Necromunda The Sump: General hobby venting thread (Beware: old men shouting at clouds)

Yeah it’s disgusting and weirdly late into the life of that miniature considering it’s been in a bundle set in various forms for a few years now.

Ironically he’s my least favourite of the Cultists of the Abyss - I would’ve preferred the other sprue with all of the others on to still be around!!

Saying that I preferred the old Chaos Psyker grabbing his head over the YMCA dude but Mr YMCA was given a full rerelease for Necromunda and a profile and a drawing!!

GW should just reissue the missing Abyss cultists for Necromunda.

The firebrand's cowl/armor thing is AoS level derpy for my tastes and he felt out of place next to his buddies. Still glad to have gotten him with his release box.

I have a hobby account only nothing linked to me or anybody I know as a person. Will opt out if I can but probably wouldn't have noticed it was happening if it wasn't brought up here

And the dark vengeance cultist's, all of them not just the handful they did do separate for a while
Annoyingly they did rerelease those a couple of years back - but you had to buy the rest of the DV plastics with them!!

Such nice models, it would be good if they could find a way of splitting them off into their own sprues.

As it is, they just have the molds from 2011/2 wherever it was they were milled for DV release and that’s it.

And once again GW runs out of everything that I was interested in on pre-order in minutes.

Not that I was going to BUY any of it, I was just interested.

How in the hell are you supposed to build a force and play a game if you can't get what you want? It's absolutely ridiculous. It makes me glad that I'm stepping away from GW as I don't have to deal with the frustration of trying to get what I want, when I want, without having to deal with "limited supply" and eBay scalpers.

Honestly it´s 2024 and other manufacturers are now able to make good models too. The idea is to get rid of the sentiment of collecting an army of an endless models and instead focussing on smaller projects which involve around 10-20 models. This way the hobby is actually quite cheap when you also build your terrain from scratch.

That’s one of the reasons I liked Necromunda back in the 90s - the model count was tiny compared to 40k or WFB.

Of course if you look back now and realise that the 2nd Ed 40k model count was tiny compared to 3rd onwards.

Modern Necromunda actually seems to encourage people to buy roughly 30 models for a Gang, just to use the base kit contents, the extra weapons and other equipment.

I thought I had a huge Cawdor collection in the 90s at 14 models!! 🤣

EDIT: I’ve long given up on the idea of having an army - it’s almost a pointless endeavour with modern GW due to availability issues, Codex creep and yes, the prices.

Plus I can’t be bothered to paint 300 hit counters, which is all they really are in the end.

Yeah, I've definitely done a paradigm shift in gaming. Moving to smaller independent producers with games requiring less space and fewer models. Also cheaper buy ins.

Heavy Gear, Frostgrave/Stargrave, Steel Rift, and Gaslands just to name a few favorites. I'm also going back to cheaper alternatives by scratch building my own terrain, I even had my wife make 3' x 3' mats for me out of fabric I got for $4.50 a yard at JoAnn's.

I'm really tired of paying the ridiculous prices the major manufacturers are charging, plus being stuck with a certain aesthetic. I'm really enjoying being creative again.

Oh crap.. I almost sound like I should be in the Spire instead with that last sentence. LoL

It’s been coming a long time but as someone who owns loads of the Empire and Rebel Armada ships and also bought heavily into Clone Wars wave 1, that only have half completed fleets, this is particularly shoddy business practice.

Not a surprise, unfortunately. X-wing, and Armada to a lesser extent, was a very good game when managed/produced by FFG. Asmodee's decision to put all of their miniature games in the hands of a company that had only fairly recently produced one game was going to be a death knell for some of the games. The very, very lukewarm reception to AMG's tenure of X-wing, 2.5 edition, and their complete lack of care about Armada, really showed that those two games were on the chopping block. AMG was focused on Marvel Crisis Protocol when they got X-wing, Legion, and Armada from FFG. They introduced Star Wars Shatterpoint, which is basically MCP in the SW universe, and kept up updates on Legion rules, but really never seemed to care about X-wing or Armada.

As a former X-wing player, I saw one of the main issues that foreshadowed the end was that 2nd edition had only been around for a couple of years before the game passed to AMG. FFG was in the process of re-releasing older ships from 1.0 to a new 2.0 standard, which meant giving them more pilot/upgrade options. This stopped when AMG got the game and they basically removed any remaining 1.0 ships from competitive play, annoying a lot of players who had a large collection of ships. The removal of the X-wing forums from FFG's excellent forum also had a major impact on the overall game- it was a great place for players to congregate and collaborate about the game. AMG did not have any sort of robust forum for its players, which lead to a splintering of the fanbase into 3rd-party social media sites (which had already been used, but the FFG forums were a main place for discussion about rules that had the ability for devs' to read/interact/inform players). For me, the writing was on the wall when AMG got the game- they were too small, didn't have enough experience, and already had their hands full with MCP doing fairly well, so they never had a chance to make X-wing or Armada work.

Eh.

X-wing appealed to me in concept, but the reality of the game, based on what I saw of YouTube batreps was nuclear level herohammmer. Everything seemed to be "my list is Obi-wan Kenobi in an A-Wing, and Chewbacca in an A-Wing, and Luke Skywalker on a..."

And the overuse of special/ unique characters has always been a huge turnoff in games for me, part of why I think I'm finding Bolt Action to be so appealling...

I played a fair bit of V.1 and I liked it. I recall there were cheaper generic pilot cards which I used a lot. Game was pretty good, but we found it a bit repetitive. I loved how good T.I.E interceptors were though!

I was heavily invested in X-Wing 1.0 but ditched my stuff when 2.0 came out. Loved the game but the changes they made plus basically having to buy multiple boxes of cards/tokens to update my collection was a definite, "WTF?! Did GW buy you guys?" moment.

A friend of mine got me into Armada, which I also love, but fortunately didn't get as deep into as X-Wing. Not sure what I'm going to do with it as all I have is Rebels so I can't do a game with someone who doesn't have the models.

I'm pretty sure that Legions is next on the chopping block. Oh well, I'm not into Legions (too many tokens to track, and the plastic they use for their minis is garbage) and I don't really like their two "flagship" games of Marvel Crisis Protocol and Star Wars: Shatterpoint. The 40mm scale is just an excuse to make people buy their terrain instead of being able to use what they already have. I've tried both games and neither appeal to me anyway.

I’ve heard of these two games (often very favourably) and looked into buying X-Wing (I think) a few years ago.

The little ships were cool but seemed very expensive for what is essentially a pre-painted thing. In the end no-one wanted to play so I didn’t.

Shame it sounds like they’ve died, I guess support was always going to end some day. I’m not sure you can 3D print your way out of it either as I gather it requires a lot of cards and stuff.

What annoy me is that there is not weapons only sprue for all the gang available in plastic if at all. Like where the power picks for the squats? On only one miniature while being available to every menber of the gang except the gearhead.

You can't even buy bitz from GW so if you want a gang with a lot of shotgun for example well it going to be costly.

Sometimes i feel that GW push us to the 3d printing solution.

I think, if you wanted to, it wouldn't be too hard to make fan-produced X-wing and Armada co tinuing content. There are a few good 3d party producers of X-wing/Armada tokens, so those are relatively easy to acquire (don't know if that will continue, but 3d printing for tokens is possible). 3d printed ship models are already a thing, I've seen plenty of people make their favorite SW Legends ships already. As far as cards go, there is a program called Strange Eons that is designed to make cards, from all sorts of games, that works fairly well.

Its entirely possible that now, with AMG killing off these two games, that we get some sort of community run/driven game experience.
