What I've been doing recently, a painting and modelling log...

Been a few weeks...

Sat at the table this afternoon and pushed on with the Space Hulk 1st edition "project"...

5 of 10 terminators finished, they just need a little fettling of the decals and a satin clear coat. I can't seem to source any sort of crux terminatus so I'm leaving the other shoulder pad blank, and I'm leaving the flamer as is because I don't know what to do with it as any freehand I do would degrade the paintjob -

5 of 20 genestealers, these came to me painted, I just rebased them -

I made a start on 5 more terminators and 3 genestealers (making 5 I've painted), I had put my tripod/ring light away at this point so apologies for the rubbish photos -

Happy so far, quickest bunch of "tabletop ready" figures I've done in a long while...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

For the heavy flamer you could go with the classic yellow and black hazard stripes or maybe a flame pattern and some black and white checks like attached.

For the crux terminatus do you have access to a printer? You could buy some decal sheets and grab a design off the internet, multiple it up in whatever imaging software you like and then print a bunch.

Are you sure you are using leviadon blue?

Mine has always come out as a deep navy blue, but yours looks more like a washed out faded jeans blue.

If you are watering it down maybe try doing one without thinning it down further and you might get closer to the blue from the ones you didn’t paint

The dark capes in this photo are the leviadon blue that comes out of my pot

Having procrastinarated I'm going to attempt hazard stripes, might use masking tape to get them straight though.

Yup. It's thinned 1:2 paint:contrast medium. They're not a million miles off examples in contemporary issues of White Dwarf. I am going to try thinning 1:1 but neat leviadon blue is too dark. I'm also going to switch volupus pink for magos purple...

10 days later...

Not been sleeping well lately so I sat at the table tonight/this AM...

I started by trying freehand hazard stripes on the flamer, they're not the best but they'll do -

IMG-20250216-061601405.jpg

Pushed on with and finished the other Space Hulk terminator squad, again freehanding hazard stripes on the flamer -

Based up the 3 genestealers I painted 10 days ago, added to the two I did already, making 10 of 20 painted -

So that's two thirds of the box set "tabletop ready"!

Plan going forwards is to get the other 10 genestealers done, then start on the RTB9s, which I'll try to put a bit more effort into. They will represent the squads needed for the Deathwing expansion as well as being usable as the 3rd/4th edition squads...

I really miss the era of single pose minis. I know multi-pose is way better, but there is something beautiful in the simplicity that I miss.

Spent an hour or so at the table this afternoon...

I started by fixing one of the RTB9 bodies, as we can see, it was missing a peg, drilling and a bit of styrene rod solved that -

IMG-20250221-145545026.jpg

I glued the other RTB9s together and stuffed the tabs into slotta bases, I've run out of 25mm one's so couldn't temp base all of them -

I need a captain, I have an RTB9 captain that I painted 30 years ago but I can do better so I'm using this one I cobbled together last year, I'm also going to use this cyclone missile launcher guy as a test for the paint scheme, he's undercoated with Citadel Wraithbone (from a pot, thinned for airbrushing) -

The remaining core set genestealers went from bare plastic to being undercoated with Vallejo bone white -

Those metal terminators really take me back. Great models, even if they are a little small compared to modern stuff. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

Only 5 to go...

Did these yesterday -
IMG-20250223-182228052.jpg

Had a bit of a 'mare with these, I tried just 1:1 thining but something went weird with Leviadon blue, it just wouldn't cover and just pooled! Too much medium? Too much water on my brush? Undercoat too glossy? Who knows!:unsure:

They'll do for tabletop...

Went round my gaming buddy's apartment today and played some Space Hulk 1st edition, haven't been round his for just over 2 years for one reason or another...

Mission 2 in progress, just about got the map on a 4ft square area -
IMG-20250228-145816421.jpg

Last stand, I had blocked off the stealer entry points on the side in the photo but lost 2 terminators the other side without blocking entry points, luckily I only needed a handful of kills and had a terminator ready on overwatch -

Start of mission three, I had no idea what I was doing -

Not looking good on squad b's side of the map -

Tactical error -

Definitely a tactical error -

Definitely bad over on squad b's side-

Even worse for squad b -

My opponent moved the C.A.T, out of realistic reach for me, so as time was getting on and I was outnumbered about 4:1 we called it a day and a genestealer win (he lost the first two missions though) -

We hope to play the final 3 missions in the 1st edition original campaign in a few weeks time, by which time I will hopefully have painted the last 5 core box set genestealers and some of the RTB9s...

It's been a long while since I did any miniatures (4 months), I haven't done the final 5 Genestealers or started the RTB9s for Space Hulk, for reasons...

Usually in recent years during the summer/heatwave/warmer months I haven't been able to sit at the table and paint (partly due to chronic health issues getting in the way), however it's too hot in "my room" (30°C at 16:00 despite having a "portable" air con) and the Spa 24 is on (youtube GT World), plus I've unusually for this time of year been enthused about a few single figures I have...

...so unusually for me I spent the best part of 9 hours at the table overnight (Saturday through Sunday)!

FUS-RO-DAH! If you know, you know. This is from Modiphius' Elder Scrolls game -

Unfortunately I feel neither are particularly great work by me, for example I couldn't get the highlights right on Batman so I gave up. As Adam Loper (@TabletopMinions) once said though "they can't all be bangers"...

My photos aren't helping either, my camera (phone), ring light and room lights don't seem to want to work well together all of a sudden recently!!

Anyhow they are what they are and I'm happy I've painted them.

Leviadon blue just does not like my Vallejo bone white undercut, no idea why as it's the only contrast paint I've got that doesn't work properly (it's like it's too thin and just runs into the recesses, even neat!?).

Oh well.

Space Hulk 1st edition core set completed. Took a while but I got there eventually.

I also made a start on the RTB09s, by doing a test scheme on the cyclone missile launcher marine. No photos as it needs some tidy up/remedial work. Dark Angels contrast went all over the place, basilicanum grey over dawnstone on the crux terminatus didn't work and I can't seem to see well enough to do even half good highlights (despite using a magnifier)!!

Much like my 2nd edition chaos terminators, and because some of the details on the RTB09s are not very well defined, I am inclined to put them to one side as I feel I cannot do them justice...
