Territories Shared Between Gangs

This is for NCE2018

I've seen quite a few threads here with tips on how to have Territories that you can control, which are fixed, and your gang opponents can conquer them from you. Well, I like the idea that you can win and lose something more than XP, but I am not a fan of the snowballing that you can lose all your territories due to bad luck and then have no rebound. So I wanted to throw this out here:

I'm about to start a campaign.

The game functions as a normal campaign, except for allocation of territory. The available territories are fixed, but more than one gang work each territory at a time. Only one gang however can be that territory’s Top Dog, which will grant you the Top Dog Bonus. So there’ll be a map showing all the territories, and the various players will be able to put needles into their territories. You get 1 needle for every 200 Gang Rating you have. Each needle grants you access to one Territory.

All gangs who have a needle in a territory may work the particular Territory after each round if they can and will. One gang will always be the Top Dog on a territory (randomly allocated on the first round). The Top Dog Bonus is two fold. Example. There is a territory named The Imperial Chance Club. It counts as a gambling house.

1) There is a story driven element, based on the themes of the territories. Being Top Dog on the above mentioned Gambling house gives you 1 of 3 Gambling Monopoly Tokens. If you get all 3, (your gang is heavily invested in gambling and nightlife) you’ll get story wise perks. Temporary income, added Hive Scum, story progression, and so on.

2) It functions as a Gambling House, and all the gangs can send a ganger to collect 2d6x10 [gambling], The Top Dog however can collect 2d6x10 without the gambling clause. This particular effect is dependent on the particular territory.

Underdogs in a territory may of course Challenge the Top Dog position. The Arbitrator should facilitate how, but it could simply be through a Gang Fight, but player creativity should be rewarded.
  • If the Top Dog can’t defend his position, he loses the Top Dog position, and a connected Monopoly Token to the Attacker. The Defender can’t work this territory this turn. The attacker becomes Top Dog, and can go to town with a little more bravado than before.

  • If he defends his position, the attacker can’t work this territory this turn.

  • The loser may opt to move his needle to a new location. Rules for this is not specified yet.

this is an interesting concept... but i’m thinking it should be reserved for special territories instead of all of them. the gambling house in your example could be more like a casino than a secret, back room, high stakes poker game.

I love it, settlements, only the top dog rolls for juves, but even random income ones, just grant to dog a reroll if they want.

Tunnels and vents, top dog infiltrate 3,every one else only 2.

Be aware if it's based on rating, territories will grow quicker than is usual for nce campaigns

Its not connected to gang rating. If an under dog challenges the top dog, he can take the top dog title from him. So the current top dog siguation should be fluent and ever changing. If it was gang rating related, it would create snow balling I guess.

interesting... so the top Rated gang could potentially be the Underdog on all territory?

That may help level the field in a campaign.

Precisely.

But one thing is the Top Dog effect of the various territories. Another effect is that I've grouped each territory into a type of crime or sale. Territories have to do with drugs, alcohol, smuggling, trafficking, hive harvests (spore cave etc), and gambling.

If a gang can get a monopoly getting Top Dog on all of one type of territories (such as all the Drug Territories), then they've dominated the drug market. If this happens, they'll get small bonuses, or story treats that will favor their position. Not something huge or game breaking, but something to reward that the player is a real gangsta.
