Some info: Escher gang, very little knowledge on playing the game, joining a campaign, looking to have fun and have a neat gang not just optimized but not looking to get rolled every single time. So I'm just looking for some advice, most of my knowledge on skills and weapons is based on some random google searches so feel free to point out obvious errors. But I'm not lookign for optimal, just looking for something neat and cool that will at least have fun playing for a campaign while I learn.

THE MORRIGAN - Deathmaiden
Combat Virtuoso

BRIGHID - Sister

You could potentially move that Needle Rifle onto your Matriarch and use her for shooting and then specialise the Queen more for close combat? Could drop the Knife (backup weapons like that are usually bought later rather than at creation when credits are quite tight) and get something else?

Also IMO double sword on the Death Maiden is slightly overkill at the start, most things early campaign will die if she attacks them even without the one extra attack, so you can save some cash there and afford something else perhaps?

I think you've struck a reasonable balance with this list, you've avoided the usual lasgun spam list that most people have to use to run optimal escher, but you've also got a reasonable spread of weapons that can threaten T4.

I agree with Monkfishs points, id love to see that Matriarch start with a better weapon than that lasgun. In starting rosters you should focus on getting everyone the main weapon you want them to use, then go for sidearms and grenades.

Matriarchs are better as ranged fighters as they're worse in melee than Death Maidens or your leader, so I'd reconsider Spring Up as her skill for something like Dodge, I would consider Spring up for the Death Maiden -combat virtuoso is a great skill but Spring Up gives her a much bigger threat range and will help her reach melee more reliably, Combat Virtuoso is a strong second choice though.

So I was going to do that, but the Lasgun appeared to have a longer range, so I assumed that it would be a better 'long range sniper' gun. Whereas the Needler seemed more a mid range, which I /thought/ worked better with the Queen having a sword as well?

So I've heard Spring Up is a no brainer, and everyone takes it. I don't really want to make an 'optimized' gang, I want something that feel fun and isn't the 'oh of course he has that build' situation.
Spring Up does sound better, and I've heard I should have taken a sword and claw instead of two swords... but in the end I went with what seemed cool. A whirling dervish reanimated warrior who lashes out with strikes when you thought she was too far away seemed much more 'neat factor' than just an optimized 'spring up'.
That being said, I appreciate the advise and will think about making the swap.

I'm so new to the game that I had assumed a Lasgun was a decent long range weapon. I know I'll eventually put a plasma gun on her, but wasn't sure what a good starting rifle would have been. Someone mentioned that Needle rifles don't do damage, just force an injury roll... which all seemed like greek to me case I don't know the ramification of that... but maybe I'll look at doing a swap.

You run 'optimal' escher because escher is a bad gang XD.

You have to put some optimization in because everything in the roster is overpriced except death maidens and lasguns.

Would it be worth it taking one of the shooting skills like Precision Shot or Trick Shot?

It's never gonna be an option for you

If your melee models lack spring up, they're just never getting into melee. I've tried to make virtuosso work soooo many times as a first pick. And it just ends up with a maiden eating dirt and not contributing compared to just a claw maiden with spring up.

That said, cutters have hopefully breathed new life into the virtuosso skill.

The thing about Eschers and Orlocks is that even relatively optimized gangs still aren't OP or considered "cheese" and they're still a lot of fun to play.

With Eschers, I tend to focus on relatively cheap shooting with my Queen, Matriarchs and Sisters at the start. Boltguns, Grenade Launchers, Shotguns and Lasguns are your friends! I leave the close combat to those who are best at it... the Death Maiden and an escort of Little Sisters, who can be respectable fighters for their cost. A Queen can also be good at CC, but it seems wiser to protect her by keeping her at range. When I give kit a Queen for CC, I usually just give her a Shock Whip and pistol on top of the Boltgun or (later in a campaign) Plasma Gun; that way she can remain protected from reaction attacks.

Spring Up is almost always your optimal skill choice, but you have access to others that are also pretty good, like Dodge. Combat Virtuoso is reallly cool and thematic, but you should be aware that any opponent with even a modicum of skill is going to dedicate a significant amount of effort towards keeping your Death Maiden pinned, since she's likely to send anyone close to her OOA. It can be very frustrating to have your elite close combat fighter spend turn after turn pinned by cheap Lasgun shots and never get a charge.
