Heroquest

Hmmm.... not an instant auto win like we were all hoping. $400k already in just a few hours. This will be funded by the end of the day for sure... I'm hoping this is their way of testing the market.

sitting on the fence on this one for sure.

So on a plus side at least
I live in the UK too and this absolutely stinks.

Anyone here smart enough to figure out a way that people in the UK can get in on this...?
Well I was thinking of ordering a set to my brother's as he lives Stateside, however no completion date which makes me think it'd miss his next UK visit which also may not happen Covid wise.

Also about as rich as a GW offering so might just not... Does it look like a straight re-release?

they said they would start production as soon as they hit their funding goal. After a few hours they are halfway there.
I'm going to wait until November on this one. I want to see where WHQ goes next and if they release Imperial Assault 2nd Edition.

As much as I want to get out of the GW eco system... not sure this is it yet.

I did a year out of GW's pocket playing infinity, I probably spent half as much but the fluff just never sunk in and ultimately winning or losing a game where you have zero immersion just isn't rewarding, zombicide black plague scratches my fantasy itch so im not devastated, massive darkness 2 was a bigger disappointment than this.

I thought about it for about 20 minutes, but barring some new minis (and I lost the dwarf decades ago) I have the whole damn thing already; not really worth it. Nice for those who want it though...

Reasons why this is a kick in the pants:
  • It's a re-release rehashing the last edition
  • They're not even pretending they've done any original work on it
  • They were so lame they had a new artist literally copy the original box art
  • All picture of the components looks exactly like the original edition
  • The new art really doesn't evoke the same feeling or emotion, it looks much more childish than the original
  • It's being crowdfunded
  • Only people in US & Canada will get an opportunity to get any of the exclusive features of the crowdfunding
  • Price point is clearly aimed at adults who have fond memories of the original, not a new generation of kids
I give this release 0 out of 5 stars

My prediction is that a lot of the people who have funded it are scalpers who haven't read the list of retailers in the tiny link at the bottom and assume this is going to be exclusively crowdfunded.

Can you point me at the list of retailers? I can’t see it on the web page.

It’s essentially just a rerelease of the original board game plus the first two expansions with new artwork, new miniatures and 3D sculpted version of the cardboard furniture and doors. I don’t really have an issue with that as if I wanted a new version of the game I would be playing Warhammer Quest or Blackstone Fortress.

Given the amount of furniture that is going from cardboard to plastic I’m not too fussed about it being that expensive as I have easily spent that much money on board games with miniatures.

For US$100 (AUD$140) you get
4 hero characters
21 evil creatures
21 doors (16 open and 5 shut)
12 pieces of furniture
3 treasure chests plus a handful of rats and skulls
Plus the game board, tokens and other junk.

By contrast Zombiecide Black Plague retails for AUD$160 and includes
6 Hero characters
65 evil creatures
Plus game board, tokens and other junk.

It’s definitely targeted at people like me who are nostalgic about the past and have some cash to burn, but I’m ok with that.

Right down the bottom there's a link that says "Where to buy" and that sends you to this page:

No indication as to how long it'll take to get to retail stores, but we should be able to get it from Amazon at least. Maybe it'll make it to Target or KMart in Aus and NZ too.

That’s not actually a list of what stores will stock this particular game though. It’s just a tool that you can use to look up already released games and it will cut down the list of stores listed to only those that stock that particular title.

For example if youtype in Risk it will reduce the list down to Amazon and Walmart.

I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get sold in at least one physical store or at least one online outlet but there aren’t any guarantees at this stage.

Going to wait until November. I would be surprised if it sold in stores at that price. Maybe by taking out the exclusives they will bring it down to 70 usd.

If finances allow would be open to helping out and shipping copies overseas....cant say that it would be cheap from where I live though.

That's no guarantee it'll make it to those stores. It looks like a generic page. Not familiar with Hasbro pulse many get put into mainstream retail production.

Plus US$140 for shipping to Canada, apparently. Will, sadly, be sticking to the copy we own. But it does bring up the interesting question of WHY is HASBRO effectively "kickstartering" a game for which all their development costs are already done, and for which they already own all the needed tools for production? This isn't a small indie company for which this funding is make-or-break, and they don't appear to be offering their backers a "wholesale" price reduction of any sort. Are they really just offloading any risk costs to customers, and claiming only the profit benefits? Adam Smith would be rolling in his grave, he saw that.

The actual development costs aren’t already covered though. The only bit that is the same is the wording in the rules.

They have redone all the artwork (box, character, cards, rulebook, etc). Redone the model sculpts. Sculpted the furniture.

It might all be similar to the original but it’s not the original stuff.

All that said though it’s still pretty shit that someone like Hasbro is kickstarting any board game.

Agreed. The only think that's unclear is whether they've done the tooling. If these are actually 3D printed resin models the big cost is plastic injection moulded tooling still to do.

But still doesn't warrant crowdfunding. I think price point has put me off plus (uncertain delivery esp given US only) - at a similar cost to Blackstone fortress I'd also rather see what the next Warhammer quest offering is.
