Drip

Drip

The sound of dripping water brought her back to the waking world. The throbbing in her head, and most of her joints reminded her, that she was still on this side of death. Her body screamed at her in the white noise of pain, when she tried to move. It was only then she realized she had an IV drip.
"You awake Major?" A soft, but grizzled voice came from the darkness to her left.
Major Eva, aka Red Eva of the Necromundian 105 regiment, let out a breath of relief, such as one does when you know you are amongst the most accepting of friends. "Yeah Grace, I'm awake," she tried for a moment to remember how she ended up in a medical bed. "What in the name of the Emperor happened."
Grace stood up, well as much as the eight foot ceilings would allow her 9'2" frame to do so, and walked over. "We was set up Major," she replied, "not sure who, how, or why, but someone wanted us to burn."
Eva was surprised by the anger in her gunner. Grace had received a set of tomes, of self discipline, and the holy word of the Emperor, durring their first tour on Armageddon, from an Adepta Sororitas squad leader. After she had eradicated a writhing sea of Orks, whom had the Battle sisters pinned down. "Easy now," those thick boltgun metal bound volumes never left Grace's side, as she read them, and found peace. "Just tell me what happened."
Grace looked at her, "They was waiting for us. Who ever they was. I mean, we were strolling down the road. Spyer's to the kill, and celebrating, when the Inquisitor, vanished, and all hell broke loose."

. . . To be continued.

Sarah walked in to the room, peevish as ever. "You know Sgt Major, if you could just frag off and die!" Her words were venomous, but sweet at the same time, "that would be great. M'kay"

Grace just shook her head, as Eva chuckled. "Good to see you too Doc," she said as she regarded her childhood friend, "what's got your goat this time, old friend?"

"Well between you being unconscious, Grace being a big baby about losing the power pack to her Plasma Cannon, and Agnes," she retorted, pausing angerily for a moment, "well being Agnes. I'd rather slip back in to that case of Rat skin viper hooch, you all dragged me out of."

Grace chuckled a bit, as Eva sat up and looked over the notes her and grace were going over. "You have any idea what happened?"

"You were either ambushed by the hives greatest ratskin gang, or you were setup. Considering there were no ratskins, this time, I would bet on the latter," Sarah remarked, while checking Eva's vitals.

"Fair enough," Eva responded. "What about Agnes, Gozen, and Fredia? Are they all ok?"

To be continued. . . . .

have you read any of the gaunts ghosts books? I think judging by your writing style, you'd really like them

As if summoned by their names, three women waltzed through the portal. Oddly, one was wearing polarized goggles, a full respirator, and full form fitting body suit. Black as black could be, one might say it sucked the light away. Contrasting to her suit was her combat jacket. "Agnes," Eva surveyed the youngling, "thank god! I was worried about you."

A woman wearing a cracked skull kubki mask, turned sharply and stared at the major, "worry about the child do you, but not your seasoned warriors?" Her accented voice, carved the air, "Killed, we all could be, but the chi. . "

Her words were cut short as the 'child' grabbed her loose sword strap, yanked her backwards, and threw her on the floor in a heap. "You condescending BITCH!" The girl responded, "Who the f**k do you think saved your worthless ass, Gozen. Your ghosts? Your clan? Your fucking mystic prayers?!"
Gozen was on her feet both power swords drawn. The air crackled with the energy of the swords, and the glowing ice blue of Gozen's eyes. "A child you are, no matter how you could be so strong!" Her words spat between clenched teeth, "I will have my honor you pampered bra. . . "
And once again Gozen's words were cut off as Grace stood up and stepped between the two of them. When someone who stands as tall as she does, stares at you while holding a charging Plasma Cannon off a Leman Russ tank, you tend to shut up, and pray she forgives you. "You done?"
The question just hung there for a moment until Gozen powered down and sheathed her blades. Snapping to attention, "Apologies, Grace," then quickly turning to Agnes, "Apologies Agnes. My words were hot, and my temper unfounded. Shame me you did not, shame my self I did," Gozen hung her head in shame.

Agnes walked over to Gozen, "If I was saved by someone ten years my junior, I'd be pissed too. Especially when the Sergeant Major states a concern for only me," her face now regarding Eva, while patting Gozen on the shoulder.

"If we are all done acting like drugged up Goliaths for the moment? Might I bring forth some decorum?" The shotgun, dual las pistol, and heavily covered in grenades woman piped up.

Eva looked at the ragtag unit that had survived the barrens, hives, extraction, and court-martial after Armageddon. She was annoyed with everyone of them, but too happy that they were all alive to care. "Certainly Fredia. What's on your mind?"

. . . .to be continued . . Maybe next week.

"Why you looking for a bunch of no good deserters, way down here?" M'rk as the hooded stranger. "We ain't seen much backbone round here!"

The stranger looked around the sump settlement from this sentry post. His cybernetic eye clicking back and forth. "I seek that which the Emperor advised. Through his eyes we are all judged and found wanting," he reached out with lightning reflexes, catching M'rk by the throat, "no honest citizen of the Emperor, would question a imperial seeker."

To his credit M'rk did try to struggle. His last visions of life was the red glow of the strangers cybernetic eye, and a fleeting glimpse of the symbol of the inquisition. After a loud snap, the world faded before him. The last sound he heard was the strangers voice, "his will be done!"

"So, we took a job with the Inquisition," Fredia was explaining, "and durring that job, not only did we lose the artifact the Inquisitor wanted. We were also framed, in such a way that it looked like either we took it, or know those who did."
Eva looked at the shortest member of the unit, "Your point, if you in fact have one?"
Sarah lifted the stethoscope, and started to remove the medical readouts. "Her point Sergeant Major, is we have been sitting ducks for the last week while you have been recovering,"
"A WEEK!" Eva retorted. Now frantically pulling the leads of the equipment off of her. "What the hell! We are lucky they haven't fou. . . " But the word died on her tongue. As the distant sound of screaming, amassed with munitions fire broke the silence of downtime.
The squad tensed as one, awaiting orders. Which were quickly dispatched. "Sarah get me some fucking clothes! Grace, and Agnes get topside and ensure we are ready. Gozen, and Fredia, grab the gear, and get us mobile."
Each member moved the second the order was out of Eva's mouth. They knew when the fires of the very agents of the Emperor, were hunting you down. You did not mess around. They moved so quickly that Eva was dressing as the last order was vented.
Shit, shit, shit! Eva's mind raced. She grabbed her side arm, and followed Sarah out of the room. She was hardly surprised to see it was an old shipping container, repurposed, in combination with others as domeciles. She had hoped no one had been put out for her carless mistake a week earlier.
"CONTACTS!" Grace roared, pointing at a catwalk some five hundred meters away. There blueish black armor gave them away as the local adeptus arbites. Nothing much more than authority licking toadies, and based on their unit cohesion, poorly trained ones at that. "Permission to engage boss?"
Then He was there. An operative of an Inquisitor. His presence made the arbites give him wide berth, although she doubted he would have noticed plowing over them.
The arbites seemed to be at an advantage, but something told Eva that her squad was three steps ahead. "Fredia, you preped the area day one?"
Fredia's stocky little frame popped out from around a corner, with a grin, and a sparkel in her eyes. Everyone knew no good could possibly come of it. "Why, yes Sergeant Major. Standard backup, explosive ordnance at various key structural locations. On dead switch, and motion sensor options," her giddyness was cut short by the first crack of a shotgun. " 'Ey! Ya Daf't bastards! Don't cha be knowing we be well out of ya range!" She taunted the Arbites.
"Grace." Eva responded to the amazon, "give them a warning."
"With pleasure," and with that the walkway the arbites were stalking towards, was bathed in the bright florescent blue of a heavy Plasma Canon. Now arbites are familiar with plasma fire, but when the size of said salvo melts a hole through a metal walkway the size of anyone of them. Well that tends to make people stop and re-evaluate the situation.
The operative, on the other hand, just watched the local enforcement faltering. Eva caught his gaze as he grabbed the closest one and picked them up. It was a gaze she remembered, and would always remember. Her blood chilled instantly, and she knew that the arbites knew not whom they delt with, but she did. "GRACE! AGNES! WE ARE LEAVING. NOW!"
The two women looked at each other, and then turned back to watch the arbite being held by the operative burst into bright blue flames. His gurgling screams echoed through the night, as they spin on their heels and bolted to the rally point.
"You will not escape his will!" The operative bellowed.
Gozen poped out from around a corner close to ght rally point, "over here! We got transportation!"
Everyone booked it to where Gozen was. Once they got round the corner, they saw the old monotrain. Barreling into it, Sarah spoke up, "You and your freaking love of the Rails. "
"What?" Gozen shrugged.
"I just be hoping this one be better than the one you almost ended us all in, back on Armageddon!" Fredia spat. "Here ya go 'va," handing Eva a control tablet.
Eva wasted no time at all selecting arm all. Watching the network of devices blink on was breathtaking. Realizing that Fredia had rigged enough explosives to level a tank squad, was a bit terrifying. "Holy shit Fredia!"
"What?" She responded, "its not like we want ta be followed? Now is it?"
"Gozen! Get us gone", Eva yelled, as she set the dead switch to one minute.
The monotrain roared to live, and bolted out along its tube. The explosions started going off, shortly thereafter.
