A WHQ forum deserves posts!

I had been logging my effort to paint a full set of WHQ dungeon tiles, along with all the monster lists fully painted, on a WHQ site but I got sidetracked when I started an actual campaign at my gaming club. All the progress I logged is here;

http://bwarhammerquest.runboard.com/t90689,offset=0

I've been DMing for a group of five heroes, a barbarian, a wizard, an ogre, a knight, and an elf. So far the campaign has run thusly;

The heroes met and killed an Orc Shaman, and knicked all his treasure.

Returning to the city, they were tasked by Alderman Fritzl to investigate strange rumblings in the sewers. It turned out to be a skaven warlock building a warpfire generator, which was promptly destroyed.

The Alderman then asked the heroes to track a courier who had disappeared with his money. They tracked him to a well, descended it, battling the Mega Spider and finding the courier cocooned within its lair.

Now, Fritzl has asked the heroes to burgle the house of his main political rival, Balthus Dire, and retrieve a book that details the whereabouts of a Fritzl family heirloom. The heroes can keep what ever else they find.

We are descending into this dungeon soon and will log some details and photos.

Warhammer Quest was one of the few GW games i never got ahold of. (Dark Future was another).
It's great, essentially like a big sandbox of the Old World. Works best with a DM though, the randomly generated card / table based game is barely scratching the surface of the fun!

I was pretty obsessed with getting it all together after I was given a near complete box that a friend had been storing for me for a decade or two. Fortunately I found a group of guys with equally fond memories and we've started this campaign.

The adventurers snuck up on the mansion in the dead of night, and broke in through a side door. Although the mansion was resplendent from the outside, inside the building was empty, decrepit, and thick with dust. A trail of footprints in the dust lead the group to the basement, and a book case.

mmq1l5.jpg

The specific book they are looking for is not on the shelf, but maybe one of the books holds the key to finding it.

The elf picked up the book 'Duck' and promptly ducked, just in case. After nothing untoward happened, he opened the book and was promptly bit by a duck that came looming up from the pages, taking a wound.

The knight then opened the 'Despair' book which caused a doorway to open in one of the walls, and the sound of chanting echoed through the hidden passages.

Staring through the halls the gang were attacked by hired goons, guard dogs, and cultists of some bizarre ritual.

Battling through the dungeon they encountered Balthus Dire conducted some foul sorcery, surrounded by his guard dogs and more cultists. The heroes quickly hacked their way through the goons and the elf felled the Sorceror with an arrow. As he fell, the Sorceror laughed and told the heroes they had barely scratched the surface of his citadel of chaos. The whole dungeon was changed, and the Sorceror disappeared. The knight also lost his pet dog, much to his distress.

Now in the midsts of the citadel of chaos, the adventurers set off to find and kill the Sorceror and find his book. The mind bending properties of the labyrinth led to any power phase rolls of one meaning one random adventurer being given a secret insanity scroll. By the end of the dungeon the party were pretty crazy! The knight refused to go along with any of the party's plans, outright performing the opposite of what he was asked by the end. The elf became paranoid about the wizard and would tackle him at random points, the wizard began stealing the other warriors treasure, and the Ogre not only became vegan and wouldn't hurt any creatures but also periodically collapsed in a gibbering mess, convinced he was merely a pawn in a game of dice played by fickle gods.

The party fought its way on through the citadel, the nature of the beasties now tzeentchian with flamers and tzaangors haunting the halls. They soon came to a room that contained a large antique mirror, which the Ogre decided to pick up and take with him. It paid off as they soon encountered another mirror on a wall. Positioning the other mirror directly opposite, the wall mirror became a doorway... but evil mirror images of the heroes stepped out and attacked the party. Fighting back, the heroes quickly realised that their weapons could not harm the evil reflections, and after briefly toying with the idea of wounding themselves, the Ogre quickly took charge of the situation by hurling the knight into the mirror, destroying it along with the reflections, allowing the heroes to press on to another room.

This room contained the altered form of the evil Sorceror, with his pet cockatrice. The warriors battled the beast (much to the ire of the vegan ogre) and eventually managed to subdue it and the Sorceror. But once again the magician laughed and teleported away, the structure of the maze changing around the heroes once more.

The heroes battled on through the halls, slaying more magical monsters. They eventually found a room with numbered floor tiles floating over broiling vortex of magic. The knight stepped onto the first tile which promptly disappeared under his feet, and he was only just able to fall back onto hard standing before plummeting into the vortex. At this point the party said regroup so they could try and crack the sequence, so the knight immediately ignored them and began walking forward randomly. Time and time again he stepped on the wrong tile and nearly fell to his doom, losing an item of treasure each occasion. The wizard had also succumbed to the pheromones of the knight and was following directly in his trail, meaning no one else could get past. Eventually the group worked out how to handle the knight, and worked out the correct tiles were all prime numbers, and got across.

The final room contained the Sorceror in his most powerful, avian form, and his dragon ogre henchmen. After a battle they finally managed to slay the Sorceror and claim the book.

The walls of the citadel of chaos crumbled around the warriors and they found themselves back in the main hall of the abandoned mansion. Reporting back to Alderman Fritzl, he took the book from the heroes and told them he needs time to study the book but wants to keep the heroes on retainer for an important mission. As payment for the book, he agreed to finance the training of all the group to their next battle level.

When the training was finished, the warriors return to Fritzl. He tells them that the book details the locations of the pieces of a lost family heirloom, the Golden Axe. Having the axe returned to him will give him an important boost in his bid to become mayor of the city. If the heroes retrieve the items and return them to him he will make them all rich and give them holdings within the local lands.

The Alderman has commissioned a ship, the Barnacled Salami, to take the group where they need to go. The first stop is Norsica, then onto Lustria, sail back to Tilea, and then finally travel on foot to Sylvannia.

The heroes agree to his terms and stock up on supplies for their long mission.

The party touched down on the shores of Norsca, and began their trek to the last know location of the fragment of the golden axe. The elf had suffered in the cold so stayed on the boat.

Entering the cavern the group encountered some rampaging Norsemen straight away, and the fighting began, and wouldn't stop until the very last room. The group soon hacked through the Norse warriors, and proceeded through the cavern. They turned into a room and encountered a Beastmen champion, beastmen shaman, and their manky hordes of beastmen followers. Whilst dealing with them, the group were attacked from behind by some frenzied Wolfmen.

6yiqtc.jpg

The wolfmen put some severe damage onto the ogre but the wizard kept him going with some effective healing spells. While the battle raged some direwolves also ambushed the party, killing the Knight's dog, Sebastian! Overcome with grief, the knight insisted that the party use their once per dungeon resurrection gem to bring him back to life as soon as they'd dealt with all the monsters.

The group battled on, quickly dispatching a group of ogres (our own ogre much regretting hacking down his own kind!). In the next room they were ambushed by some yhetis carrying dangerous ice blades. During the fight some more direwolves attacked the group, so the wizard flamed them with a vast fireball. Whilst certainly effective on the direwolves, poor Sebastian was also caught up in the conflagration and was once again killed, incinerated beyond recovery. Our noble knight wept like a babe when he saw the dogs frazzled carcass.

24y65ms.jpg

The yhetis gave one hell of a battle but eventually the party won out, healed up and pressed on.

The next room was a great hall full of drunken, feasting norsemen and their champions. The fight began and was one hell of a scrap, one of the Norse champions even blasting the knight with a hammer blow that knocked him out.

2am5nq.jpg

Fortunately the wizard healed him and the heroes rallied, killing the champions and sending the norsemen to Valhalla quickly behind them.

The last room had a great frozen underground river through the middle of it, and a chest with the Golden Axe fragment glittering in it on the other side. An ogre hunter warlord and his retinue of ogres and frost sabres stood between the heroes and their prize. Bellowing in a rage, the hunter struck the ice with his club and the ice begun to crack under the warriors feet, plunging the knight and wizard into the water, who fortunately managed to climb out a little shaken up. The ogre hunter roared, it would be a tough fight....

j9sju8.jpg

...well actually it wouldn't as the barbarian had saved all his one shot skills and treasure items to unleash an attack the likes of which would not be seen again until the Emperor erased Horus' very soul from existence. The hunter was killed outright, leaving a quick mop up job of his minions, allowing our heroes to seize the first piece of Fritzl's axe.

2cgjw3r.jpg

Returning to the boat, the group set sail for their next adventure in the lands of Lustria. The voyage was fairly quite, the wizard getting sun stoke during a becalmed period, and a group of Imperial Dignitaries being rescued from a life raft to hitch a ride back to the Empire with the warriors once they were to return to the Old World.

Arriving in the Lustrian port, the warriors began asking around for info on the Golden Axe. They were summoned to the halls of the king, who informed them that his daughter the Princess had the shard of axe as a piece of jewellery around her neck. She had been kidnapped by lizardmen as a sacrifice, and if the heroes could return her too him they could keep the fragment and get a handy reward to boot. The heroes agreed and prepared for their trek through the steaming jungles.

The flyer that started it all. Our wizard found it in the inn privvy.

At first, I thought you meant this flyer was how you found some other players, before realising it was only an in-game prop. Too bad.

I wish I had the time and patience to make board tiles like yours, let alone the other props. Or that I lived near Basildon.

Luckily I do get the time to craft up stuff as I work shifts, and what the hell else am I gonna do on a tuesday afternoon ha ha. All my tiles are done but I also set a precedent of making an entrance tile for each adventure so that's simultaneously a joy and a pain.

The heroes set forth into the jungle in their bid to rescue the Lustrian princess and retrieve the next piece of the Golden Axe. We had a fully attended party this time with a new Elf Ranger, so six heroes (and a frazzled zombie dog).

They dodge snake pits and swarms of fire ants on their trek through the jungle, and the wizard picks up a pet monkey on the way, before arriving at the temple where the lizardmen are preparing to make their sacrifice. Entering the temple, they are immediately set upon by some temple guard and some Kroxigors. The battle is joined, with the tough temple guard striking some telling blows as the warriors concentrate their attacks on the menacing Kroxigors. The ruckus attracts some giant scorpions who manage to sting to death the new to the party elf ranger a total of three times. Some effective healing from the wizard sees him rejoin the living warriors and they eventually vanquish the beasts an press on.

Sebastian the zombie dog is obviously still holding a grudge against the wizard and randomly attacks him through the dungeon. It is only some sweet talking from the Knight that prevents the hound from being Fire balled again.

Battling through the rooms the heroes slay many lizardmen, continuing their proud tradition of slaughtering any spell caster before they can get a single spell off, before a pit of despair is opened up in front of one of the doorways. The warriors attempt to leap across but the wizard plunges into the hole and suffers some telling wounds. Eventually with some fine rope work from the Elf everyone gets across and the party presses onwards, encountering a Razordon in the next room. It shoots spines out willy nilly, putting down the Elf Ranger once again and meaning the party’s other Elf had to force some provisions down his throat to keep him going.

Killing the razordon the heroes press further into the dungeon where they find the sacrificial chamber. The princess is bound and gagged, perched perilously on the edge of a pit while a skink shaman performs a bizarre ritual behind her. The room is filled with temple guard, skinks, and an angry looking Saurus Champion.

10r4tac.jpg

Battle is joined, and it isn’t long before the Elf Ranger is on the floor again, a boisterous Temple Guard having stoved his head in with a stone club. The wizard heals him, and is shortly afterwards banished for a turn by the Skink Shaman who has miraculously survived to cast a spell after some crafty magic resist rolling. The Elf Ranger decides to perform a tactical retreat and use his bow for the rest of the encounter while the noble Knight strides into the fray to rescue the damsel.

The heroes eventually win out, and set the princes free. As soon as her gag is removed she immediately lambasts the party for their appalling behaviour, accusing them of not checking their Old World privilege and of being blood thirsty imperialists, coming to the New World to butcher the local minorities and steal all their treasure. She is adamant that the lizardmen were merely trying to include her in their noble local traditions and seems oblivious that she was about to be shoved into a pit of fire. The barbarian suggests pushing her into the fire pit anyway and to hell with the reward, but the Knight is too noble to permit it. As the princess is mid rant about being slut shamed for her nudity (the wizard’s monkey had nicked her loin cloth, long story) the Ogre scoops her up and the party heads back out through the dungeon.

It isn’t long before the Princesses whining attracts some unfavourable attention and some Saurus Knights on cold ones charge the heroes. Unfortunately the heroes are arranged in a less than an ideal order and the Saurus Knight Chief with an unholy magic weapon charges straight into the Elf Ranger and kills him again with one blow. The wizard once again keeps him alive and after the Ogre barges his way past the knights the Barbarian and Knight can enter the fray and the party manage to subdue the Sauruses. At this point the party see the danger of letting the Princess continue to gob off and the Barbarian decides to share his noble culture with her by punching her unconscious, allowing the group to leave the dungeon unmolested.

At this point, the party decide to use the Elf’s random risky teleportation spell to transport themselves back to the King’s palace straight away. The lone protest came from the Ogre, who of course was then whisked away to the realm of chaos for eternity when the spell went wrong. Everyone else (including the knocked out princess, thong wearing monkey, and Zombie dog) made it safe, retrieved the reward and Golden Axe fragment from the king, and headed to the local tavern for a celebratory drink, which included both the Knight and the Elf Ranger getting terrible ‘Mitie Worrier’ tattoos.

Mid drink, the King’s Guard entered the tavern looking for the warriors. It seems the princess has woke up and the king was none to pleased that his special snow flake was man handled by a chauvinistic barbarian! The group scarper, heading to their waiting boat where they set off back to the Old World.

The sea voyage was fairly tumultuous, with a kraken attack and the barbarian falling overboard whilst dolphin watching, but three months into the trip the ship is rammed by some Dark Elf corsairs. The boat is sunk, and the heroes are captured by dark elf slavers, taken to the bowels of a giant Black Ark, stripped of their kit, and chucked in a dungeon awaiting torture. They will have to escape from the cell pretty quickly, find their ship captain, and commandeer a boat if they are ever going to continue their quest for the Golden Axe.

Love the write up Luke!

I'm fortunate enough to be one of Luke's players and it's absolutely awesome to be playing in this campaign.... especially since Luke does such a great job of painting all the enemies, tiles, entrances and boss rooms. It's most Wargamer's childhood dream to be playing games with fully painted miniatures and terrain and Luke is kind enough to invest his own time so we can enjoy it!

My poor Ogre Adventurer did, unfortunately, get sucked into the Realm of Chaos at the end of the last mission. A shame, as he's just made it to level 5 and finally started to give some monsters a good kicking! On the bright side, it did save the rest of the group walking to the settlement so I'm sure the Ogre would have been happy with his noble sacrifice.... *facepalm*.
I'll be bringing my Kislevite Shaman (or more accurately, Priest of Ursun) out of retirement for the next few sessions (until one of the other players inadvertently murders me again).
