What's on your mind?

I think you need to find out more about what attracts him.

If he wants to play AoS, but doesn't want to pay GW prices, then he could try proxying cheaper alternatives (Mantic, Oathmark, etc).

If he likes the GW models, then he could play some other game (Dragon Rampant perhaps) with GW models - but not need so many of them.

He said he is into Age of Sigmar. Sadly I haven’t a clue where to start with that. It is unfortunately after i lost interest in the official GW lore.

I’ve asked him if he wants an introduction into wargaming. My initial theory is to introduce frost grave and star grave. Other than that all I have to go off is he likes Lord of the rings and the Witcher.

Any suggestions in case he accepts my offer?
warcry, warhammer quest, warhammer underworlds are all set in the AOS setting
-warhammer quest is 1 (expensive) box without supplements
-warcry and warhammer underworlds both offer multiple warbands (and some warbands are wanted out there for converting potential)

maybe those might have a few overlaps between either of your preferences?

I would suggest introducing him to Oldhammer. Low model count means you don´t have to sell your kidneys in order to afford models. You can also buy minis from other companies which will fit nicely for any chosen force. Show him either battle reports on Youtube or even my battle reports in pics here on Yaktribe to see that a low amount of models is enough to have a wargame.

It's hard to beat Frostgrave as a starter game: very straightforward rules, uncomplicated dice mechanics, and small model count... It is a rare case where you can have "fast, cheap, and good."

Mordheim is another option. The rules are free online, pretty cheap to get going with whatever fantasy minis you want and paper-craft terrain. The rules are more convoluted than Frostgrave, but it's a D6 option if he doesn't like D20 systems.

If there's others active Blood Bowl also just needs a single box for a lot of teams. Most people into BB probably already have the pitch, dice, rules, rulers, throw-in templates etc that you need to play and the structure of the game means you never really need more than one set.

Though it's borderline if it could be called a wargame I suppose.

Do you get the Hachette magazines where you are?

The current 40k collection is coming towards an end (in the UK) and I saw a Facebook post today suggesting a new AoS one was coming soon. It can be a cheap(er) way to get certain models.

I found myself getting a bit resentful about buying GW miniatures towards the last few years.

I know I’ve been salty on ForgeWorld prices for a long time but even Citadel plastics have become ludicrous, especially as their rulesets have seemingly wanted customers to buy more and more.

However… since I fully let go and embraced Historical miniatures back in 2024 (rather than looking for cheap conversion parts for Necromunda) I’ve a new-found enthusiasm for my projects that I’ve not had in… probably fifteen years!!

I’ve actually been enjoying getting the models, building and painting them and most importantly - reading up about them! I’ve not bothered with GW faction fluff since the 90s!!

I now have four new game systems I’m looking forward to messing about with and the best bit is that the miniatures are usable in a variety of games set in that time period!

not wanting to fuel the 'well of resentment' I notice some of the young'uns download Gw product scans (telegram) and print them themselves.

(I buy most my kits/bitz.... but at times if I miss/screwed up a rarer leg bit I'm likely to look for alternate solutions)

I have to agree. Since getting into historicals it has really become apparent just how much GW rips you off. Even what should in theory be cheaper projects like doing 2nd edition armies is still really expensive. Even trying to update my old Warhammer armies just seems overpriced and not value for money.

Some cartoon for children scare me more than horror movie. I think it has something to do with the saturation of sound and color. i wonder if has a name? A very random thought.

Nsn, it's not that but it's my fault. I should I used disturbing instead of scared. But thank you. The article you provide helped me make the distinction.

I did a quick comparison and even at full RRP Warlord wins. Not only on price but also content. Plus the miniatures are actually very nicely detailed and have massive amounts of customisation options!!

Never watched the punisher. I like super hero or super vilain but vigilante type was never my thing. Spider man yes punisher no.

This is good if everyone like the same kind of super hero it will be boring.

If you think about it each language has his own logic. For exemple : in English a bullet train is a train that goes fast. But in french it will be a bullet that has been trained.

Fascinating isn't it? I need sleep.
