What I've been doing recently, a painting and modelling log...

It's always great to see some Mordheim action! How did your witch hunters fare? I hope they did well... especially since the battle was fought in the cathedral district!

Well, my regular gaming buddy has chosen to be Dwarf Treasure Hunters. He's got a warband of 6 currently. Despite having 3 Witch Hunters go OA I won the battle, but in the after action sequence I lost a Witch Hunter to snake eyes and another drank from a well and now has Delhi belly, so I'm down to 6 guys also for the next game. Whilst my gaming buddy's Dwarves ended up with 4 OA they didn't suffer any ill effects...

BTW anyone know what page the rules for hiding are on? I've seen hiding, or being hidden, mentioned twice in the rules book, I've cut out the tokens, but we couldn't find the specific rule yesterday!

In the pdf found here on the tribe, page 11 has a section called Hiding. I'm guessing that'd be it, and page number should correspond with your hard copy I think.

Thanks, found it. It's on the same page as terrain types, charging more than one opponent and climbing. We read that page yesterday! Doh!

That's actually page 25 of my hard copy because I printed and bound the full version from Broheim.

The Steel Legion grows...

I bought a Sentinel from Wayland Games on Thursday, and it arrived on Saturday (would have been Friday but I wasn't at home). And I spent a couple of hours today putting it together.

Apologies for the blur on some of these photos...

The weaponry is all magnetised, although I need to work out a place to glue the Hunter Killer Missile rail (the missile itself is magentised to the rail), because I don't like GW's placement of it -

How I would arm it -

IMG-20220118-154907321-HDR.jpg

The weapons (and that bit on the top) I'd use taken off the vehicle -
IMG-20220118-154928850-HDR.jpg

The two roofs are interchangeable, so I can run armoured or scout -
IMG-20220118-154949225-HDR.jpg

The scout rollbar roof is attached to the same magnets at the back of the cab as the armoured roof, but it's a bit of a loose fit -
IMG-20220118-155013717-HDR.jpg

The driver, I have a plan for making a Steel Legion head -
IMG-20220118-154844993-HDR.jpg

And the driver just plonked into the cab, I can't have him in there with the armoured roof attached though -

Still some filling, scraping and sanding to do. It's not glued to the base at this stage.

I started out assembling the legs, so that they were still poseable, but it quickly became clear, that despite GW intending them to be poseable, you have to glue them in position or the vehicle just constantly topples over. So, I glued them in a position that works (just about) without gluing to a base...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Mother had her heart op on Friday, and is back on the ward recovering.

So, I pushed on with the Steel Legion Sentinel, and it's now painted.

Note to self - texture and shade wash a base well in advance of final assembly...

Unfortunately the driver is a Cadian. I played around with trying to mold/cast a head from my Steel Legion infantry squad, but that failed, several times, so I gave up. The only other option would have been to cut off a head and the gas mask hose, but then I'd have to by another trooper at something like £9 to £10 - half the cost of the squad!!

I've also lost the "ammo box" thing on the rear portion of the weapon side for the Lascannon, so it shares the one for the Multilaser. It pinged off my tweezers during painting, despite being magnetised, and was never to be seen again!

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Fantastic work on the sentinel! Very nice painting - the weathering/shading really came out well and the few bright red details really make the model shine.

These are not my best, and I feel these aren't GW's best moulded plastics either, is all I'll say about these.

Anyway that's my Mordheim starter warband done.

So, mother came home from hospital on Tuesday evening, about 10 days since having her heart op (double bypass), and I'm now her "carer"/"supervision" during the day (we only get professional carers first thing AM and last thing PM) for the foreseeable (hopefully not too long).

This means that I've not had much spare time to do, or any where I've felt like doing, any hobby stuff this past couple of days and may not have much going forwards (although I'm hoping I can get a good couple of blocks over the weekend).

However I did get a couple of hours "free" today, so I made a start on Kurt Helborg.

I'm working from grainy/blurry old GW photo references, that I've enlarged in photochop, as that's all I can find of GW examples. I have one of the 4th edition version and one of the early 6th edition repaint before they released the, new at the time sculpt, finecast version.

4th edition -
White-Dwarf-154-53.jpg

Early 6th edition -
Helborg.jpg

So that's the two images I'm working from. I'm kind of doing a mix of the two colour schemes. Looking at them it would seem the early 6th edition version is slightly different in detail or maybe it's just how it's painted, angle in the photos, lighting etc. (?)

Here's my efforts so far -

I've just blocked in colours for the moment, although I may leave the skin on his face as it is. I've used Contrast Paint for some colours, but I'll probably go back in with some layering, particularly on the blue.

The horse shaped object will be a white charger with black armour (hence why it's painted as it is currently), I'll try adding goldy-looking trim lines around the edges of the armour like the 4th edition version, and I will try to make some decals to look like the scrolls, wreaths, skulls and lettering on the horse's armour (no way I'm good enough to hand paint them on)...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Thanks Mr M. Mother is sleeping a lot at the moment (apparently that's usual for major op patients in recovery) so it's freeing me up a little (although I still don't feel I can go out properly, I can maybe leave her on her own for 1hr at the most if I need to), and as I can't do much else I pushed on with Kurt Helborg over the weekend and finished him up last night.

Not happy with the gold (I never am, just can't seem to find that "trick" to doing good gold, despite attempts and research). The horse shaped object isn't all that great either, and my photochop skills aren't good enough to make good enough looking decals to put on the horse shaped object to represent the hand painted scrolls, wreaths and skulls, GW did on their example. My freehand skills are even worse, so I did what I could on the horse shaped object...

His armour was done using Vallejo metal colors but I made the error of putting it down over the Citadel Wraithbone undercoat. I should have gone over that undercoat with gloss black, as the shine/coverage of the Vallejo metal colors looks a bit weird to me, almost as though I have white showing through in places.

Other than that I'm happy with how he turned out, he'll look OK in the unit of Reiksguard I have - I might take a photo or two of him and the unit together at a later time/date.

Need to buy some more "stuff" for my Empire "army" now...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

So, whilst I ruminate, cogitate, calculate and debate buying and starting an entry to the current Yakcomp (3 squigs and 2 Gobbo herders), I have another "project" in mind...

I want to collect some (not all) "monster" miniatures for Warhammer Quest '95 as I only have the basic core set, with 4 Reaper Miniatures substitutes for the minotaurs, plus a mummy and a skeleton. As several of them are special one off's from the two expansions, Lair of the Orc Lord and Catacombs of Terror, I've decided to see if I can obtain any of them, or suitable alternatives, before I buy the more stock monsters, like black orcs (currently Ardboyz in GW speak), skeletons, ghouls, zombies etc.

One of the hardest one's to come by seems to be the Dread King from CoT. This is the GW original model -

gw-wq3-3.jpg

I was browsing Reaper's catalogue the other day, man do they have some weird random stuff, yeah I know, it's all mostly for D&D, AD&D and Pathfinder, any how I stumbled across a miniature that I think will be a suitable alternative...

...So I bought it the other day and it arrived today. I set about assembling it this afternoon.

He's called Dragoth the Defiler, Undead Lord on Throne.

There's actually another 2 versions of him, by the same sculptor, also on a throne and one on foot, but I prefer this one. This one also comes in Reaper's cheaper Bones range, but I don't like the quality, or lack of, of the Bones models I've purchased so far, so I went for the metal Dark Heaven Legends version.

Some quick mobile photos below, sorry I forgot to crop them in photochop to "zoom them in" a bit more...

In it's blister pack -

IMG-20220209-144835433-HDR.jpg

May require assembly. Yeah, no sh. -

IMG-20220209-144852845-HDR.jpg

The parts -

Not entirely sure what she's meant to be, but I won't be using her (not keen on the model) -

IMG-20220209-145125920-HDR.jpg

After some clean up of a couple of bits of flash and some CA glue -

IMG-20220209-150720962-HDR.jpg

IMG-20220209-150749433-HDR.jpg

Whilst the CA glue set, I added some Baking Soda for a bit of bulk to the joins inside the throne, and it accelerates the CA glue setting time -

img-20220209-151028635-hdr-jpg.jpg

I'm not keen on how he sits on the throne, I think there's some flash on his foot still, and I need to adjust the sword arm. Or as he's loose I just haven't positioned him correctly (most likely having just inspected Reaper's example images). I also think my superglue has gone off as it's not quite worked all that well on the head and sword arm's joins, so I may take those off, and perhaps pin them, and re-glue them when I get new CA glue.

There's also some gaps that I think may need filling, but my Green Stuff appears to have gone off also, and I don't really have any suitable filler, I could try baking soda+CA glue but it has a tendency to go all over the place for me, so I'd rather try something a bit more controllable. I might try my Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty, perhaps it will just sit in the gaps...

Not really close to GW's original, but he'll do. He has multiple heads, one of which is a skull, I may use that instead of the helmeted version, or pin it so I can use all 4 heads...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Getting large metal miniatures to sit right (or even assemble securely) is a real art form. It's a very cool and evocative mini - reminds me of that old Conan story "The Thing in the Crypt." I checked out the pictures of it on Reaper's website, and it looks like there will be some very difficult parts to reach with the paintbrush. Looking forward to see how you tackle it!

Pins are good for that. One in the seat of the chair that goes right up his, um, backside. Paint everything then glue the mini to the chair using the pin.

Don't suppose you could point those problem areas out to me, I'm looking at the images and it all looks straightforward to get the brush in?

@Punktaku - yeah I'll probably pin him on to the throne, I was thinking about that before you posted last night and I was considering putting one in both feet and his backside. Depends on if I can line the holes up though. Traditionally I don't do too well at that...

Old “how to hobby” guides used to say to put the pin in one part , and then put a dab of paint on the tip of the pin and position the parts together while the paint is wet. This will leave a point of paint on the other piece so you know where to drill the other hole.

Well, if you paint the guy and the throne separately, I think (like Punktaku said) it should be pretty easy to access everywhere. Looking at the picture of the assembled mini though, if you glued it all together first I think it would be hard to paint the cloth that's on the seat of the throne, and some parts of the guy's legs.
