Necromunda Stoof's Project Thread

Considering how relentlessly mocked things like that Grey Knight battlesuit and the Primaris scout cybot thing were in some parts for having no enclosed cockpit, it feels odd to see the same thing nostalgically praised elsewhere.

But, me putting my hand dangerously close to the woodchipper of arguing taste aside, the old-old one you can sometimes find has the pilot spread-eagle at the front, painted with a bright yellow codpiece over dark chainmail in the original artwork. „Shoot me in the crotch, coward!“ is a whole new level of intimidation.

Well it did have rules for a forcefield to protect the pilot back in the day and i just liked the stripped down ultra high tech aesthetic it gave. Although the in the version I remember the pilot had his legs together, not spread eagled.

Oh dear I just had a look at how much the combat patrol box is... £85 is not that bad when it's easily 50% of a 2nd edition army...

Combat patrol boxes are the rarest of GW beasts... A reasonable deal.

Priced individually the contents come to something like £160-170 at GW prices so about £130 3rd party. Including the Farseer single plastic sprue, who inexplicably is priced at TWENTY CRISP POUNDS to buy separately.

All for £100 direct from GW or £85 from elsewhere.

That "bargain" temptation is how we ended up deciding to do combat patrol armies.

Admittedly I then blew it by ordering other stuff, naturally 😄

... anyway, the kits are nice and fun to paint, I don't think you'd regret it. If I did it again I'd go for Biel Tan, the other iconic 90s Eldar scheme (never fancied the red ones).

I've given in and ordered a box. I always wanted to do an Eldar army but never got further than buying the codexes.

Even with the other stuff I'd want for a 2nd edition army it's still going to be only about £250. Quite frankly if GW still supported their older editions (or had never really changed their rules like Battletech) I'd still be buying their stuff on a regular basis. It's the constant churn of new editions, new codexes and the ever increasing amounts of models that killed my interest in 40k (I did continue playing fantasy battle up until GW killed the game).

Edit: man that ended up being a bit sumpy...

My first memories of Eldar were they seemed to be all Alaitoc - blue bodies and yellow bullet helmets.

Mine were Biel Tan though, after I saw some in a White Dwarf battle report.

Then Ulthwe seemed to take over and were everywhere.

By 3rd it was Biel Tan everywhere.

Now I never see any Alaitoc armies at all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think my epic scale was Alaitoc. I made up my own craftworld for 40k. “Darkhölm” which was black and Ptholo Blue (Ral Partha color, a dark yet translucent blue). I used Goth embellishments.

Was never a fan of the original War Walker, but the exposed pilot has kinda grown on me, especially since the release of the Sisters of Battle’s Baby Carrier.

I always justified heroes not wearing helmets with them having some kind of field armour, but for some reason never carried that across to War Walkers…

Perhaps neither Heroes nor Walkers have field armour, they are just out there proving how tough they are by exposing their flesh meats to the universe filled with enemies? 🤷

Looks awesome. What's next and why is it a unit of Striking Scorpions? :sneaky:

I had an accident whilst walking past a hobby shop on holiday.

A sneaky eBay purchase to appease @Trafalgar Law and @MusingWarboss, broken up, stripped, cleaned and reassembled.

This was the second time I'd assembled it, as the "obvious" way up of the central body pod is in fact the wrong way up going by the picture on the old box/breakdown on the back. It's something that evidently many, many people didn't realise going by the number of assembled ones available with the body upside down.

Very front heavy and with a narrow gait when it's upside down.

I made my own 60mm (apparently 64mm) base out of some plywood as I don't have spares.

Ah, there we go, that's the old-old one I meant.

You really gotta hand it to the Eldar, going into battle not only crotch-first, but with nothing but chainmail leggings and a "dare you to kick me in the fork" pose between you and the enemy, that kind of bravery takes millennia of warrior culture to cultivate.

No old school square base?
(I’m pretty sure mine had the body upside down. But they did come in a blister pack with no directions…)
