Anyone thinking of starting / transitioning any armies for Warhammer: The Old World?

Tell us your thoughts and share your progress here. Are there any armies or minis you're particularly excited to see?

I'm interested mostly because having official rules makes it easier to convince people to play with me. Also the idea of re-releasing old minis is amazing (Chaos Forsaken when?).

Armies look like they're going to be a bit smaller than 8th Ed fantasy so I'm currently contemplating selling my half-finished Empire army to start a different human faction. Perhaps fish themed, or perhaps something with a little more "ohh-la-la". I'll probably also re-base my AoS Nurgle army because I don't particularly like AoS.

The thought of re-basing 200+ night goblins hurts my feelings though.

YakDoug or my nephew (for those not familiar with Tribemeet tradition the odd non Yak we smuggle in is re born with a totally original Yak name….) is trying to persuade me to get into WHFB. This is his Undead Army.

If I do it I think I’d want to go for some kind of cavalry army with archers. For no other reason than I once beat YakDoug with a Mongolian Horde army in Medieval Total War whilst eating my tea in another room. Trolling is key.

I really loved the old 4th/5th edition WFB, but the teenaged Mr. M made the mistake of trying to build an Orc & Goblin army on what amounted to a lawn-mowing income... Needless to say, I eventually had to give up. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with this new Old World game, but am going to wait for more clarity about the army sizes before I commit - and even then, the low-model-count options will probably end up being my short list. That said, if they make amazing new models for Empire or Wood Elves, I might not be able to resist!

I still have my WoC army but, to be honest, I don't really have any interest in massed battle games any more. If I did, then I'd probably be playing Kings of War or Oathmark already. So, this will probably be a pass for me.

(Random thought: I should probably try to sell some of my OOP models, while they're still collector's items...)

I’ll give the game a look but have very little trust that it will be any good. I am worried that it will mean I can’t get games of 8th anymore as well, the new shiny always has a pull on people.

Getting access to old models is great but I have a feeling I will balk when I see the price, same as I do with the new ones!

I have way too many models to contemplate rebasing so will be sticking with old base standards. If someone gets funny about it I will just use upturned bases to increase size.

We’ll find out when the game arrives how precious they are about basing.

Fortunately sizes going up is pretty easy to solve, especially in rank and file as you could just make a movement tray to the correct dimensions and stand models on it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Warbases and the like produce ones designed to fit the upscale too.

The base size difference only really makes a difference if one player uses larger bases and the other uses smaller bases. If you're both sticking with old bases then it shouldn't make a difference.

I agree that it will affect the available pool of 6/8th edition players and why I'm usually against GW messing with old systems. Selfishly it won't negatively affect me as I don't have any opponents for any version at the moment.

So who cracked then?

I was pretty adamant I wasn’t going to get involved but got whipped into a last minute frenzy when a pal said they were going all in and I’ve ended up with both army boxes… I sold out every personal principle I possess for plastic toys, and I love it!

I’ve not followed much of the build up as I didn’t think I’d have a it one to play it with, but catching up the rules seem pretty good. The basing shenanigans and redundancy of some models is a grind but I’m just gonna get over that as all my fantasy models were going unused, so I’m gonna embrace it.

I cracked months ago, printed a bunch of Orcs and now can't bring myself to touch them.
Try this trick:

Put all the orcs away into a drawer. Retrieve ten of them for painting duties. Give yourself X amount of time to finish them. Rinse and repeat until they are all done. It worked for my 40K Iron Hands which I started in June 2022 but they are still not finished. Batch painting is the horror that´s why taking your time is important.

I don´t let myself getting distracted by OW. Legions Imperialis & 30K/40K SM are on my radar now as painting projects. If I want to do a R&F game then 9th Age or Hobgoblin (free beta rules document) is a good alternative. It doesn´t cost me any money at all and I still have right now two fully painted armies available (Lahmian Undead & Nurgle CW).

While I had looked at some of the WarCom articles prior to release, I hadn't even looked at the (pre) release. I don't need to pay GW prices for old (mostly ugly) models when there are many better alternatives out there.

I'm not going to bite. Any r&f games will either be whfb 6th-8th or OPR. And since my Vampire Counts aren't even represented, and seeing how gw is handling the books, I'm not even tempted anymore. I will enjoy bat-reps on various channels, though! So looking forward to that :giggle: And now I'm also looking forward to seeing you guys' painted armies in all their glory!

The only fantasy models I’ll be picking up will be for stuff like the Realm of Chaos Path to Glory or maybe D&D characters for my kid. I had multiple armies across multiple editions of WFB and played one single game. Sold it all off.

Just had a look at the pre-orders and the only thing I like is the turquoise book cover unfortunately. (Theres not a lot I can say without going full sump.)
Think I’ll play it safe and stick with Oathmark, even if it means never getting a game, at least I’ll still have me kidneys!
well....at least one of em...adeptus bloody titanicus *grumble grumble*

I’ve already signed up for an event in February, looking at some of the previews it looks good. From what I can tell a lot of the more annoying bits form 8th are gone (like steadfast) and it seems to play like an updated 6th.

Plus I already have a mostly painted empire army so it won’t cost me much to get into.

Passively working on a High Elf army worthy of Saphery, so wizards and Swordmasters are definitely going to be present. Already managed to snag the relevant half of an Island of Blood set in a trade even, though I can't say I'm in an absolute rush to get everything I need to pad out to 2000pts of take-all-comers with the theme.
