What I've been doing recently, a painting and modelling log...

Looking good. I like the line of figures you're using for the Sisters of Sigmar. I always wanted to do that Warband but never got around to it. I had Middenheimers (made from the plastic sprue), Reiklanders (Empire sprues), and Witch Hunters (box set along with some Empire minis). I really miss Mordheim. That and BFG were my favorites.

So, 3 weeks ago I was on a bit of a roll, pushing on with the Sisters of Sigmus, with just 2 to do. That week's Sunday though my right knee decided to have a bout of arthritic swelling, pain, and seized up in a bent position, thus, despite meds, I've been crippled, barely hobbling around with a walking stick and in no mood for hobby stuff for nearly 3 weeks...

...today however I felt like sitting at the table (still crippled though). The 14th Monaco Grand Prix Historique is on this weekend so I put that on my tablet and made a start on the Matriarch -

Decided to take a break at this point, after about 90 minutes at the table. The armour is done. I'm waiting on the Citadel Kantor blue glaze (for shading) to dry then I can start highlighting the blue cloth. Details to paint also. Nearly done though.

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Spent about another hour at the table this afternoon, probably shouldn't have as my eyes are tired...

...anyhow I made a start on the Bertha stand-in, her armour is pretty much done -

That's Vallejo model air black undercoat, Citadel Corvus black over that leaving the Vallejo black in the recesses, Citadel Mechanicus Standard grey first highlight, Citadel Fenrisian grey final highlight.

There's a few highlights I feel I need to tidy up/thin out a bit, but it's a start...

The Sisters of Sigmus, roaming the streets of Mordheim, bringing the word of Sigmar to the unbelievers. They're ready to kick butt and chew gum, and they're all out of butt!

Spent about an hour today finishing the Bertha stand-in, then took final "glamour" photos, which seem to have been resized a bit small by this site -

The highlights on the blue "pop" better and look as they do to my mk1 eyeball with a black background it would seem...

I was worried about snapping feet/legs off if I removed the figures from the bases, so I didn't make greenstuff cobblestone bases like I often do, I just put down some Citadel Stirland mud and a "grass tuft". Note to self, don't CA glue resin figures to bases until they're finished...

Not my best figures but they'll do for tabletop...

As a bit of a palate cleanser I've decided to do something a bit bigger than just figures for a change...

In September '23 I bought a "no box" Nighthaunt Black Coach from an ebayer, everything still on the sprue, proper instructions booklet, just no official box. GW want £85 for it, I paid £52.99, bargain!

So I sat at the table this afternoon for about an hour and made a start on it.

I started with the base for a change, the Citadel Stirland mud is still drying. I wanted a transition from cobbled street to muddy street with a bit of grass, the green stuff cobbles area didn't quite go as intended but it'll do -
IMG-20240519-153418784.jpg

Main sub assemblies of the coach itself ready for paint -
IMG-20240519-153203296.jpg

"Hangers on"/"geists"/whatever and the two driver variants -
IMG-20240519-153306353.jpg

Undead horse shaped objects -
IMG-20240519-153334706.jpg

The yoke or whatever it's called, couple of decoration parts for the base and the "stand" part which makes the coach look like it's floating -
IMG-20240519-153359270.jpg

The wheels have been left on the sprue to make painting a little easier, I forgot to take a photo of those though...

Whilst I will be painting this entirely, as the Black Coach, the plan is for it to be a scatter terrain piece, for use in Mordheim for example, with just the coach body attached to the base on it's wheels, as though it's recently been abandoned...

I will try to loose fit the yoke/horse shaped objects, "geists", driver(s) and that "stand" part, for final photos though, just so it can be seen complete as the Black Coach.

Airbrush undercoat next, I'll be starting from a Vallejo Model Air white grey undercoat.

Spent about 30 minutes at the table tonight and airbrushed on the Vallejo Model Air white grey undercoat on the Black Coach...

IMG-20240521-200630927.jpg

IMG-20240521-200717886.jpg

Not everything has been undercoated white grey, some areas need a black undercoat, the wheels and other metal parts for example, because they'll be done with Vallejo Metal Color paints or just areas with colours that will benefit from a black undercoat, they'll get undercoated by hand with ye olde hairy stick.

Gave up for tonight due to tiredness and the need for the Vallejo white grey to dry...

ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring (Nordschleife) this week(end), so whilst Qualifying 2 aired on youtube this evening I sat at the table with it on my tablet and pushed forwards with the Black Coach...

Everything that needs to be metal, or anything other than black wood, got undercoated Vallejo Model Air black by hand -
IMG-20240530-203728637.jpg

I then applied a thinned layer of Citadel Contrast Black Templar (2:1 medium to paint) to the areas that are meant to be black wood -
IMG-20240530-211253235.jpg

The above layer didn't look opaque enough to the mk1 eyeball so I applied a second -
IMG-20240530-222414826.jpg

The wheels got painted Vallejo Model Air black then Vallejo Metal Color Steel, I think I need to shake the bottle of "steel" more and apply a second layer as the wheels look too dark -
IMG-20240530-222154026.jpg

I'm not happy with the contrast paint, first layer wasn't opaque enough, and the second layer made everything too opaque, thus the highlights don't show through anywhere near as much as I wanted. I live and learn. I should be able to rescue it with more highlights than initially planned...

I'm back, back in black...

So, due to the usual summer (and autumn it seems!) heat/humidity where I live in the UK I've not sat at the table since June, an annual feature now it seems, and I've not done anything "GW" since the post above. Mother has not been well again so I've been looking after her more this past month, although she's been getting better this past week, and life has generally been conspiring against me...

...however due to insomnia tonight I decided to force myself to sit at the table and managed to spend 5-6 hours pushing on with The Black Coach, mostly waiting for stuff to dry, heating wasn't on, chilly "work area"...

Whilst doing this I engaged in the traditional ritual of shaking an (old formula) pot of Agrax, not realising I hadn't closed it properly. Suffice to say 2 washes later and my new "khaki" t-shirt still has marks all over!!!

Photos below, not my best, apologies, best I could do today...

Managed to "save" the black wood with some drybrushing and a layer of the current formula Nuln oil. Steel, gold and leather parts were also painted -

Steel bits got an Agrax layer, on the parts above and the yoke -
IMG-20241119-035808982.jpg

"stone" bits painted, the casket and tombstones were drybrushed Dawnstone and Administratum grey, the cobbles on the base were painted Dawnstone and have since the photo below had a Nuln oil layer -

IMG-20241119-044229235.jpg

And here's where I'm at now -

Carriage, not glued, other than sub assemblies you've seen, all "push fitted" -
IMG-20241119-065500744.jpg

Yoke -
IMG-20241119-065600055.jpg

Undead horses -
IMG-20241119-065654431.jpg

I tried dry fitting the horses to the yoke, but for some reason they won't fit. I'm going to have to glue them to it, with a bit of contorting of parts...

Getting there though, the carriage is pretty much done, details to paint, 2 driver models and "hangers on" to paint, and the base to finish...

Not sure where you are, but I don't recall having a real heatwave this past summer (not by recent standards anyway).

I hate Mondays...

Finished The Black Coach, but can't seem to get good photos, below are the best of what I took, I think my new 14" ring light gives off too much light thus my phone's camera was over exposing regardless of any manual settings I tried!

IMG-20241125-204432528.jpg

IMG-20241125-204535489.jpg

After gluing the undead horses to the yoke (with some cutting, force, and a ton of CA glue) I realised I've got the horse sections the wrong way round and that's why they weren't fitting right!! Dohhhh!!

Too late now to bother fixing it and life's too short. I'm going to chalk this one up to experience and move on.

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Maybe the photo is technically over-exposed, but it sure makes the spirits look very ghostly - almost a little like the special effects from the original Ghostbusters movie. Excellent work on that model!

The Steel Legion grows...

Over the summer I decided to add to my Inquisitorial/Grey Knights/Steel Legion army mashup idea (based on the 3rd edition demon hunters codex) with a view to being able to run it as just Imperial Guard (mainly because in current 40k my Ordo Malleus terminator inquisitor is now squatted/bumped to "legends"). So I bought another infantry squad, and some resin proxy models to make a platoon command squad...

The infantry squad -
IMG-20241127-104737313.jpg

Also bought a man in uncomfortable boots, er sorry, a plasma gunner, for the above squad -
IMG-20241127-104923020.jpg

Sergeant variant, he needs some stripping, he'll go in the platoon command squad -
IMG-20241127-104948070.jpg

I was in a building mood this AM so I sat and assembled the platoon command squad (these are a bit short/weedy looking compared to GW's models, especially the Kasrkin!). The guy with the plasma gun needs a little bit of filler/green stuff to disguise joins on the arms. These were bought from an etsy seller. -

Last year I managed to get hold of a Kasrkin box, so I assembled them today also -

This is a quick photochop I did of how they'll look in Steel Legion colours -

I'm certain assembling the models with arms attached (apart from the standard bearer) will come back to bite me when painting commences!

Just need another infantry squad, a sentinel, a basilisk, a leman russ and 3 chimera transports, then along with Yarrick (used as a basic commissar), I'll have a decent looking 1500pt 10th edition army...

With just a chimera and a basilisk added (and not using the platoon command squad) I can field what I've got as 1000pts...

So, new year, new project...

Haven't done anything GW related since the post above, started a Star Wars project on New Years day and I'm about halfway through that (but the second half won't take long), no photos of that here, I'm documenting it on a scale model forum. However, I've decided 2025, at least the next month or so, will be box set month...

Around 2015 I bought the 2014 (4th) edition of Space Hulk without figures and the genestealers from that edition in 2 separate ebay lots. Last year I went a bit mad and bought 1st edition Space Hulk and the Deathwing expansion, 100% complete with figures, so technically I have two board sets now, and both editions rules, counters etc...

In 2023 I collected a full set of RTB9 terminators, plus extras to make the squads from 4th edition. Because, one of a few "holy grail" for me, less expensive than 3rd/4th edition plastics, and they fit Space Hulk better aesthetically imho especially as they're not marked as Blood Angels (mine will be Deathwing)... Sorry, forgot to take photos of them!

Also in '23 I bought 3rd edition Talisman core set -

Photos below of the Space Hulk collection, I've squeezed the 1st edition core set and 4th edition into the 1st edition core box, I have the 4th edition box but decided not to use it, sorry about the blur on these.

Deathwing including figures -
IMG-20250114-182644881.jpg

Core sets -
IMG-20250114-182044323.jpg

IMG-20250114-182050197.jpg

Terminators and genestealers from 1st edition -
IMG-20250114-182215017.jpg

IMG-20250114-182225618.jpg

IMG-20250114-182236103.jpg

3rd/4th edition genestealers -
IMG-20250114-182302735.jpg

IMG-20250114-182316738.jpg

So, to start I'll be trying to paint 11 Talisman characters, 10 plastic 1st edition Space Hulk terminators, and 20 genestealers. The airbrush and contrast paint will be my friends in this task...

Stripping will likely have to be done on most terminators and genestealers.

To make them look nicer I'll be using GW's boarding actions bases, 25mm for the genestealers and 28.5 for the terminators. No clue what I'll do for basing the Talisman figures.

The extra 1st edition Space Hulk terminators and any extra genestealers, along with the RTB9s will get done after the above...

Let's see how far I get on these, hmmm...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Spent a few hours at the table this AM making a start on the Space Hulk stuff...

I stripped 5 terminators and 2 genestealers the other night...

Undercoated 5 terminators with Vallejo Model Air white grey, the genestealers got bonewhite -
IMG-20250118-105222264.jpg

IMG-20250118-105227633.jpg

I was less than neat in using contrast paint (leviadon blue/volupus pink) on the genestealers, but they'll do -
IMG-20250118-131058168.jpg

IMG-20250118-131218375.jpg

The terminators turned out better than expected given that I liberally applied Blood Angels red (thinned 1:2 paint:medium) -
IMG-20250118-131123342.jpg

IMG-20250118-131137816.jpg

Need to do bases, decals and do something with the flamer, but given these are quick paint jobs to get them on the table I'm happy so far.

Leviadon blue/volupus pink aren't quite the colours I wanted for the genestealers but they'll do.

I only stripped 2 genestealers because I have 13 totally unpainted from 1st edition and the other 5 which are painted (not by me) are no worse than my 2 today, they just need a bit of a tidy up (as do my 2 so far) and then rebasing imo.

Half the terminators almost done is a very quick start for me, not really my usual standard but not bad for a few hours!

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.
