules says that it gives the figher +2 Movement, then it would seem to be in conflict with the Core Rulebook page you cited.

I looked at different bonuses to Movement.
The wording uses "increase" and "add", and is (so far) consistently speaking of the "Movement Characteristic"

  • Is there a global and absolute speed limit? (Page 73: "No characteristic may ever be improved beyond the maximum")
  • Is it allowed to combine bonuses? E.g. the Agility Skill 'Sprint' with a Stimm-Slug Stash? (could result in a Movement Characteristic way beyond 8")

Stimm-Slug Stash: ... the fighter’s Move, Strength and Toughness characteristics are each increased by 2.”

Jump booster (overcharged): ... allowing them to add D3+3" to their Movement
characteristic for the duration of this action.

Sprint: ... they can use the second to Sprint. This lets them move at double their Movement characteristic for the second Move (Simple) action.”

"Until the end of the round, the fighter’s Move, Strength and Toughness characteristics are each increased by 2."

Seems to improve the stat directly.

SERVO HARNESS p 290 of the new rules book 2023.

Partial: 130 credits – Rare (12) A fighter wearing a partial servo harness gains a +2 modifier to their Strength characteristic and a +1 modifier to their Toughness characteristic. This may take them above their maximum characteristics but it is not a permanent increase and will be lost should the servo harness be lost or cease to function for any reason.

This mean that as long as the condition is met you can temporaly go beyond the maximum characteristic.

Interesting. On the other hand, bionics cannot not go over max: "may not take any characteristics beyond the maximum characteristics". So there's a bit of both. Ideally max would be max always and there would be no question, but here we are...

SUSPENSOR HARNESS p 291 of the new rules book 2023.

A fighter equipped with a suspensor harness may carry four weapons rather than three, while a Hired Gun Bounty Hunter with a suspensor harness may carry six weapons rather than five. As usual, weapons marked on the Equipment List with (*) take up the space of two weapons.

Limitation on maximum doesn't apply only to characteristics while the condition is met. So i think there is a logic here. This equippement add while bonics replace. that's why they don't add beyond the limit.

My understanding is that the quoted paragraph from p73 is referring to stat changes specifically from spending Xp and from suffering Lasting Injuries. Stat changes from equipment aren't restricted in that manner unless specified. If equipment couldn't take a fighter over M8 then Escher Cutters granting M9 would be a problem. I need to go double check my Phyrr Cats' advances though, as I've just realised they can only get one Movement advance (barring injuries) and after that any rolls of Movement/Initiative instead make them Specialists.

Vehicles have a different speed limit:

Core Rulebook Page 76: Vehicle Characteristic Profiles

“During Campaign play, characteristics may be improved or reduced as vehicles are upgraded and as the crew gains experience or suffers injuries. No characteristic may ever be improved beyond the maximum shown on the table below. No characteristic may ever be reduced below the minimum shown on the table below:”

The maximum shown on the table for Vehicle Movement is 12".

Ah, thanks. I was misguided by the Escher vehicle tactics cards cover. 😁

Well it's not the only confusing one. The van saar grave cutter is not a vehicle either. A boost to movement for mount like the Esher one will require to rename a drug a Prometheus additive.

The Cawdor Prospects with robo-legs are also mounts, so out of the 5 Houses (not counting Delaque who haven't got anything yet) only 2 actually got a vehicle while 3 got mounts!

Fighters with mounts aren't allowed any other wargear that affects movement so unfortunately can't have go-faster drugs, or a partial servo-harness, full servo-harness is fine though.

Mounts themselves though might be a concern. A fighter with a movement of 4" gets a Waster Dirtbike, which says it increases the user's Movement to 8.

Edit: That is an increase of 4 to the characteristic, in that example. More than the "maximum increase of 2 allowed" from the same paragraph.

The thing is, all gangs are getting "vehicle tactics" regardless of whether they actually have any gang-specific vehicles or not. Escher doesn't have, so they used the second best thing for marketing, their new mount. And regardless, "vehicle tactics" is more like "ash wastes battlefield" tactics that affects all things related to the new battlefield type, not only vehicles but also mounts. It's just a name that covers the main theme universally.

For the dirt bike it does state the fighter movement is 8". However since the fighter has another card for use without the mount, say in the under hive they can still upgrade Thier movement just it applies on foot.

to push the bike? :)

but seriously mount and bike shoudl not be the same. Riding a giant saber tooth cat should not be the same as riding a dirt bike. That's my main issue.
