What's on your mind?

@Stoof yeah, nothing like computers to mess up what was one a simple task.

I once had a USB stick that got its MBR corrupted after using it as a boot device, it completely died a while after that.

Linux and to some extent BSD has always had this issue with multiple distros, I tend to stick to main branch stuff like Ubuntu or Fedora (the trunk being Debian and Red Hat etc.) as the chances of it being mangled is lesser.

There’s a whole mess of BIOS/UEFI now too, plus secure boot which we never had to deal with several years ago which adds extra complications.

Strange that they all failed… only common factor there is the laptop itself. Did any previous images boot? Windows? I’m just interested more than anything else, not trying to patronise by online diagnosing a machine I’ve never seen!!

It's an old-ish laptop (10 years?) running Windows 7. Which it runs, but it's pretty slow. I wanted to create a USB boot for it so I could see if it ran any quicker on Linux, having done the same thing a couple of times in the past. I was not expecting it to be such a huge pain in the rear this time around. My initial attempt was Ubuntu via Rufus, following the guide from ubuntu.com itself. After a couple of different blends of that - one of which did boot and run quite well exactly once before never booting again - I tried mint (and a new USB stick) and again, no luck. Don't get hung up on troubleshooting it, it doesn't really matter - just an experiment.

Just had an idea come to me in a dream. Space ships that fit together to form a sphere. Maybe forming an artificial world / space station. Maybe a colony fleet.

While we’re at it… Here’s my favourite artificial planet!!

So iconic (for those who know where it’s from).

Thanks to this thread, which made me think "those old publications will be easier to use for finding minis than the new website", I was reminded to check the new GW website to see if it had updated to include my most recent order for the MTO Rogue Trader rules...

More than three weeks after I queried it with GW, I still can't see my order up there.

I've done more than enough DB tinkering over the last month - try pulling archive copies of a DB, with all its schemas, into a different location and crack it open by resetting the root password since no-one can remember it in order to start the service properly and investigate the historic values and re-upload a year of data to the live version - to know that moving data over from one DB to another can be a bit difficult, and that updating one DB from another can take some considerable time, but I'm one man, not fully knowing what he's doing, learning on the fly with trial and error, after being caught out with a problem just appearing.

GW can and should have a team working on this, who know what they're doing, with an idea of what the end goal is supposed to look like due to at least some level of foresight about a new webstore going live.

Anyone else manage to have missing GW order history restored yet? I assume that orders placed after the go-live of the new site have appeared properly, but I don't want/need to try that out by placing another order for GW stuff.

Honestly, I'm looking at buying some Crooked Dice Lawmen for a project, which feels like a better purchase.

Crooked Dice miniatures and terrain are very nice. I have a whole list of their stuff I'd want to try and game Stranger Things, especially the first season. I have a few of their single miniatures and they are one of many companies I wish were stocked locally as I'd incrementally pick up lots of their stuff like the lawmen if I didn't have to plan and execute mail orders.

My most recent visit to the new GW site caused me to wonder if the designer/vender was being paid by the amount of white space on the site. Everything really spaced out, lots of scrolling, still hard to navigate, a horrible browsing experience. I haven't even made it to trying to log into my account or buy something. Last purchase was the Rogue Trader reprint. Do I need to confirm that order still exists on the site?

It would be interesting to see whether the disastrous new GW website hurt their internet traffic numbers. Between that and the general shabby way they treat their customers, I'm happy to check out other, more interesting aspects of the hobby. I recently picked up a copy of Saga and the massive Victrix pack of Vikings... After much battle report watching, the game looks like a ton of fun; plus the miniatures can easily do double-duty in Mordheim. And I've had an itch to make some medieval terrain... now to find the time!

The new site is *so good* that they needed to release a FAQ about it, which I also had to spend some time re-finding via the Community site:

Under "Where Is My Order History?":
All regular orders placed and dispatched before the 20th of October 2023 are already available in your order history.

Orders that contain a Made to Order product that haven’t been dispatched, will be dispatched as normal. These orders will not show in your Order History until they have been delivered.

Pre-Orders placed between the 21st and 28th of October will be dispatched as normal. These orders will not show in your order History until they have been delivered.

Regular orders placed on Games-Workshop.com and ForgeWorld.co.uk after the 20th of October 2023 will be added to your Order History in the coming days.

If you have any questions regarding your order history, please contact our Customer Service team.
From the looks of it, GW's acknowledgement to you that your MTO order was ever placed, let alone any progress/status of the order, will only appear on your account on their website once they've sent it to you.

I'll say it again in bold, because it sounds unbelievably dumb, and it is; GW's acknowledgement to you that your MTO order was ever placed, let alone any progress/status of the order, will only appear on your account on their website once they've sent it to you.

We have to rely on our order confirmation emails and pray that we'll still get it until then.

This should not be how a webstore works, and feels very much like they want to be able to potentially contest people ever placing a MTO order at all when their 180 day MTO turnaround comes and goes, by which time you can't get an easy refund via PayPal/Credit Card, but GW think this is perfectly reasonable.

I would hassle GW (again) by emailing their customer service team directly to get confirmation that they've got it recorded, but I got a cookie-cutter response of the FAQ at the time (checked via the Wayback Machine), back when I first enquired (note the lack of mention about MTO orders and pre-orders):
All orders placed before the 20th of October 2023 are already available in your order history. If these are not visible in your Order History, please contact our Customer Service team.
Orders placed on Games-Workshop.com and ForgeWorld.co.uk after the 20th of October 2023 will be added to your Order History in the coming days
I suppose if you wanted to try to cancel your order, the lack of it existing on their webstore only reinforces the difficulty of cancelling said order.

I emailed them about my order placed on 10/16/23 just to make the point that the order should be there. I offered no opinions about the site or the service to avoid an increased change my order would deemed "lost or unreceived" in the future. I assume people have lost their jobs over this rollout but there just as likely to be promoted given recent performance and decision making.

I'd think those people will have failed upwards.

Also missing the RT hardback and got the same response as you did. Oddly orders from many years ago have appeared but with no details.

Omg, gonna be balder soon. So it turns out the “new” computer was fine, but I screwed the VGA monitor into the VGA port. Turns out it needs to go into the graphics accelerator card. So one vga-to-hdmi adapter later, and I have a working computer. Time to sync with One Drive and restore my stuff. Except One Drive only backed up the short cuts, not the actual files…. Since the old computer is now a brick, my son and I ripped out the old hard drive and now I’m waiting on a SATA adapter…

You are not having much luck lately!

AND THEN a repairman was supposed to come out to check on the dishwasher because it’s under warranty, but I missed their call because i didn’t restart my phone after an update. They finally came out, said “yup, doesn’t work. I’ll order the part and call you when it gets in” and left. Then the new water heater stopped working, and it took a $220 electrician visit to get it running. Turns out it was good it wasn’t working, because the plumber used the wrong electrical ties (nuts?) and it could’ve electrified the water. Or fried the machine. Because the pipes have a slow drip/seepage that goes right into the heaters electrical box. Still waiting for the plumber to come back and look at that…
