What's on your mind?

I dropped all miniature games just before covid as I was without good job, my sons were small, was studying and basically Mordheim wasn't fun, when the bloody club game took 1-2 hrs to make the table , 1-2 to play one game, and 30m to get everything in the boxes after.
Was also coming out from ultra-competitive Flames of War community, so my first gang for Mordheim was Dark Elves. My time with that, made me think about what is fun in the games beside winning, and started to make bit more funny gang, the issue being nobody else was doing the same, so left the club. Good people, but not my cup of tea nowish, might go back if I ever get my Bolt Action stuff painted up, as the guys who play that are not comp-people.
Now, with good enough, government job, kids getting to practices without me (meh, I drive everyone still), and lot of remote work, I have at last a chance to get somebody done.
And some of my oldest friends, are getting stuff done for Necromunda, and aren't not very comp-focused ones even. I need to mind, that I won't go to the dark 'that guy' corner ever with them. :)

mine has opened again this year after the covid lockdown and its been great to see all the guys again , some of whome ive known for 50+ years.
we are lucky to be able to keep the tables up permanently so games last as long as they need to.
our longest game of D&D whent on for about 5 years!
 
Well, it's back to the garage again here, me and my friend are getting craploads of 3d/trash terrain up in 12"by12". My idea is to do them so no time is needing to getting table up. And taking them down too.

I think this is why tiles have such an allure these days. Put them down, rotate and you’re done.

Saying that even more ‘traditional’ methods of based terrain doesn’t take long - most games include this as part of the game experience itself - so it shouldn’t really take hours, what were they doing @Girl nation ?

Anyway, in an act of irony (as I started this topic) I’ve now got a game booked in for this weekend!! 😁

My first dedicated gaming surface was the side of a large corrugated cardboard box painted gloss green (which was what we had in the garage). It got more textured over the years as it dented where you leant on it.
Stuck some polystyrene packaging hills on it also painted gloss green. Many a good game of Epic was played over that!

It was the early 90s!

Before that, just used a table, desk or floor.
 
The Mordheim fckers in the club, had so much stuff that wasn't glued down, fences, statues, buildings, whatever, with those guys, who had 10 xbows , any terrain was welcome.

There is certainly a fine line between keeping your terrain loose and changeable and having it built for ease of play.

Some people really like putting down each piece of fence and tree, and others like me like just grabbing 6 or 7 set pieces and a bunch of scatter terrain and getting in with it.

I used to like all the individual bits but I'm erring closer to the middle ground these days. Larger set pieces with plenty of small scatter bits to blend them together.

My ZM table made me realise that hundreds of individual parts is a nightmare.

I bought and painted a bunch of walls for my ZM tiles to add depth and I rarely use them because they simply don’t add enough to the game to make setting them up and playing around them worth it.

I do stop like using them in sector mechanicus games though as actual wall sections and platforms to make a ground level labyrinth.

I have to say for all the complaining people do about the ZM tiles they are actually a really easy and convenient way to play a game quickly.
 
@almic85 I completely agree about the old ZM tiles from the N17 box! It's really a shame that GW didn't sell those separately or keep them in print longer - it was one of the best features of new Necromunda. It was a design feature that hearkened back to the N95 card & bulkhead terrain - simple, fast, and effective.

Well, apparently I'm slowly starting to flirt with Necromunda Ash Wastes at least in my mind as well.

The idea of a gang that has stolen a Goliath Rockgrinder truck and wants to stop and ambush a Cargo-8 Ridgehauler, plus hidden Escher Cutters lurking in the distance for their chances and looking to get in lightning fast on the act as a Goliath Mauler over a dune rushes into a container at full throttle like a can opener, the ash wastes and vehicles have something to offer. Everyone stalks everyone. Between the site of the raid and the caravanserai, dimly outlined in the distance, the Ash Waste Nomads wait eagerly to loot and rob the survivors.

With them and the next sandstorm, everything disappears into the infinity of the barren ash desert. Worms and other inhabitants do the rest and the next morning it looks as if nothing had ever happened.

This infinity and the struggle for one's own survival and survival as a gang also has a special and certain poetry.

Wow, makes one imagine that real battles in medieval times were also like that, slowly making your spears forward looking for open targets, and not like in Braveheart/Vikings where everyone is just going like madman.
