Look at the effort younger you went into, stripes on the chainsword, gem's picked out. I bet you only had a citadel standard brush to work with. Top effort I bet younger you was proud of that, plus the power-fist chainsword combo in 2nd edition was pretty OP on a SM Captain
Nice, I'd be happy with them todayAlas the Trolls early years have been lost to time, I started collecting with MB’s Heroquest and Space Crusade in the very early 90’s, then collected a Space Marine Salamander Army using Beakies, An Imperial Guard Army and then moved on to Necromunda.
For the Beakies my then brother in law gave me his very well painted for the time Ultramarines. The young Troll then decided to over paint them with one thick coat of green paint….the ex brother in laws face was a picture
Anything before the Guard was given to my nephews when I lost interest for a few years due to the normal reasons. A lot of it then died when one of them went through a Sid from Toy Story phase the little w@nker! I picked through the debris when they in turn moved on and found some old model gems, but nothing of mine seems to have survived!!
I’ve still got the Imperial Guard Army in the family strong box, but I’d got better at painting by then. These two Catachans still live in my figure case. Only the bases have been changed from the original Goblin green to grey a bit later when they did a new duty as Necro Gangers. But I’d guess they were painted in 1994? 30 years ago nearly!

but I was proud of using a green wash over yellow to create what I felt at the time was a cool dragon green effect.
Which is essentially the concept behind the entire line of Contrast Paints. Clearly you were ahead of your time.

My Ral Partha minis for D&D are long gone. For 40K I sold my RT Imperial Guard army as. WFB figures I gave to a friend's kids.

It is a Rogue Trader Era space pirate, modified with 1990-ish modeling clay, and a 1989 space marine backpack that has been cut up and reconfigured.

Found one of my original models I did way back in the 90's... If I remember correctly, I repainted the body so he would fit in my Chaos army as a cultist haha

Love this thread — here’s mine: the very first mini I painted, a Gretchin from the 2nd-edition Warhammer 40k box my wife gifted me in 1996. Thick old-school coats, visible brushstrokes, and all the nostalgic charm. It’s on a textured gravel base.
The very first things I ever painted was the Hero Quest set using a mix of cheap acrylics I got from somewhere and some oil paints I had gotten to paint Humbrol aircraft kits. The game launched in Norway in 1991 and I probably got it not too long after that, so this is closing on 35 years ago. As you can see, painting eyes or teeth on normal minis was several years off in the future. That being said, I don't think the elf turned out that bad. I think I still have most parts of this game.
Fun fact: my first foray into terrain making was crafting extra dungeon furniture and traps for this game.

This Space Marine I painted when I was... maybe nine? Ten? I was younger than fifteen at least. It was at a local expo where one of the game stores had a demo painting table - I remember being annoyed at not being able to paint the inside of the chest where he held his gun, and the instructor insisting he should be blue with yellow or white trim.
And this orc I painted two years after, same expo but with new models. I remember thinking orcs were lame compared to the space guy but this time I got to play a bit! It went poorly.
The first ones I painted as an adult I don't have around anymore as I think I stripped and re-painted them like two or three times at the start.

I'm seizing the opportunity to somebody else's "We all started somewhere" - my youngest son (5) did these whilst I was working on an Inquisitor model.
Captain RedLegs in the middle, Black Evil left and Nitro Knight on the right. Flamey Gun at the back was done at Warhammer World with a bit of assistance with trim etc.
