Yakday Peterborough 2017

Really excellent input sump dweller and ptrix! (You're making it really hard for me to hate the crazies right now! :p)
Cheers Spafe for setting this up, it is truly democracy at its finest!
And im almost certain I speak for all when I say I can think of none better than you clockwork to arrange the venue! You are one of the foundation stones that makes this site absolutely the best place to be right now, I for one, trust you completely and wholeheartedly!
Obviously we will have to wait awhile for people to have a chance to have their say in location, but how long does everyone think we should leave it? My thinking being, if we leave it longer it gives people more chance to vote, but, it also gives us less time to book!? Also we may get a better deal if we can book something sooner rather than later!?

And did anyone have any more thoughts on when it should be?

While we wait, I would love to hear everyone's ideas on how the weekend should go?
Obviously this is all dependant on afew variable factors but is worth thinking about I feel.
But a very rough format that I thought about (stolen in part from Beardlegend):
Friday night - set up and social. Have afew drinks, get to know one another and show off our amazing gangs. (And possibly issue challenges ;))
Saturday - non stop necromunda, from dawn til dusk, broken up with mealtimes (an area that needs serious consideration) this will be in an open play format, so people play as many or as little games as they wish. But the gang ratings accumulated during this day will effect the next. (Possibly party like there's only 24 hours to save the underhive?)
Sunday - gang fight knockout tournament with people ranked in accordance with how well they did the day before. Mebees have multiplayer games, just to add a little double dealings to the mix! Also have non game competitions like best painted gang or most sportsman like. But all ending with a grand final and awards ceremony, quite possibly a declaration of next years venue? (I got that one from the Olympics :p)

Let me know what you think, and keep the suggestions rolling! I want to hear from newer members too so don't be shy! :D

Yaktribe FTW!

What the hell is wrong with the percentages on the poll?

My only thought on when it should be would be 'when it is cheapest to book facilities.' And presumably travel and accommodation are cheaper during the off season, so that is a factor (I don't know what constitutes the off season though.)

@CaptainDangerous - your planned itinerary sounds good to me, but with less focus on drinking and partying, and more on NECROMUNDA!

I think this is an excellent initiative and I'm looking forward to seeing it develop. I can't promise to attend but would certainly give it some careful thought.

Some ideas and thoughts
  • Personally I don't think Necromunda is a very good tournament game and a two day tourney doesn't hold much appeal to me - I find the game, the experience system and the whole ethos far too random for that! I suspect there are more people who would feel the same. So you should think about alternatives for those types.
  • One alternative would be "challenge games" - set scenarios with predefined terrain, slightly developed gangs and possibly set deployment, that are either designed (through playtesting) to create a specific challenge or be well balanced.
  • Another is "participation games" which are more story/roleplay oriented. These could be a blend of gamesmastered session and traditional Necromunda, almost like Inquisitor was meant to be. Which brings me to...
  • Don't neglect Inquisitor, Inq28 and GoMo. The former would be particularly cool as participation games with up to 4 players participating in a session against a GM
  • Modelling and painting clinics. E.g Terrain with Clockwork. Or Kitbashing a Goliath Gang.
  • Try and rope in some retailers as sponsors - War Games Tournaments, for example.
BTW I find the location options a bit odd, I'd have thought having them correspond with the usually accepted "regions" would make more sense e.g. South west, south east and so on. If I want to vote to have it in Devon (I don't, but stay with me here!) is that west or south?!

Oh damn. The societal guilt. I knew this day would come to haunt me eventually.

If the vote is for The South and people are happy for me to, I'll look into how feasible my old plans stand today. Outside of London, I can't really help to the same degree though I would certainly attend and be happy to lend what support I could.

Glad to see a significant number of people are into this again.

Scratch my old plans.

There are two things that i think we need going forwards, before anything else happens:

1.- A planning committee. 3/5 people with designated areas of responsibility. They'd be in charge of keeping the best interests of the community at heart and keeping each other in check. Preferably long standing and vouchable community members - people we know and trust. Reasonable people. I'd understand if I wasn't nominated on those grounds.

2.- Simply an idea of the numbers we'd get/can support. I'd suggest that once the committee is formed, they set up a kickstarter for a thread on here where they can update the community.

I recommend that anyone the community nominates has either Logistics, Event Management, IT or Catering as a background. Preferably a cross-over of these skill-sets.

Good luck community! Go talk to your Necro buddies and get them fired up for this.

:) Love your ideas fold! I'll address your points once more people have had their say but as for the location options, (and just incase anyone else isn't sure), are there so that members who are seriously thinking of attending can state whereabouts they live or where would be easiest for them to get to or even just where they think might be the most appropriate!
This is to get an idea of A) a very rough headcount and B) what density the attending members are.
For example (and I'm exaggerating for illustrative purposes) if there are 80 people from the north and only 20 from the south, then it would be more economical for those in the south to come North and vice versa. Whereas if there were a 50/50 split in both North and South then it would benefit everyone if the location was in the Midlands as this would be the easiest/beneficial for both groups.
But as it is, there are many differnt variations on how this might pan out, so if we just see where it would be best for most, then we can get a better idea on where to pinpoint the exact venue. .....and what time of the year ....and best ways of getting people and supplies there ....etc.etc....

Thanks again for the great feedback tho! And if any other member has more Ideas or just what they would like to see or how they think the weekend should go, I am really keen to hear all thoughts and suggestions! :)

The Munda population density idea was floated at some stage. The map says London has the largest density (or did when I last checked) ...

... that doesn't necessarily mean that London has the most active members but I rather suspect this to be the case.

Whatever we do, I think that hostel/hotel accomodation for overseas or distance members who want to attend should be worked into overall ticket pricing, with an understanding that this is budget accomodation and other overheads be kept to a minimum to compensate. -

Food/drink/venue hire/staffing ... etc ...

:D You'll have to excuse my super slow response times beardlegend, I'm just not the best typer is all! :p
You are already going 100 mph and I havnt even had the chance to say how happy I am to hear from you! Your energy is class! I love it!
But I'm almost certain fold was on about the poll on this thread, and in the case of this event I feel the player map has no relevance at this point because I think (or at least feel) that the most interest is going to be from us country bumpkins who are scared of our wives, and need the ultimate excuse to go out and play with our friends :p in my imagination the conversation will go like this...
'But honey, it's only once a year and all my friends from the Internet will be there, you wouldn't want me to look like the odd one out, would you!?' :D:p
Not like you lucky buggers with fancy gaming clubs and the like! :D
But I mean, only time will tell, at least if we can get a good group of 100% definates, then we can expand on plans and ideas!
Anyway, I'm so glad to be hearing from you! You really owned the yak-con concept! And I think, just from your zest and positive can do attitude, you will totally be key in the progression of future yaktribe events! I'm really honoured to have you hear from the start!
I was wanting to ask you what pitfalls or potential hazards we might come across? Was there anything that was particularly hard or difficult last time and was there anything you might have done differently?

There are a lot but the two most defeating aspects, generally speaking, are inaction and indecision.

Indecision - You need a clear idea of what you want to do. This sounds easy but can become convoluted once you attempt to take the needs of a large community to heart.

Inactivity - When you spend time debating, actual advances don't get made and people lose interest.

To avoid this you need a small, responsible team who can debate and decide in a timely fashion, face to face and on the phone, who then act on their decisions.

It can be hard to just set a date otherwise ...

Dudes, this is awesome.

Make it like glasto, but necro instead of music. Non stop necro with regular intake of alcohol and sausage products. Stop to sleep and shit only.

BeardLegend is great at ideas like this. Form a small committee and sort it. Dont go full democracy on every detail, great ideas die that way. I should know, democracy is my business...

Sort the date and the event details, as a committee. If you build it they will come. We're all adults and can afford a dirty necro wknd pretty much anywhere.

Who volunteers for the planning committee?

I would definitely volunteer.

I found that as long as you try to make the best decisions available to you and have committed people to bounce ideas off of, the community will generally accept what decisions are made, otherwise people tend to just argue for what's best for them.

Ultimately we all want a Yakday. People will get over the fact that it'll be held in the wrong part of the country/wrong date/wrong format.

"Whatever we do wrong, we can do better next year." Should be the attitude.

I would also actually avoid getting sponsorship and the complications that come with it. At least at first. You want unquestionable community ownership I think.

... and thank you Alobar for the glowing praise. I don't know that it's deserved or we'd be on our third annual by now.

I'm up for meeting up for a game or two and a piss up. If I can help organise things I'll try but can't say I'm best suited to that what with working unsociable hours and having my kids most weekends when I'm off, but whatever I can do to help I'll try me best.

Also, 'Lord of the Spire', anyone?

:D This is pure gold!!
Is something like this good?....

To all yakkers....
I propose that beardlegend, clockworkorange, spafe, ptrix, sump dweller and myself (CaptainDangerous), form the first yakday committee. .......and cardyfreak!
If any member disagrees with these choices or think that they would benefit the team, let it be known.
First decree:
1)All meetings should be done on this thread, for all to read, it is a community event for and by the members of yaktribe and transparency and inclusion of all members should be encouraged but with the understanding that the commitee has the final say.
2) The location pole should be open for two/three weeks or at the committees discretion. At the end of which, the commitee will decide where best to locate a venue.
3) Based on the result of the poll the commitee will find a suitable venue and will work on pricing and ticket availabity, once this has been decided, then tickets will be open to buy for all members of the tribe.

click like if you agree with these terms otherwise state your disagreement.

I'd suggest planning the bulk of this using the PM feature so as to keep stiff as a surprise really. Sure, have general chat about how things are progressing but the meat of the committees decisions should be done by the committee without having every detail questioned.
I only say this as when the Beards Herculean efforts were in full flow, there was a tonne of enthusiasm that never really progressed the idea much, it was more Beards force of will that got it as far as it did, so for me the point of the committee should be to inform people of what's happening rather than asking for input on every little thing.
For now simple 'yea' or 'nay's should suffice in order to put some provisional plans together. Then, when things seem more advanced and a consensus is reached on where the event will be held, somewhere can be booked up and we'll see if the numbers match initial interest.
Feel free to ignore all of this though ;)

I would steer away from GW locations as there would be issues around the use of non-GW miniatures (if people are considering Warhammer World).

If you want somewhere with beer, beds to sleep in and a conference room/hall that is centrally located (in the U.K.) then @JimboDeany might be able to help as he goes to a Blood Bowl event in a travel lodge (I think) near/in Nottingham. They used to play in Bugman's Bar (it will always be known as that to me) at GWHQ but they stopped going there (due to the non-GW mini issue).

That's all I have to add apart from I will attend if work permits it.
