I think we’re all interested in each other’s hobby projects, but one hobby project we seldom get to see is the hobby space itself. And I absolutely love seeing them.

So why not share yours?

Whether you’ve got a dedicated workshop, a hobby room, a corner desk, a folding table, or a box that comes out after the kids have gone to bed, I’d love to see it.

Share some photos, some storage tips, and definitely any stories that go along with your setup.

If you don’t know where to start, don’t start by tidying the space. We love the chaos. Take a photo exactly as it is and tell us:

Here is my WARdrobe

called so because, surprise, it’s a wardrobe. I tried over a year in the new apartment to find the right place. With a young child space comes at a cost. There was one room but that was snatched up by my wife as an office. Eventually I made her agree to contain her hobby stuff to her office and I cleared out stuff that never made it out of the moving boxes and so I have this space in the corridor opposite the toilet. Not a luxurious location, but it’s home.

A shelf became worktop, situated at standing-up elbow height. I had plastic boxes on that head height shelf but I eventually wanted to not have boxes behind boxes. So I made them myself. The fronts are squares of left over floor boards with a boarder of plastic safety corners textured with paper maché and painted. Tea dyed rope through drill holes as handles. The inside is floor board bottom and got glued card sides and back. I love them because each has a different purpose and can fit on the workbench perfectly since they are made the same depth.

The wooden box at the top is house maintenance tools like drill, screw drivers etc. and chests for bulky stuff. The lastest addition is a couple little shelves for books and papers.

The height is for standing, which is an odd choose but I think is perfect for my situation. I can close the door and leave my current project lying there without needing to tidy up and know it will be safe. I often do 5 to 10 minutes between chores and childcare.

Next I want to fix those red tool wall boxes. I will probably sand them down and paint them as grim dark skips.

The overall look I am going for is castaway theme. It’s not there yet, but it will be a forever project anyway.

My hobby station actually folds up into this plain cabinet, which was useful now and then when we had younger relatives visiting.

I found it at a Salvation Army 15 - 20 years ago and knew right away I had to have it. The amount you can store in it is quite frankly incredible. I used to have a hobby room in the basement, but ever since we moved last time my hobby area is in the attic, which is also where the TV is, but we don't watch a lot of TV (I am fairly confident that I am the only one in the family that can turn on linear TV). It's placed right underneath a window which is facing west, so at times in the summer I need to hang something over it to not get the sun right in my eyes. (Maybe some curtains would be wise...) The paint shelves I designed and laser cut myself, but they're not that great to be honest.

Currently painting some ruined corners and assembling a Land Speeder (it's push-fit! very pleased!)

State of the Desk 25th June 2026

The desk is actually a bit too big to be practical, I keep cramming too many projects at once on it and stuff slips towards the back so it gets cluttered very easily. But my dad built it for me when I was a teenager, it's a big ole slab of glued strips of ash (?) wood with hardware store legs screwed on, and it's been with me for a good 30 years now, so I really can't replace it now can I?

It's also a good time to take a picture, as I'm about to transform it a bit. I'll get another one of those IKEA hole boards (is that what they're called in English? Lochplatte in German) 3d-print holders for my GW pots, and hang both boards a bit higher so I can build a cover for the desk. Why that? Well, Primecat almost died when she ate a plastic-covered paper clip in the year we got her, and her affinity for eating plastic has gotten worse, making it necessary for us to heavily fortify the factorium against the predations of or pet xenoform. At the same time, I don't want to lock her out of the room I paint in, so adjustments need to be made.
