Well hopefully they've learned a lesson in how to treat the franchise from creative assembly. Alien isolation is an absolutely tremendous addition to the series. I love the angle they took which sees you playing as Ripleys daughter, Amanda. So obvious now they've done it but it's a stroke of genius and allows plenty of room for artistic licence without urinating all over the original. I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the series.

You have to like stealth and be patient though. I'm not much of either, so it's very hard for me.

Also the franchise taking the direction that it did and the travesty that is AvP is doubly annoying given the amazing direction the comics took. I'm not going to say there weren't some misses, but over all, WAY better than the movies from Alien 3 on.

Alien 4 makes alien 3 look like Once Upon a Time in America. But seriously though, I don't think Ali3n (or whatever the hell it was called) was that bad, it just had the misfortune of coming after the first two. And I've got a soft spot for David Fincher, and correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that film was his feature debut.? Big property to trust a new guy with but I think it's okay.
The AvP game on the pc was immense though. Not so much stealth in that one. I used to hammer that game.

Alien 3 was fine & I'll watch it, but after Aliens and what happened in the comics, fine wasn't enough.

I've gathered (a mate's a HUGE Aliens fan) that most of what was considered a letdown about the third movie was how it rendered all of the comics, all the supporting material, everything, no longer canon or canon-compliant at one stroke. It effectively squatted a huge amount of fandom-acclaimed and well-written material. The only other movie as hated by a fandom I can think of is Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which had exactly nothing to do with Mad Max.

(Incidentally, am fully expecting Fury Road to be even worse than Blunderdome. My bro reports an absence of Aussie accents in the trailer - FAIL.)

I never read the comics or anything. I've read about all the different script versions for 3 though. Crazy things like a man made wooden planet inhabited by monks or something. That film could've been a lot, lot worse lol!

Well the comics took place about a decade or so later and Ripley no where to be seen, Newt in a psych ward and Hicks in and out of the brig all because of what happened on LV-426. They then go to what they believe is the alien homeworld where there is a whole ecosystem where the Alien has it place, but it's not necessarily the top. All the while an apocalypse is happening on earth. And that's just the first comic series. Ripley doesn't even return till the third series. I had heard that the reason Ripley dies in the end of Alien 3 is because Sigourney Weaver didn't like the military aspect of Aliens and wanted out. If they had just gone with the comics, she wouldn't even have had to think about returning until the 5th movie and they would have been wayyy cooler (or at least potentially so).

I've seen that title on Netflix! Gonna have to try it now despite Netflix thinking it's only 2 stars for me.

Alien Isolation is one of the best and most visually incredible games I've ever played. I stream it via Steam to my HTPC on the big new TV and surround sound and it's too intense to play for more than an hour or two at a time.

I heard the new Alien by Blomkampf is actually a reboot? Since they're rebooting everything nowadays it allows them to completely ignore all previous movies, comics, "established" canon etc. which for Alien is probably a good thing. Especially since the Prometheus abomination.

The sound design on A:I is particularly of note. Really hope they win an award for that, it's the best I've ever heard in a game. You can never tell what that sound in the vents is! The slightest sound of scratching or movement sees you bolting for the nearest piece of cover and hiding for like ten minutes hahaha!
A complete reboot might be good but I hope they go down the Alien route rather than Aliens. The first film was and still is the stand out film for me. There's just something about the Alien's single-mindedness that I find disturbing; it's only goal is simply to kill absolutely everyone, even at the expense of itself. There is no conscience or morality with it, no bargaining or begging, it is driven by pure instinct and that instinct is to kill. I always found that deeply disturbing, and no other film in the franchise has quite managed to explore those concepts as effectively I feel. I also hope they don't cgi the beast. It has to be a guy running around in a latex suit or it ain't happening for me lol!

So the visit to the new FLGS was a success. Very friendly and helpful staff and it seems I have a gaming nexus right on my doorstep. They have 12 4' by 4' tables, regular tournaments and competitions and are open till 10 PM. Apparently the punters there will play pretty much anything given some advance warning. Best of all I picked up some glue, brushes and paints and walked away with change from a score :D

I dig the Alien Isolation discussion that @cardyfreak brought up, that game is terrifying. Dan Abnett of GW-lit fame wrote the story for it, interesting tie-in to our hobby. Makes sense, I can only imagine how inspiring Alien must have been to the 40K developers.
