Going to detail my journey painting my Newcromunda Van Saar plastic models up as Oldcromunda Van Saar here...

See this thread for my, short, journey of discovering what green GW probably used as a starting point on their metal Van Saar models back in the 90s- https://yaktribe.games/community/threads/original-van-saar-colours.9432/

I'm not the best painter in the world, I'm also not the best photographer in the world, especially as I don't have an expensive camera and studio, but this is where I'm at so far...

I spent an hour or so this morning putting down, using an airbrush, GW Caliban Green and Coat d'Arms Emerald Green, over a black undercoat that I did last week.

I have 1 other model that I've not photographed, my Heavy, because I'm still working on his weapon loadout. Will photo that model before I start painting him.

I haven't included the heads, they'll all get painted separately, and probably last.

All the arms are magnetised apart from the one on the female body (which also requires a right arm, it'll have a knife (that I've yet to source), so I can use her as a Juve), the guy missing his arms will get a Lasgun (see below), the plan with magnetising the arms is a) ease of storage and b) ease of upgrading/swapping weapons around -

This is my gang leader up close, the Plasma gun on his back is also magnetised. Should have taken a photo from the back, but basically I buried a magnet in the middle of his back and the middle of the Plasma gun. The Plasma gun is made from the front end from the box set, and the rifle stock from the seperate hand piece that is holding it (part 35), and because I destroyed the pistol grip when removing the hand I used a pistol grip from a Catachan flamer I had lying around, the chainsword is from an IG/AM Scion, and stuck on the hand/arm from the Shock Stave arm (part 33) -

I did a minor pose adjustment on this guy, to make it look like he's pulling his knife out of the sheath, I would give them all knives but GW have been tight fisted and only give you 2 in the box!!

I then spent the next 5-6 hours today painting the lovely lady below as a test piece.

I'm pants at doing faces, especially eyes, even with a magnification OptiVISOR type thing. Luckily you can't really see it in the photos. I would use the masked heads but I don't like them.

For the green I used 2 layers of zenithal highlighting over the base colour, with each layer being a mix of Coat d'Arms Emerald Green and GW Skarsnik Green then used pure Skarsnik Green for some edge highlights, I didn't edge highlight the whole model though, don't see the need to. The green then got a coat of GW Biel Tan Shade.

Highlights on the black were done with GW Dawnstone, then darkened with a wash of Nuln Oil. Metal parts are Leadbelcher, washed with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Runefang Steel.

The flesh started with Rakarth Flesh, washed with Reikland Flesh Shade, then "highlighted" with Kislev Flesh and a mix of Kislev Flesh and Screaming Skull. I used some Cadian Flesh to tidy up some areas. Obviously the eyes were painted (badly) white with a black "dot".

The flesh was then given a coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss, whilst the rest of the model got a coat of Pledge Floor Care (gloss varnish).

This is the "recipe" I'll use for all the models. It turned out better than I expected.

Sadly, and it's the case on all the models, I couldn't properly remove the mould lines.

If she looks a bit butch it's because she's got the arms from the guy in the photo above who's missing his...

Stuck a UK 2p in the next 2 photos for a size reference...

Showing the Lasgun business end where I put Tamiya Clear Red paint on it (I'll do this on all the Lasguns as it saves me having to go blind drilling them out) -

The face looks perfectly good to me. The pupils possibly need erasing just a touch underneath but they look fine really.

I can be never be completely sure I've gotten eyes right until I take photos to post here and see them close up. I'd get one of those magnifier thingies but I know I'd end up trying to fix every single blemish or wonky edge highlight and I'd never get anything finished.

He aint heavy...

Got my Heavy to a point where I can undercoat him. I want to add one more weapon option, so he can be holding a Plasma Gun, but I've run out of arms to do it with, and I might just do it with another body (but with the same leg pose) anyway as I'll be buying another box set as I have run out of arms for one of the gangers...

The good thing is, is that he's nicely balanced and will stand on his own feet.

Needs a little work doing on the right arm holding the Heavy Stubber, at the wrist, think I need to chop and reattach it. Looks a bit too long and ape like...

Comparison with the original metal model from the 90s.

Not much of a difference, but it is noticeable, and the head, to me, looks comically oversized on the metal model. The newer models somehow seem a bit bigger in places.

Same body, different gun...

I'm not too keen on the new Van Saar aesthetic when it comes to the weapons so I just kept the Plasma Cannon stock, as though they've stolen it from the IG or Marines and haven't fiddled with it yet. I need shoulder pads for this weapon option as I've run out of the men's. I would use the women's shoulder pads but they're slightly narrower...

This was a PITA to get positioned, and I think I still need to adjust the right arm as I broke it today and had to reattach it and I'm not sure I got the position right!

Pretty much finished painting some of the Gangers today, although I didn't do their eyes, I'll do them another day.

Not too keen on the way some of the arms look at the shoulder where I've put magnets in though, but they look OK from tabletop distance. Some of the heads don't seem to like fitting on very well either, might be because I'm not putting them on the specific neck GW tell you to use a specific head on...

Also I think the 2nd guy has a stache I've not painted!

Finally got these guys finished-ish. Still two to finish painting, but they're not in the gang as it is on my roster sheet. I haven't done any of their eyes, and I don't think I will, these are painted for tabletop not a Golden Daemon...

I feel they've turned out OK for my ability, but I'm a bit peeved at my inability to notice seam lines until it's too late to remove them without having to repaint everything...

I may go back and add some pouches, and bits, just to add a bit more detail at a later date, and of course they are all magnetised for when/if I upgrade/change their weapons. For example the two salty looking dudes with attitude with las pistols were juves, recently became gangers, so they'll get a lasgun each...

As a further nod to the 90s models I elected to paint the hair, 'staches, and goatees black on the models I painted this week.

First up, 3 more gangers -

My heavy, I haven't finished painting up his Plasma Cannon, and I tried to drill out the heavy stubber barrel but it started to go wrong so I stopped. He looks proper heavy due to the wider shoulders...

The leader, I changed him to this body as I think the pose looks better and he stands out a bit more due to the crate he's stepping on. I also tried some object source lighting on his Plasma Pistol, turned out OK but could have been better if my airbrush wasn't clogged... Still a couple of details to do (other than his eyes).

These are lovely bright 1995-esque models, some very fine converting and really nice adaptation of the heavy stubber. The faces are excellent.

I'm interested why you went with a devastator plasma cannon rather than the primaris plasma gun - both are huge, and comical, but the newer one is a bit sleeke.

I went with the devastator plasma cannon because of the backpack. And because it's a plasma cannon, not a plasma gun, or whatever the new Primaris one's are called. ;):)

Still need to get round to painting that, it's on my list of a 1000 things to do before...
