Necromunda The Sump: General hobby venting thread (Beware: old men shouting at clouds)

“We have a new marketing strategy!”

“What’s that?”

“AMO. Actually Missing Out. It makes our products sooooo much more exclusive for the handful of YouTubers who are the only ones who can get them.

Oh and Barry. Barry gets 60 copies to drop on eBay “

It's crap like that which makes me want to start a dumpster fire of all my GW stuff. I've gotten so frustrated that I've put any projects related to GW - literally - on the shelf. I've spent the last couple weeks working on another games minis and will actually have a complete army by the end of next week (look for pics on FYSC)! I can't seem to do that with GW, I get stressed - which is ridiculous as it's a hobby - over trying to build forces because I'm worrying if the models I want will be available. This is nuts!

There is always the possibility to paint old models in your collection which don´t rely on GW´s bad release schedule.

I know it’s been said a lot before, but something feels different about this latest level of (much deserved) GW internet bashing, it might be the beginning of the end times.

Artificial scarcity, unusable websites, ridiculous pricing…. I just can’t imagine the kids staying interested and the grognards are spending elsewhere.

I wanted to like The Old World (it's a game I'd like to play) but my 40th birthday is coming this year and existential dread is setting in so their bullshit store isn't helping. As is I've got no idea if I'm getting my Squat Terminator and RT book anytime soon. Definitely can't see myself playing WHFB pretty much ever...

Wargame Exclusive have at last a Catachan chopper available and GW have been deaf about such a kit for years. So my next purchase will be from them:

And always remember guys: Charlie DON`T surf!

That’s a nice looking model, and makes much more sense on a game board than fighters and bombers. (Unless they’re an objective.)

They even have pilots on foot. Great for doing scenarios out of helicopter video games:

Pilots are in the mess hall and the enemy attacks the base. Then they have to leg it to their gunship while the bullets starts flying, get into the air and strike back.

Doubt it. TOW is making them crazy money. I think the thing to remember here is that most people on this site are not their target market.

The fact they had literal ques around the carpark at warhammer world the other week for the release... its clearly popular.

They have also been hitting scalpers by cancelling some orders of stuff on the TOW release where people were buying up like 10 copies of a thing to resell.

Honestly, I think they are doing a lot right at the moment, just not their website which is painful.

I don't believe it can continue for long. I think its a flash in the pan. A bunch of existing WHFB players will buy a bunch of old minis to finish armies, then it'll die really quickly. I may be wrong. I'd like to be wrong. I just don't see new players spending £100+ on multiple units of ancient metal minis.

I think at this stage I have to agree with Tiny. It’s much too early to speculate on whether it has long term appeal.

It’s just as probable that the Hype got bums off seats to purchase models they haven’t been able to get from GW in ten years. Plus a couple of new ones.

I’ve only seen bundles so far, no individual units so if it’s being sold that way it’s kinda expensive. Plus this isn’t like Necromunda where you could start with a reasonable starter set or one box of figures and two books; you’re going to need a whole army - which is presumably why they’re selling them in that fashion now but all that does is jack up the entry price.

So yes, they are making exceptionally good money off of this at the moment but mostly because the models are bare-minimum effort re-releases of very old stock and they’re feeding from a well of older players.

I would make a comparison to 40k but they’ve recently just reissued 4th Editions starter set models for £90. 🤣

I'm waiting on an empire army box so I have sufficient models and spares for some Mordheim warbands. The days of me contemplating a massive army are long gone, but skirmish level stuff with spares for when Old World crashes and burns making the models scarce again has a certain appeal.

You might be right, but I'm not sure it's a problem. I gather it's long been the case that new releases are the big sellers, while many older products hardly move anyway. And GW have been doing loads of limited runs and made to order products. So, as long as they make a decent profit in the short-term (which they ought to, given the limited new investment involved), I doubt they care whether this is sustained or not.

Unless you can the game for a decade and then offer a big bundle of the old models at new prices.

Then you can shift the older models. Apparently.

@spafe this video is worth a watch
I... don't really see anything ground breaking here. A company will fail at some point... tbh, that's kind of true of everything.

Will be interesting to see what the state of the company/game is at the end of 24.

Get to da chopper! Well, someone had to...

And don’t get me wrong, I know GW make massive amounts of money out of these things, I just wonder how long it can continue?

I'll just quote my comment on Adam Loper's video there -

Not defending GW here, just being realistic. There's chat about GW vs 3d printing, those who think it impacts on GW live in a myopic bubble. Having listened to Tom Hibbard (ex-GW product dev) talking about the "hobby trumpet", 3d printers are at the skinny end whilst GW aim at the fat end. GW aren't in direct competition, with let's say, Malifaux. High prices aren't a problem for 99.9% of GW's customers, they're very wealthy. They exist on short term buyers, and they're making £100+ million a year, they're nowhere near a tipping point...

Will The Old World collapse, again, who knows, it seems quite popular at the moment and it's not the first GW game to get a new edition, and then disappear again, Space Hulk anyone? Yeah I know, not quite the same. However if the "argument" is that GW are at a tipping point or might be soon, then I think y'all need to watch The Painting Phase's two videos with Tom Hibbard and you'll perhaps understand why they're not, for example some 10 years ago they were millions in debt and actually at risk of collapse, now they're making 100+ million profit year on year! These "they're going under because of [insert xyz]" videos and discussions are quite laughable, and generally come from a myopic uninformed minority who think GW operate like a "mom and pop store".

I'm usually bashing GW, aren't I, I know, right?
