Going to detail my journey painting my Newcromunda Van Saar plastic models up as Oldcromunda Van Saar here...
See this thread for my, short, journey of discovering what green GW probably used as a starting point on their metal Van Saar models back in the 90s- https://yaktribe.games/community/threads/original-van-saar-colours.9432/
I'm not the best painter in the world, I'm also not the best photographer in the world, especially as I don't have an expensive camera and studio, but this is where I'm at so far...
I spent an hour or so this morning putting down, using an airbrush, GW Caliban Green and Coat d'Arms Emerald Green, over a black undercoat that I did last week.
I have 1 other model that I've not photographed, my Heavy, because I'm still working on his weapon loadout. Will photo that model before I start painting him.
I haven't included the heads, they'll all get painted separately, and probably last.
All the arms are magnetised apart from the one on the female body (which also requires a right arm, it'll have a knife (that I've yet to source), so I can use her as a Juve), the guy missing his arms will get a Lasgun (see below), the plan with magnetising the arms is a) ease of storage and b) ease of upgrading/swapping weapons around -
This is my gang leader up close, the Plasma gun on his back is also magnetised. Should have taken a photo from the back, but basically I buried a magnet in the middle of his back and the middle of the Plasma gun. The Plasma gun is made from the front end from the box set, and the rifle stock from the seperate hand piece that is holding it (part 35), and because I destroyed the pistol grip when removing the hand I used a pistol grip from a Catachan flamer I had lying around, the chainsword is from an IG/AM Scion, and stuck on the hand/arm from the Shock Stave arm (part 33) -
I did a minor pose adjustment on this guy, to make it look like he's pulling his knife out of the sheath, I would give them all knives but GW have been tight fisted and only give you 2 in the box!!
I then spent the next 5-6 hours today painting the lovely lady below as a test piece.
I'm pants at doing faces, especially eyes, even with a magnification OptiVISOR type thing. Luckily you can't really see it in the photos. I would use the masked heads but I don't like them.
For the green I used 2 layers of zenithal highlighting over the base colour, with each layer being a mix of Coat d'Arms Emerald Green and GW Skarsnik Green then used pure Skarsnik Green for some edge highlights, I didn't edge highlight the whole model though, don't see the need to. The green then got a coat of GW Biel Tan Shade.
Highlights on the black were done with GW Dawnstone, then darkened with a wash of Nuln Oil. Metal parts are Leadbelcher, washed with Nuln Oil, highlighted with Runefang Steel.
The flesh started with Rakarth Flesh, washed with Reikland Flesh Shade, then "highlighted" with Kislev Flesh and a mix of Kislev Flesh and Screaming Skull. I used some Cadian Flesh to tidy up some areas. Obviously the eyes were painted (badly) white with a black "dot".
The flesh was then given a coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss, whilst the rest of the model got a coat of Pledge Floor Care (gloss varnish).
This is the "recipe" I'll use for all the models. It turned out better than I expected.
Sadly, and it's the case on all the models, I couldn't properly remove the mould lines.
If she looks a bit butch it's because she's got the arms from the guy in the photo above who's missing his...
Stuck a UK 2p in the next 2 photos for a size reference...
Showing the Lasgun business end where I put Tamiya Clear Red paint on it (I'll do this on all the Lasguns as it saves me having to go blind drilling them out) -
