Necromunda The Sump: General hobby venting thread (Beware: old men shouting at clouds)

I think the precedent here may be the recent Blood Bowl boxed games. If I remember correctly both Dungeon Bowl and the updated boxed game come with hardbacks. I'm hoping that also means the rulebook will be sold outside the box.
BB2016 came with 'boxed' rulebook, limited & cropped rules to cover only the basics included in the box. BB2020 included a full rulebook covering pretty much the entire game (at that point at least). That's a proper rulebook, similar to how kill team rulebook is or other games blessed with rulebooks covering the game instead of the boxed content.

I'm confident the Ash Wastes rulebook will be mostly limited to the boxed content, as all previous Necromunda rulebooks have (more or less):
  • N17 rulebook: Strictly boxed content (only Goliath & Escher, no campaign, no 3d terrain rules, different game system than the full game)
  • N18 rulebook: Full rulebook for the full game (separate from any box).
  • N19 rulebook: Mixed, most universal rules, otherwise covering rules for the boxed content only (for example no psychic power rules because there are no psychers in the box).
  • N21 rulebook: Mixed, most universal rules, also simplified rules for all house gangs (no campaign, no psychic power rules, no universal skill system, different game system than the full game).

Smaller board size equals terrible for vehicles much like how vehicles in 40k are a joke now. Example as a Guard player what's the point of a 72' battlecannon when you start 18 inches away from your opponent...zero maneuverability, zero tactical thought other than I place my vehicle down and well that's where it sits. Necromunda vehicles are smaller I get it yes but I don't have faith

Based on their inability to make actual scale vehicles (how many terminators are supposed to fit in this?!?!?) I could see Ash Waste vehicles being the same size as imperial guard battle tanks…

Re: amount of terrain: I don't mind it so much. It's not like starter boxes have ever had a real full complement of terrain and I do think it's a bit much to ask. Especially for Necromunda Necromunda, where I have my own terrain and don't want to pay for more I won't use. For Ash Wastes, still I'd rather make my own. I actually quite like how they've made some space up top while keeping small footprints, although there's zero chance anyone will ever ever walk on those walkways.

Special dice: I hate these. Minus exceptions like scatter dice, numbers are better. You can add and subtract, see. There's no possibility of including modifiers to the current injury dice, for example. No 'OOA on a 5+'. GW please stop it.

'Updated rules': Sigh. Whatever, I don't even play this game any more. Do your thing guys.

I’m intrigued if the rules are any good. Vehicles in Necromunda are a really cool concept
, really really cool, but in actual game play with heavy weapons not so much! We’ve tried various options at Tribemeets and it’s usually a quick route to a firey death!

Controversially I also like the buildings, it’s something a bit different. But yeah no one will want to use those walkways.

O'kay, I had a hunch that bringing vehicles into Necromunda would require trimming down terrain, but this is just a planet bowling. How in the world are you supposed to reach melee on this? On the ground level there are no ways to hide yourself and people can be easily shot off from the catwalks.

I'm also not happy that vehicles' rules require not one, not two, but three new types of special dice. We'll see if the core rules for them are any good, but after seeing the required number of new special dice I'm skeptical.

Based on that image of game play I would have to figure out my mega ash/sand pile terrain to have the setting make visual sense to me. Yes, I know that there are flat, rocky surfaces amidst the ”ash desert” but that image of spindle huts and wobble walkways over flat ground was so janky that I completely missed the vehicles.

Going to need some adobe/ashcrete buildings too. Not everyone is lucky enough to find rusted out hab blocks to shelter in.

One could theorize that having houses on stilts helps with heat regulation (your not RIGHT on the scorching sand and have some wind going below) and keeping pests out of the house. Like pests that try to eat you instead of your food reserves.

I pity anyone who runs into a Van Saar gang out in the wastes, expecially if they lean towards close combat. Wide open spaces, guys on hoverboards Stukka-ing your vehicles whilst you take unobstructed sniper fire from the other side of the table... o_O

Who thought it would be possible to dislike Van Saar more.....

How in the world are you supposed to reach melee on this?
Because it’ll probably include a load of “weather” rules where you have to pretend it’s a sand (ash) storm and no-one can see more than x inches*. Or you have to pretend it’s nighttime and you can’t see more than x inches*. Or you have to pretend it’s really bright and everyone has snow (Ash) blindness and you can only see x inches*. Exactly the sort of thing you’d expect in a TLoS game obviously!

*unless you all buy that fancy Wargear which negates it.

I couldn't help noticing "...a hardback rulebook containing updated core rules and brand new mechanics..."

Presumably the new mechanics are specific to Ash Wastes (e.g. vehicle rules) but the reference to updated core rules sounds like more tinkering with the basic system.
I’m expecting this Hardback Rulebook to be released separately soon after release and it’ll replace the 2018 one. I imagine it’s got all the rules in to play regular hive based games and then the new open Ash Wastes stuff with vehicles and mounts etc.

If so then I’d expect each new “area” they release (like sea, space) to slowly get added until by the end it’s a big book allowing you to play in any setting using any supplement.

Meh, they’ve probably nicked ideas from Doctor Who and the vehicles are bigger on the inside.

Also... don’t you dare mention tanks in Necromunda!! I’ve already heard of the Orlock Leman Russ, read about more Leman Russes in Book of Peril and heard about a town made out of rusting tanks!! Keep ‘em out I say!

“Click...” ha ha! Your gunner is out of ammo!

Next turn, new AW Tactics card arrives...

“Chug chug, splut...” ha ha! Your buggy has run out of Promethium!!

Not Necromunda related but still Sumpy..

It's really bad when GW can't even correctly identify thier own products. In the Sunday preview they identify one of the Aeldari fighters for Aeronautica Imperialis as the Nightshade Interceptor.

It's not.

It's a Crimson Hunter.

Well done Geedubs, well done. <Golf clap>

This is why Epic was always a great scale for tank battles! Actual manoeuvre and the weapon ranges come into their own, it did always feel a little bit out of place within 40k, and that's even before super heavies and titans and whatnot!

Scenarios will absolutely force it. You won't be able to get away from the death catwalks.

'Death catwalks' :LOL::LOL::LOL:
