Stoof's Project Thread

I've been building my Pillage Anglo Saxons. The Victrix set - this gives you more figures than you'll need for normal 400-600 point Pillage games, but allows for options (unarmoured speed run, or armoured up tanking?)

It's a nice set.
I haven't done much in the way of kitbashing or converting them beyond swapping weapons about from different sprues. I was careful to build some of my swordsmen and spearmen so they match the weapons, shield size and head (as close as possible) to the mounted guys, since you need a foot version of any mounted figures for if they lose the horse. I just have to remember to paint them the same too!

There's lots of flexibility in the list. Chief, Horn dude and Banner bearer (that may never be taken), three Huscarls with their Dane Axes, a core of fully armoured infantry (6 swords, 2 spears) and a spread of Some-Armoured swordsmen and spearmen (4 each) to support the others and run around since they are faster on their feet.

Topped off with some archers and lightning fast unarmoured slingers, and the cavalry (2 swords, 2 spears).

It's quite a lot to paint, but the detail on them isn't too extreme so fingers crossed it will go smoothly enough. First I need to break out the polyfilla to blend all those 25mm bases into the figures' puddle bases.

That’s a cool rule that mounted models need a dismounted version just in case. I wonder why GW didn’t have a similar rule.
I’ve noticed a similar thing by in Bolt Action, whether it’s horses or bicycles once dismounted you need the “on foot” version.

It's the same as GW's LOTR rules. In fact the entire game is quite closely inspired by them.
Did Alessio have a hand in that [LOTR]? He might be the one ushering in the obvious.

Bases blended with polyfilla, undercoated, ready for the main painting.

Browns, dull yellows, reds, greens and blues will be the order if the day, though I may go brighter than would be realistic because I would like them to pop a bit on the tabletop.

I'll also be thinking up some shield designs to freehand, I didn't buy the transfers because everyone bought the transfers and why would thousands of guys have the same shield? So I'll be looking for inspiration and doing my own. I may live to regret this decision.

Like @ClockworkOrange mentioned in his thread, I haven't painted a horse since the 90's, so this will be interesting.

Just don't ask why you can't get back on the motorcycles...

The middle ages was a brighter place than you might think. Bright colours and garish combinations were often favoured judging by a lot of the artwork. Just avoid the rare colours like turquoise blues, purples and carmine reds as those dyes were very expensive requiring rare ingredients.

Stoof's very low resolution pictorial battle report AKA "Stoof tries out the basic rules during a company wide presentation". FA is Full Armour, SA is Some Armour, UA is Unarmoured. HW is hand weapon, bow is... well, you can probably guess that one.

It's a small party of the sneaky Letters gang vs the vicious Numbers gang!

Turns 1 & 2 were just moving around from opposite corners to get into position, they couldn't see each other so no action.

Turn 3
Turn 3.png

They set eyes on one another!

Turn 4
Turn 4.png

Chieftain 1 charges into lightly armoured C... but it goes badly wrong as C wounds him then D shoots into the melee and kills him... oops!
On the other side of the hall, Cheiftain A fights to a standstill against lightly armoured C - no wounds scored.
Archer 4 shoots and kills B!

Turn 5
Turn 5.png

2 avenges 1 by cutting down C.

Turn 6
Turn 6.png

D slinks away up the field (difficult terrain halves movement). I made a mistake here and fired him twice when he should only have shot once after moving - no matter as both missed fighter 2, who is scooting up the field for revenge.
Chieftain A is wounded by archer 4, who slinks away a little.

Turn 7
Turn 7.png

2 charges archer D but mucks it up, losing his bonus. He wins the melee though, cutting down the pesky archer. A theme repeated on the other side with Chieftain A taking out Archer 4.

Two fighters remain standing - Wounded Chieftain A and fighter 2... a 50/50 match up.

Turn 8 they were approaching each other, A using the road to move faster.

Turn 9
Turn 9.png

They clash... and fail to hurt one another.

Turn 10
Turn 10.png

2 falls to the blade of a victorious A!

Turn 11.png

A victory for pink formatted cells everywhere.

You aren't procrastinating, you're composing your workspace for greater efficiency!
Just think how well everything is going to (eventually) go and how easy it's going to be to paint those Saxons (one day)!
When that time comes, you are going to look back at this post with wry satisfaction.

I'm useless at batch painting, so as usual I've ended up with a few nearly done, a whole spectrum of part done and some not done at all.

My issue has been that although they all share a rough colour scheme, it's in a different place everywhere and I only use little blobs of paint on my palette, so when my blob runs out I tend to move to a different colour.

Bolt Action batch painting was much easier as they were mostly identical.

I also got distracted with embroidery on my Chieftain's cloak.

14 out of 19 of my initial 600 gold force are ready for shields and basing. It feels like a long slog.

So, in the correct modeller manner, when lacking motivation to finish one set of miniatures, I've done the only sensible thing.

Added more to the pile.

Gripping Beast monks and ambulatory loot.

If you haven't got a half dozen or so different projects at various stages of completion you aren't doing it right.

The initial 600gp band are all at the shield-and-bases stage. Phew! There are 13 models for the rest of the force and they're not strictly necessary - just options for different styles of game or bigger games.

And now I get to think up some saxon-style designs for shields, which is not something I've done very often. Should be fun!

Radiation definitely is, the pokeball probably is going by the kind of geometric patterns that crop up in historical designs frequently.

I finished the rest of this batch - all different with no consistent theme, I figured that's probably quite realistic. Individuals with varied artistic talents.

Old chap hiding at the back there with a portrait of Jesus on his shield would rather be at home with his watercolours than standing in a shield wall.
