What I've been doing recently, a painting and modelling log...

Friday night at the table, or very early Saturday morning at the table, whichever way you want to cut it...

I've decided to put the Reiksguard Knights to one side for the moment. I may still get them done before next year though.

Instead tonight I made a start on Salome Kohn (Hasslefree Miniatures) and Jakob Knochengard (Reaper Miniatures), 2 Witch Hunters for my starter Mordheim warband. Most of the time was spent doing their dark brown/black leather coats...

Photos below, apologies for the blur/out of focus nature, I took these very very quickly with my mobile. Please also note that the black glaze I put down was still drying in places, for some reason Vallejo Black Ink + Vallejo Glaze Medium means the layers you put down will take forever to dry, either that or it's just not warm enough in my dining room! -

This is Jakob, note that his boots are not really painted, they just had a very thin layer of Citadel Abaddon Black over the bare metal, I do like how they look though, for the metal armour on his boots I may leave them as is...

This is Salome, we've seen her before as I bought her when I was looking for a Witch Hunter for WHQ '95 and used her as a test mule for working out how I was going to do the OG WHQ '95 Witch Hunter's coat -

The coats are pretty much done, but I may add another coat of black glaze to darken them down a little more in specific places and perhaps add some lighter highlights, if I can make them look right. Although, I do feel I need to go back and blend a bit better the highlights on the back of the top of Jakob's coat (and possibly elsewhere), they're a bit thick looking and somewhat more hard edged than I'd like in places.

Much detail to paint, but I've base coated most of those details in either Citadel Wraithbone or Vallejo Model Air Silver, ready for Citadel Contrast paints. Other details I've left as is, because they'll be black or because I need to check my (very limited) references to see what they are/how to paint them - there's a couple I painted in Wraithbone on Jakob I'm not sure about either...

Thanks as always for looking, C&C welcome.

Something dropped through the door today...

"Back in the day" as well as my 100+ figure Dark Angels army, and my small Chaos and Eldar armies, I also had quite a few random figures (mostly 40k stuff). Sadly many of those random models (not the armies) ended up in landfill (as far as I know) due to house moves at the turn of the century and the early-mid 00s. Boy do I wish they hadn't got chucked...

One figure I remember having, one of the few Warhammer Fantasy figures I had, came on the front of White Dwarf 238, here in the UK at least, not sure about other parts of the world.

That figure, was Aenur - Sword of the Twilight, given away free with that issue because it was the issue that detailed the release of Mordheim.

I have no idea what I did with my copy of that figure, I vaguely recall painting it green at the time, but I wasn't really interested in it at that time. However as I'm currently "getting into" Mordheim I decided to see if I could purchase another copy of that figure. Turns out there's quite a few on ebay in various states. So I bought mine from a seller purporting to be Florence Nightingale Hospice charity.

Turned up looking OK -

Sadly most official GW references I can find are of the very low resolution variety, but you can pick out the main colours and vaguely see what the details are. I will however enjoy painting this one as I have my own ideas on what colours to paint him...

Nice! I collected White Dwarf for many years, and don’t remember ever getting a metal mini free with one over here in the US. A few plastic ones (which I still have), but no metal. Of course, I am getting old….

So, having been awake since 02:00, I had a stab at doing more on Salome and Jakob this morning during daylight hours, probably shouldn't paint when tired but it didn't go too badly...

To be honest though, I ended up concentrating on Jakob, and did very little on Salome.

I managed to tidy up the highlights on Jakob's coat. I don't have a Mordheim specific cobblestone type base so I stuck him on one of the dungeon paved bases I've been using for my WHQ '95 figures, anyway it'll fit better with the other 2 models, which I already painted for WHQ '95, that I will be using in my Mordheim warband.

Unfortunately his sword is a bit bent up, despite my attempt at straightening it, he came to me like that, despite being in one of Reaper's blister packs. Ho hum...

The result -

I'm a little peeved because I chipped a corner of the coat, and didn't notice when taking the above photos and, the coat's satin varnish is reflecting too much under my lighting so you can't really see the highlights all that well!

Other than that though he's turned out OK.

It's terrain Thursday...

Well, kind of. I spent some time today trying to build another Mordheim building, same as before - using the artwork from the OG starter set printed onto some labels, attached to some 1mm cardstock, and the few OG plastic parts I managed to buy off ebay a month or so ago.

I do not have enough corners or beams to make a full set of the OG buildings (nor doors or windows but they're not critical structural elements), just enough to make the two corner pieces and most of the building I made today, but I'm short two corners for it. In fact, besides windows/doors, I'm short 17 corners and 4 beams for a full OG set of buildings...

I seem to be dismal at making moulds, and/or using casting materials, so that's not really an option going forwards.

So, the only other option I have (besides paying silly ebay prices for parts) is scratch building some corner and beam pieces. So I tried one idea on how to go about making some corners today and made two quick proofs of concept...

So, magnets everywhere!

I need to rethink this idea, it doesn't really work for this building, and will be even worse for the 2 big buildings.

I have another idea I can try. And once I nail how to make corners and beams that work without having to glue everything together, I can replicate them at will and build as many of the OG style buildings as I wish...

I would glue the walls together and stick the quoins on the outside, but I want to be able to disassemble each building as much as possible and flat pack them.

At least my cardstock with printed artwork on labels looks OK, although I think I need to change my printer's ink as the interior colour came out a bit green, instead of grey...

I think magnets are probably your best bet, considering the priority of having the scenery store as flat as possible. Perhaps you could carve some stone blocks or timbers out of xps foam, and hollow out cavities for the magnets to hide in. Depending on the size of the blocks and magnets, you might even be able to get away with having them all be on the inside surfaces (and not having to spend time using filler to hide the magnet holes).

Thanks Mr M. Good idea, but I'm not sure how I'd secure the magnets in the XPS. That did give me another idea though, I could cut a groove in columns of XPS and then carve the quoins into the XPS. And then the walls could just slide into the XPS columns. Unfortunately I don't have any suitable XPS for it or anything to successfully, quickly and easily cut the grooves (A craft knife just wouldn't do it well enough imho).

I do have some 5mm thick sheets of XPS though, and you've given me an idea of how to make a quick and easy base, with a cobblestone-like pavement, for each of these buildings, that can be removed for storage... (y)

Anyhow, after the slight disaster this morning, I put my brain in gear this afternoon and had another go at making the corner pieces...

This is the result -

The new corners are superglued to the top wall in this photo -

How they look on the inside, the styrene strip is only glued to the same wall as the quoins, making a groove/channel, it's not pretty but it works, so far -
IMG-20211216-153139830-HDR.jpg

IMG-20211216-153149589-HDR.jpg

And it all still comes apart ready for storage -
IMG-20211216-153235356-HDR.jpg

I'm happier with this setup, although I have some fettling/filling to do on the new corner pieces.

I will probably glue the plastic beam to the new corners and glue the bottom level plastics in place on one side of each wall piece, it'll add a bit of stability.

Some of my Evergreen angle styrene isn't 90 degrees like it should be (no idea why?!), and despite some bending to try to fix it, it ended up making the right corner not square, thus the groove/channel ended up being more of a v shape, so I had to put a bit more styrene in that side to hold the front wall...

There are still magnets in place, but they're only holding the floor level, although I guess they may also provide some stability for the corners as well.

So, just the two big buildings to make, for the first third to a quarter of a table's worth of buildings, I'll have to make all the corners for them (along with making 4 beams), but that should now be a trivial matter.

Those quoin connectors turned out pretty darn good from the exterior. I see what you mean about the interior looking a little rough, but a bit of texturing and paint will hopefully go a long way for making them blend in better. Could always use the old black drybrush or black pigments to make the inside corners look like they were in a bit of a fire to disguise things.

Yeah I'll do the Rolling Stones thing, and paint them black. I was thinking of painting them metal, particularly the big bit of styrene on the right side, as though someone was trying to shore the walls up whilst scavenging, along with adding a strip of angle styrene to the outside of the quoins, painted metal, but then I realised that for the outside at least it'd look a bit silly as they'd be on the first floor...

Spent today pushing the Reiksguard Knights forward...

Reasonably happy with how the riders turned out, they're never going to be anywhere near my best efforts but as a unit they look OK.

GW hand painted a Reiksguard cross on the top part of the inside of the standard, I assume they did the same or similar on the outside of the musician's horn cloth thing, but I can't find any reference for that (or the other side of the standard). However I'm not that good. I could make my own decals and apply them, but I feel decal paper is too thick and wouldn't conform nicely to the surface (even with a ton of stuff like Microsol/Microset), so for the moment I'm opting not to add any symbols.

Other than that, just their horse shaped objects to do and the whole unit will be done!

So, back to doing a bit of Mordheim today...

Spent a couple of hours or so this afternoon making a start on Aenur, Sword of Twilight, although at times I was going cross eyed and felt I needed a special brush to get into all the nooks/crevices -

That cloak is all Citadel Contrast paint, Talassar Blue to be precise. I have an urge to go back over it with Teclis Blue and Lothern Blue for highlights but I'm afraid of ruining what looks like a very good, for me, already highlighted cloak! I couldn't have done it better using normal Citadel paints!!

His face has come out a bit too tanned for my liking, so I'll try to add some highlights to it and try to make him look a bit more like a pasty-faced elf...

The areas that are Wraithbone still will end up white.

Really pleased with how this is looking so far.

Looks great! Excellent job painting the leather. I agree that the face came out tan, but the progression from shadow to highlight came out very nicely. Are the armor scales painted in NMM, or is it metallic paint with a blue shade? Also, how are you planning to paint the sword? Can't wait to see the final result!

Thanks.

The Ithilmar armour was painted Vallejo Model Air Silver over Citadel Abaddon Black, leaving no black showing. Then I applied Citadel Contrast Akhelian Green over the silver. Then I went back to each scale (as best as I could, it was by this time I had started to go cross eyed) and applied a layer of Citadel Grey Knights Steel mixed into the Vallejo Model Air Silver, then a layer of straight Vallejo Model Air Silver over the top of that, leaving the Akhelian Green showing in the recesses.

I'm not sure I needed the Grey Knights Steel, as I went over most, if not all of it, on each scale with the Vallejo Model Air Silver, but I thought I'd try it.

Wasn't entirely my idea, I borrowed it from a scan of a GW Lumineth Realm-Lords painting guide that's knocking around on t'interwebz.

As for the sword...

The fluff states it's rumoured to be a magical sword. But I'm loathe to go down the route of painting it like a 40k power sword. But obviously just painting it with Vallejo Metal Colors won't look right either, because there'll be no indication of it possibly being magical.

GW didn't seem to make much of the sword, it just got painted silver with some highlights.

So, I dunno yet.

I'm toying with the idea of putting a thin blue glaze over it once I've painted it with Vallejo Metal Colors.

Would welcome ideas on that though.
