One and all, welcome to my humble establishment, the Adventure’s Beginning.

I thought it would be good to have a thread where people can post any WHQ (any version) related images or chatter. If you have a mini that would look cool as a hero or painted up some monsters from the box game or thought of a cool idea for an adventuring party or want to drop memes of classic WHQ, here is a place to do it!

Does anyone know of some simple dungeon crawler rules that would make playing easier but still scratch the nostalgia itch?

Age of Fantasy Quest from one page rules?

Advanced Heroquest!

It actually predates Warhammer Quest and I always loved it. You might be able to find a PDF of it somewhere but eBay seems to have a few originals.

Great idea for a thread, Questing in all its strains is the best.

I’ve been running a few games with the wife and kids recently, an blend of WHQ with heroquest rules for all the combat, characters, and monsters. Latest game saw them descend into a night goblin lair to search for a lost courier (or more accurately, the heaving bag of gold the courier was given by the heroes’ patron).

It’s great fun to play with my kids and see them experience all the hokey old tricks and delve into the Warhammer world. They nearly burst with excitement when they were fighting pink horrors and they split into two blue horrors, it’s so easy to forget how wondrous these worlds can be to fresh eyes.

Where I am stopping at the moment there is a board for anyone to post stuff, so I asked if anyone would like to play some kind of miniatures game. But it case anyone responded I thought I should get some kind of minis ready. The problem is I have left them at home. Soooo… I used air hardening clay to make some dungeon crawler tokens…

Introducing the Rat King

His minions the rat men and the ordinary rats

And killing them all are the choice of 6 heroes

Who are from left to right the human Druid with joint, the gnome wizard trickster, the elf barbarian, the kungfu dwarf, the serious dwarf paladin and the tiny Halfling assassin.

I will later use the same clay to make dungeon tiles and paint it all up.

Here are the painted hero and monster tokens. I was planning to take it slower but got carried away. I will probably just make a quick set of rules as it’s probably not going to be taken too seriously considering how comical they all look, and someone who doesn’t care about the rules isn’t going to enjoy watching me pour through a pdf.

This is Grube und Gefahr. A game that I invented in the last 7days (with rules and sculpting and painting). I was originally planning a simple rpg but as I sculpted and got into it, it evolved into a cooperative comical parody of Golden Axe.

Sounds interesting (and looks awesome). How does it play?

Grube & Gefahr

Based in the town of Arcane Onslaught (Stadt Arkaner Ansturm)

Choose one of the Heroes

• Elf-Barbarian
• Gnome Arcane-Trickster
• Halfling Assassin
• Human Druid
• Dwarf Monk
• Dwarf Paladin

move 3 squares

to attack or shoot score a 5 or more on a D6 plus skill minus opposing skill.

Use your Characters’ talent by scoring 7 or more on a D6 plus Magic skill.

And the Monsters move using their own ‘flowchart’ and attack by the player rolling for Defense.

Place two chosen tiles down and when everyone who is still up has killed the monsters and moved to the second tile the first is removed and replaced by a new one on the second place.

Monsters arrive on a 1or 2 and the amount of monsters comes from an ever growing dice pool.

After 12 tiles it’s time for the boss fight.

I’ve also made character sheets, monster cards and tile cards. I have written an untested first draft, so naturally needs a lot of work before it’s finished.

Sounds pretty sweet. I like that the tiles cycle so you don't have to use a large play space and the way the way the difficulty ramps up closer to the boss. My favourite part though is the interesting character classes.

I had my first play test with a friend. It was such a good experience.

He was really excited about it. We worked around the problems together. Loads of positive feedback and specific constructive criticism.

And instead of being confused or dismissive my friend and the other friends who looked on congratulated me, which is also a good feeling.

And in the playtest my friend also commented that the tile system was a clever idea.

We played as the human druid (my friend) and the elf barbarian (me). The Druid was a good choice as he doubles as the ranger with a bow and as a close quarters guy but has to first cast magic to transform into a bear. So he was essentially test range, magic and melee in one go.

More of my dungeon crawler Grube & Gefahr.

I there a chance that I might not see this friend again so I decided to quickly knock out a paper and cardboard version as a gift for him. He is on the dense about getting back into RPGs and tabletop games so I hope that this will either scratch the itch or help him get back into it (without the big costs).

But now that I have them finished part of me wants to keep them. But at least I will have these photos.

That's awesome, what a cool gift. I know what you mean about that feeling when you create something awesome and give it away, but I've always found building community to be more rewarding than holding onto things.
