Burnt Umber Acrylic paint.
What the hell is going on there?
I can’t seem to find stockists for it recently.
I’ve been using one I picked up about 12-15 years ago but it recently turned to rubbery gel and became unusable. No worries, I’ll just pick up another tube from the local arts supply place.
My usual go to for cheap student grade artist acrylics is the discount shop here in the UK called “The Works”. However for some reason they’ve stopped stocking it (and sienna too) in their stores and the only stuff they do have is “online only”. WTF?!?
Tried two branches. No luck.
So today I went to the massive store called “The Range” which has a huge art section full of Windsor & Newton brushes, paints and mediums as well as Daler Rowney and a few others. Lovely…
…except… all its art stuff has mostly disappeared!!

Again WTF!! All the W&N has gone, paint ranges stripped right back to almost nothing and it’s mostly just crafting stuff left.
However… I did find one bottle - ONE - the one in the entire store - of Daler’s Burnt Umber Acrylic in there. It’s reasonably big so hoping it will last. Especially as I usually cut it with PVA and water for basing work.
Anyone else seen this phenomenon? Is there a materials shortage of Burnt Umber now? Can they not burn it anymore under Net Zero? Why is it so hard to find what used to be a pretty commonly found brown artists paint!!!
Of course this would be the go-to colour I’ve been using for my jungle basing to tint the herbs and on a few other basing projects too as it’s a lovely warm brown. Plus as you [could] get big tubes of it cheaply I thought it would be ideal for my scenery bases too.
Hopefully whatever this issues is resolves itself by the time my current bottle runs out.
