What I've been doing recently, a painting and modelling log...

That green knight you have looks like a very nice alternative to the GW version. There's loads of room for free hand painting too if you felt so inclined, although its a major chore, often fraught with a great deal of frustration.

Spent an hour or so at the table today doing some Mordheim table/buildings stuff, no game as yet, "stuff" keeps getting in the way...

I started out with painting the second stone bridge, and then added filler to the gaps between the "bricks" on the arch, just a satin varnish layer and the clay wash to do -

IMG-20230523-164249723.jpg

IMG-20230523-164301168.jpg

I then proceed to cobble together the first of two platforms for use on the table -

IMG-20230523-161020363.jpg

It's not square, it's roughly 20x16 inches. I had a plan of sinking the top surface into the space made by the walls, so that it was all flush, but it became clear that wasn't going to work well, if at all, so I just plonked the top surface on top of the walls...

The top surface is made from the 5mm XPS foam laminate floor underlay sheets I bought, I'm not entirely convinced they're particularly useful for modelling purposes as they're not quite as stiff as the 5mm XPS sheets I've been buying from modelling suppliers and they feel a little spongy.

You may or may not be able to make out that there is a cobblestone pattern on the top surface of the platform, despite using a Green Stuff World roller it wasn't easy to get the pattern down and there's a few "tram lines" as well. Hopefully the pattern is embossed enough to take paint and a clay wash...

The four sides of the platform are made from pre-textured 10mm thick XPS foam bought from an etsy seller. It's all held together with hot glue and as you can see I've put some bracing under the top surface, although it still flexes a bit when pressed down, but I can't see that much weight being put on it...

Not sure how long that platform will stay together, or how it will take being transported on public transport, but we'll see. It's rough and ready but I'm not making a display table so it'll do, I'll put some mod podge on it and paint it in the next few days, hopefully...

The second platform I have planned will get made once I've finished the first, as I can't really have two lying around the "work area" (dining room table) at once.

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Spent a little while at the table today, or more like the chest freezer next to the table as that's the only place large enough to put the platform section for Modheim...

...not as long as I thought I was going to spend though...

I placed the platform upside down on some recycling bags, simply so I had something to grab hold of to manipulate the sides as I put Mod Podge on them and so I didn't get said Mod Podge on the freezer top -
IMG-20230524-135459888.jpg

I left it in the above state for about an hour to dry a bit, then came back and put Mod Podge on the top surface, the foam brush I was using had water in it though so the Mod Podge is rather diluted, will have to see how that turns out when I paint this -
IMG-20230524-150456922.jpg

I didn't Mod Podge the "inside" of the platform as it's my understanding that I'm just using the Mod Podge as a sealer to allow paint to go down without being sucked up by the XPS foam, and obviously I don't need to paint the inside of the platform...

Anyhow I have a "day" of airbrushing planned for tomorrow...

So, I've had a rather productive day, for a change...

I pushed on with the platform for Mordheim (possibly too quickly, more on that below), it's had a coat of Vallejo Game Air red terracotta, Vallejo Model Air dark earth followed by a Vallejo Model Air middlestone coat, a satin varnish layer, and the sides have had their clay wash applied (literally just minutes before taking this photo) -
IMG-20230525-150123753.jpg

The stone bridge received a varnish layer and it's clay wash and is now finished -

I cobbled together a ramp, as I hadn't made one yet, for ingress onto the platform, it's had it's coat of Mod Podge, and is still drying, yes I got the brick pattern the wrong way round on one side, I was cobbling this together from offcuts -

IMG-20230525-150314876.jpg

And whilst I had the airbrush out Harvester of Sorrow got his black undercoat and Vallejo Metal Color steel base coat -

I'm happy with the bridge, it'll do. There may be a problem on the platform though, the satin varnish is still very tacky on the top, I think it's a little tacky on the sides. It's not so much a problem on the sides as I'm happy with how they look with the clay wash just slapped on. However I've got clay wash runs on the top side, which I doubt I can remove given the varnish is tacky, and if the varnish remains tacky I may not be able to put further clay wash down as the clay wash won't be removable (it'll just stick in the varnish layer), and I do want it removable as I want the cobbles to show up, if they're even that well defined...

Hopefully I can leave the platform to dry further overnight and the varnish will have dried properly...

The ramp is not ideal, but it's functional and it'll do. I have no further off cuts that are useful for another ramp so I'm going to make a second ramp from coffee stirrers and balsa wood. The ramp I've just built will likely go with the second platform and the "wooden" one will go with this first platform.

I've given up on the idea of banners on Harvester of Sorrow, I'll leave it at the honour banner between the legs and that'll be it, the Warhound titans won't get banners. It's just too much of a faff for my fat fingers at that scale.

Getting there though, the plan for this long weekend is to hopefully finish the clay wash on the first platform, then I can make way to build and finish the second platform - it's sides are already in pieces, just needs it's top surface cut out and "cobbled", assembling using hot glue, a coat of Mod Podge, paint etc. and I'll finish off the ramp and build and finish the other ramp...

Your Mordheim terrain is really coming along - looks great! And the ramps remind me of the old White Dwarf photos of Mordheim boards! Excellent work and I can't wait to see it all set up.

Looking good Corpus Corvus. I love how the sides of the platform turned out. I hope the top turns out as well. You have inspired me to create a large platform to sit my pyramid upon. The pyramid is 18" to a side and three levels tall, so I would like the platform to be 24" square to give room around the base of the pyramid for troop movement. The 3d printed platforms I have will set the height of the platform (I think its three inches tall) so the main platform will fit in with all the other pieces. The idea is for the platforms to rise above the lower canal areas, and be populated with buildings.

Aaaand platform number one is done...

I had to leave it until today (2 days later) for the varnish to stop being tacky to the touch. The clay wash on the top surface didn't work quite as I wanted, I suspect that was for two reasons - 1) the cobbles aren't very well embossed, and 2) the varnish could still have been a teen tiny bit tacky in places, despite feeling dry.

You can see there is a texture though. I'm calling it weathered and scarred.

It'll look perfectly reasonable on the table.

Planning on building and Mod Podge-ing the second platform tomorrow ready for paint on bank holiday Monday...

So, just taking a break from today's "terrain building", as I've been standing at the dining room chest freezer for about an hour...

Quick photo of the result so far -

If I recall correctly this is about 20x16 inches...

The corners are a mess (worse joining than on the other platform, and they're not tidy on that one either), but hey ho, it's Mordheim.

I found some offcuts I didn't know I had of the brick patterned XPS (and going the right way) and used those and an offcut from the top surface as a surface for the ramp. It's separate so I can switch between the two. Using XPS was quicker than sitting and cutting balsa and coffee stirrers to fit...

Unfortunately I have the cut out for the ramp the wrong way round, it should be on the other side. That happened because I built (and glued) this onto the top surface!!! Note to self - don't build stuff upside down!!!

I think it's safe to say that to emboss a texture on the XPS laminate floor underlay you ned a better/sharper texture roller than Green Stuff World's ones, and one that won't leave gouges where the ends are. The grey XPS laminate floor underlay is softer/spongier than the grey XPS foam you can currently buy from model stuff suppliers, which itself doesn't take GSW roller textures very well either, but it takes it better than the XPS laminate floor underlay.

Anyhow, Mod Podge will be applied to this all over later on, then hopefully tomorrow I can paint and clay wash this and the two ramps.

Every time I sit at the table recently I've thought I'll be there for longer than I actually am...

This afternoon I pushed on with the second platform for Mordheim.

Photos below of progress so far.

It got the Vallejo Game Air red terracotta on the sides and the Vallejo Model Air dark earth and middlestone on top. It nearly didn't get finished on top as I ran out of dark earth just as I finished painting the top, and I'm probably out of middlestone and red terracotta now also, luckily I did the ramps first!!!

Clay wash applied, I left the paint to dry for 2 hours, it seemed dry, and I didn't put down a satin varnish layer because the paint comes out satin anyhow and felt smooth enough, plus I didn't want the 2 day waiting time I had last time... The sides don't matter but I'm hoping I can get it off the top reasonably well -

Going to leave it a few hours as that's how long the clay wash on top will likely take to dry off, but hopefully this'll be finished tonight.

I'm happy with that, it's not display quality but it'll do the job.

I'm going to put terrain building on hold for a while, and get back to painting figures, the Outlaws of Stirwood Forest need finishing for a start...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Not-Robin Hood, not-Robin Hood, and his merry people, riding down the Stir, robbing from the rich, taking their wyrdstone, not-Robin Hood, not-Robin Hood...

So, I sat for about an hour at the table this evening and finished off the Outlaws of Stirwood Forest.

I'm happy with those, they're not my best, but not my worst. The photos don't really do these justice as my highlights on some of them don't quite seem to "pop" compared to how they do to the mk1 eyeball.

Wednesday evening at the table...

I am in an assembly mood, and I needed to know what parts I have left over from assembling 2 warhound titans that I can rob for detailing the base of my revear titan...

...so, I spent about an hour assembling both warhound titans...

Quick photos below, I've left the heads separate and the armour plates off on purpose, these are both armed wysiwyg for Epic Armageddon -

IMG-20230531-193524408.jpg

IMG-20230531-193546513.jpg

The parts left over that I can use to detail the reaver's base, placed roughly, traitor carapace, traitor head, and a couple of inferno blasters, sorry about the blur -
IMG-20230531-193602303.jpg

Note to self - do not spill EMA plastic weld or other aggressive plastic weld adhesives on a self healing cutting mat!! I watched that bubbling up in front of me!!! I needed a new one anyway...
IMG-20230531-193653570.jpg

I need to make a fake torso skeleton to prop up the warhound traitor carapace/head for the reaver's base detail, but once I've done that I can see about texturing the base with Citadel armageddon dunes and "bury" the traitor parts and the reaver's foot, that's the plan anyhow...
