Vampire Wars: The Empire vs The Undead

Sorry, yes you can use them, but your save remains at 5+ for light armour and shield (in 6th for example), rather than increasing to 4+ for HW and shield combo. In 8th you miss the 6+ parry ward save, which was even more of a bonus to miss out on.

Given that one of my two main opponents will be high elves I’m thinking shields may actually be somewhat useful vs hundreds of bow shots and S3 spears. Not as good as for swordsmen but still useful for a unit that will mostly be there as a character bus.

I suppose the question to ask is whether you're better off with shields or with more bodies.

IIRC a spearman with light armour is 8 points (this may vary between editions though). So, you could have nine men without shields or eight with shields. Which is more survivable?

Against S3 or S4 attacks, the shield is an extra 1 in 6 save, so the eight with shields should be the better option. However, this doesn't account for all other variables, like getting an extra attack or rank bonus (I'm assuming you have more models anyway).

In 8th Ed they're 5 points a man with light armour plus 1 point for a shield.

By the numbers its better to have more bodies but also there's downsides to losing more models such as combat bonus, panic tests etc.

8th definitely favours big blocks. Shields are good if you get the parry ward save, but not so useful with spears. I'd suggest HW&S is better than spear and no shield, but I guess it depends a bit on the unit's purpose, e.g. whether you expect them to be in combat much or not.

I'll be playing a mix of editions most likely so not really building for effect per se. I'll probably only build 20-25 spearmen as that is plenty in other editions and they can act as a cheap character escort in 8th. Probably best to leave off the shields overall but not sure its as clear cut as first thought.

If you're going rule of cool, then I'd go with shields.

Alternatively, same as I said about spears vs halberds above, do some with and some without and put the correct ones in the front of the unit.

The Warlord Games Landsknechts I'm using for spearmen will look a bit odd with shields anyway so no biggy.

Are you using contrast paints for the base of everything? The split colors are looking real sharp

Thanks. Yes it’s all contrast aside from a highlight on the yellow and green, the silver and the bases. I’m doing the whole uniform yellow and then adding either red or green over the top which makes it a lot easier.

More Warhammer Blogs AMAZING... LOVE IT

Okay I can't not get involved in the edition discussion, I own and played all of them from 4rd-8th and I have a lot of feelings about it... If you want a old school hero hammer 5th is amazing, its so good for just powering up but its hard because you'd not have access to the magic expansion, same with 4th which actually had three magic expansions.

6th is where they tonned everything down and tried to make the game all about infantry however it's a bit bland though its closer to balanced than most other editions but that comes at a huge cost in enjoyment... 7th they stepped away from balance and power creep was a issue, now I saw skaven and Elves mentioned but 7th edition was broken on the back of daemons and Vampires, Vampires are so broken its painful, I would have been ashamed to use my Vampire army in that edition...

So we get to 8th and as @spafe states its a very different beast, some things I loved others I hated, but personally I like the fact you have the majority of the same magic items and spells to choose from for the armies with some racial flavour thrown in. I feel with some edits it could easily be the best edition.

Things I would suggest limiting the big spells for the 6 basic lores, the rest of the magic that came later was far more balanced but those core lores have a little too much kick. I'd also bring in that Ward Saves including those granted by magic resistence can work against all damaging spells, even if its a instant kill you should get your ward save.

I'd do something to bring back guess range on artillery, but that's a personal choice and being as I could give you a break down of a gaming table in cm its something I am a little biased about.

This next one is important, disruption needs to break steadfast. Its non debatable the fact that units of 100 skaven slaves are unbreakable due to steadfast even when flanked and lose there rank bonus is beyond silly. Fix this and you fix some of the biggest issues the game has in 8th.

I think 8th could have been so great, it really could but sadly GW wanted to level up everything too far, it had to be the biggest shinest most outrageous everything and thus the expansions just went too far, the magic just goes too far, steadfast goes too far and it took away from how much quality there was in the game... I will admit I prefer 7thh edition for movement and personally I'd fix that aspect as well, taking movement and charging back to 7th edition rules though I'd keep the strike order being initiative based and just keep the combat resolution and attack bonus to the charger but that's a bigger change but if done I think you'd have my perfect edition. I've played a lot of Warhammer and feel pretty confident on this analysis that this would create the most fun you can have as it was and its my wishlist for when/if fantasy returns.

As it happens I have copies of 4th ed Battle Magic and Arcane Magic along with 5th ed magic supplement so will definitely be trying one or more of those out. 6th ed interests me due to expansions like Warbands and 8th because who doesn’t love 50 halberdiers? So I’ll probably get through them all eventually. Only ever actually played 4th and a few games of 8th so definitely be interesting to get back into it.

I had so much fun with 4/5th but they don't have as full unit lists to work with which is my biggest gripe with them... Damn I'd love copies of those old magic sets, mine were lost years ago but I loved the magic expansions and expansion expansions, though I imagine it wasn't popular in terms of marketing but it allowed them to really go to town with those systems...
