Necromunda The ballad of how I lost my mind and decided to paint a ton of stuff

I still have to do my Master of Education, and I am slowly doing it. This year, I have an evening lecture, which is online and awesome. It's on Mycology, which is very interesting, and all slides are online, which means I can listen to the lecture while painting at the same time. Bliss.

So, first picture, the pipe thingie that will be attached to the silo, first in its pristine stage and then after rust inking.

The scaffold that will go around the thingie. I love how it accidentally fits exactly into the space originally meant for a hatch, which I hope is kind of visible in the picture.

With this, all pieces of the tile are ready, now I only have to glue them in place. Might do that today, but right now I'm listening to how hypertrophic parasitic mycelium infiltrates plants. I am enjoying myself immensely.

Deathguard, rotting underhive terrain, professional advancement through mycology lectures - you've won life's lottery my friend! Enjoy it while the rest of us look on in envy!!!

It works superbly well!! I wanted to do something similar with my platforms like that - nice to see those plastic bits work well here.

I tend to think towers with holes in the middle deserve to have something in that space otherwise it looks a bit odd - like why did they just randomly have a hole in the tower floor!! 🤣

Makes sense that the platform would be for inspection or maintenance of some system or another.

So I got around to gluing everything down, but didn't get around to taking pictures.

First off, a little detail, it's uncanny how well this pipe thingie fits. I will henceforth shut up about the pipe thingie.

Then a bit of an overview:

And finally, the whole thing from above:

It's already been stored in the mighty Ivar and my proof of concept works, two 1x1 tiles fit in there behind each other with only a few inches overhanging the shelf, which really isn't an issue.

So while the terrain mill is grinding on, I'm going to scale back the grinding a little bit, because I'm not sure what exactly I want to do next tile-wise. I have, however, gotten around to checking how much Zone Mortalis stuff I actually have (all from the Dark Uprising kit). My problem was, I never knew what I wanted to do with the kit, as just having a few random walls somewhere seemed weird. So then I thought, what about one really big wall?

Okay, more long than big, but when I arrange all these sections together, they measure out 54 inches, which is longer than the width of a standard Necromunda table. If I stick all the various elevators, stairs and ladders that came with the box on them, they should be reasonably easy to traverse, and direct the flow of gameplay instead of slowing it to a halt.

Now I'm just debating with myself how exactly I want the sections arranged. Also, I think I'll try and forego bases on these, they seem sturdy enough on their own, and it would make storage easier. And while I do all that, I'll also pivot slightly so I don't spend the rest of the year painting walls. More on that later.

Decided to get a little break from all the terrain (though I am slowly gluing the ZM walls together) and paint a guy I got over a year ago:

He's a bloke that's more nooks and crannies than bloke, and I'm not entirely happy with my "several shades of yellow" approach, but he's getting there. He'll probably be the prototype for my other maggotkin models, because I do have a few and might try the new-ish spearhead format that AoS is doing now if I manage to paint enough of them. And yes, I always prototype my paint schemes with some sort of character model, which isn't recommended by anyone, but I do it anyway.

Been a pretty shitty two weeks, despite having last week off due to school holiday. Long long story, but essentially Primecat managed to find the one paperclip in the whole apartment covered in plastic, which she loves chewing, and needed surgery to get it out. Not fun, not really a relaxing holiday. But she's on the mend now, and I eventually got a teeny bit of hobby in.

First, I did declare I would do Squats, because GW generously announced they'd be getting the "House of..." treatment, with specialists and all. And even vehicles, before my beloved Delaque. Quiet your weeping, my bald fishyboys, our day will come yet, you will see. THEY WILL ALL SEE!

Ahem.

Anyway, dug out the Squats, primed them white, and did this:

Holy hazard stripes, Sheenbirdman, Contrast paints create a saturated orange. Still have to work out how to tone this down, probably an Agrax Earthshade wash followed by some chipping, no way something this bright doesn't get roughed up in the wastes. As a hidden upside, this will definitely prevent forgetting to activate models that blend with the board.

Also, I bought these GS world tentacle rollers a while ago for my Death Guard. Finally sat down and tried them out with Milliput, because it's less sticky than Green Stuff. First results are promising!

And finally, in a move very reminiscent of how I started my Death Guard, I found out I have most of a Nurgle army. Considering I've wanted to start an AoS army I actuallyy play for some time (I love my boat dwarves, but their rules are still boring enough to make Grimnir weep) I bought a Spearhead box and began some lengthy prep work not worth photographing.

Among other things I wanted the bases to show the army marching through a fen, so puddles and small ponds separated by clumps of overgrown soil. This included using water effects for the first time, and this happened:

Well, they can't all be winners. Lessons learned: I used WAY too much water effect, should probably apply it with an eye dropper, and will tone the whole thing down massively, because it's not the effect I'm looking for. Might even scrap it and make normal bases if I can't find a solution. Very happy with how the long grass was applied though, drilling a hole and pulling it partway through with some twine before soaking it in superglue forms an iron-hard (and watertight) bond.

It looks pretty swampy to me, but I’m guessing the water effects around the edges are a bit too “clean water” for what you want? Can you put some paint (or dirty paint water) into the water effects to change its appearance? (I’ve never used it.)

Mostly it was just too much, I think I built the terrain too high as well, have an idea how to address that. It also soaked into the grass I had laid down before, not exactly what I wanted. But I'll try once more.

Also, finished the Squat (minus armor chips and his visor, still debating with myself whether or not to add either):

This was a good lesson, both in how I can use Contrast paint and in how I will not do my Votann in that scheme. Doing it on 10-12 models feels doable and fun, but on 30-40 infantry and a few vehicles? It's just too fiddly to paint without me losing my sanity and joy along the way. Also, it does make them look like they work for the municipal waste disposal company of Vienna. Fine on Miners, kinda odd on Space Dwarf Mercenaries, in my opinion.

Blaze orange for greatest safety! P.S. the steampunk dwarves from AOS have some excellent bits and gubbins, I got a small set for a few bucks on ebay to use with my boys.

Still going, divided the remaining dudemens up into tiny groups.

Also spent a bit of money on an IKEA Skadis wall-thingie, and some more on having a bunch of paint holders printed to hold my Vallejo colors. I'd noticed I really hated having everything hidden away in drawers and having to spend a ton of time finding individual colors. The extra space for gimmicks like the paper towel holder and the boxes for bits is also nice.

Overall feeling very very tired these last days, too much weight of the world, too many friends being very gloomy about recent events on both sides of the ocean. Might withdraw from the internet for a few days to get away from all that. Or maybe hide behind my painting table, we'll see.
