Warp Space Without the Sub-Species Human Navigators

On page 131 of WH40K Rogue Trader 1987, the section on warp drives says that they have their own navigational units which are able to make jumps of up to 4 light years. This section does not mention the navigators, so I am assuming that small jumps like this can be undertaken without navigators.

I think this because other races travel the warp without the benefits of human navigators. Does anyone have a different take on this?

Now all I can think about is the Dr. Who Episode "The Girl in the Fireplace" and the ship "SS Madame De Pompadour" jury-rigged control units.

Yeah the Warp Drive predates the Navigator gene. Going deeper into the warp allows you to go further and faster but you are more removed from the material plane and therefore you need a navigator (and a stronger Geller Field).

That fits. One can assume that we found the warp first and than, by accident or design or outside manipulation, the navigator gene appeared in some human stock.
